ForNevermore Season One: Books 1-6 (The paranormal serial begins!)

From the writers of the groundbreaking post-apocalyptic serial Yesterday’s Gone, comes a dark new fantasy horror serial, ForNevermore.

All 17 year old Noella Snow ever wanted was a normal life.

But normal died with her mother, minutes after she was born. Then again when her father was murdered before her eyes on her seventh birthday. Now she spends her days in quiet misery, an outcast at school, harboring a secret crush on her best friend, Sam.

Noella’s only happiness lies in her dreams, in a world where her father still lives and Dante, a mysterious stranger with a deadly touch, guards over her.

Now those dreams have turned to nightmares as Noella begins hearing voices, witnessing murders she can’t possibly know of, and seeing the monsters from her sleep merging into her waking life.

Noella doesn’t want to return to King’s Point, the psychiatric hospital where she was forced to go after an “episode” two years earlier.

She tells herself she’s better.

But then one night Noella sees the impossible... Dante, watching her from afar, as he has for centuries – nearly as long as he's loved her.

Is Noella losing her mind? Or is she linked to a hidden world, destined to be normal ForNevermore?

ForNevermore is a bold new paranormal serial, with awesome cliffhanger endings that will make you feel like you’re watching your favorite TV show right on your Kindle.

ForNevermore Season One collects all six “episodes” in their entirety into one full-length book for the first time.

'ForNevermore' is a book about a teenage girl who has been diagnosed as having had a psychotic break that made her dreams seem to reach into her real life. It turns out that her dreams ARE reaching into her real life and not in a benign way.

It was an entertaining Young Adult novel, written like a TV series. Until I read 'ForNevermore' I hadn't realized how different my expectations of a genre TV series and a genre novel are. For me, a genre novel has to have a beginning, a middle and an end (although these days not necessarily in that order) and needs to take somewhere. A genre TV series just has to hook me with the pilot, entertain me with each episode, tease me with the next one and have the grace to end before it runs out of steam (unlike say, 'Supernatural' which reached my "I don't care anymore" limit long before it ended).

'ForNevermore' set out to be a genre TV series in print and it mostly succeeded.

Episode One was effectively The Pilot, where I make up my mind if the series is for me or not. It grabbed my attention, opening straight into intense action and then backing up to give a context that raised more questions than it answered. As soon as it had pulled me in, it went back to the action and its consequences, opening a lot of questions of the 'To Be Continued...' kind.  That was a pretty good start: clever, fast and not formulaic.

This is very much a Young Adult story but the gritty kind of Young Adult story that doesn't sugar-coat things. It's grounded in a realistic, if fraught family life, peppered with bizarre, lethally violent, inexplicable events that speak either to magic or mental illness. Even our heroine isn't sure which one is plaguing her.

The story is a mix of High School look-how-the-mean-girls-treat-the-weirdo and my-best-friend stole-the-boy-love-before-I-had-a-chance-to-tell-him, a dysfunctional homelife walking on eggshells so as not to provoke the always-ready-to-turn-rage-into-violencenarcissist Sheriff's Deputy live-in-boyfriend, a serial killer kidnapping and murdering local women and girls and our heroine occaisionally falling through portals into a Narnia that's been invaded by the Borg.

Personally, I could have done without so much of the High School drama but that's probably because I'm old.

I loved how the authors almost always managed to end each chapter on a high. It's the kind of thing that makes you binge-watch a series because you have to know what happens next. Just when I felt the story had veered too far towards high school melodrama, it twisted in midair like a cat and landed somewhere exciting. The last chapter of Part III FINALLY got me into the parallel world (although I still didn't know the hows or whys of that), pushed up the tension and ended with an unexpected comic moment that changed everything.

The ending wasn't a cliffhanger but it wasn't like the end of a standalone novel either. It has SEASON FINALE - THURSDAY AT 9-00 written all over it. The final scene caught me completely by surprise and made me wonder where Season 2 was headed. Which is exactly what it was designed to do.

At the age of 32, I don't think I qualify as young adult anymore, but I loved e story. Platt & Wright are story tellers who know how to surprise the reader again and again. And they did it again with this book. Why isn't season 2 here yet!?

It turns out sleep wasn't worth it. But this book was!

Okay i want to gush just for a moment because omg! i loved this!! i got this big goofy smile on my face right now because i was really cautious when i started this yesterday because i have never done like an episodic book before, and at some points i was a little like...do i want to keep going? Well do it! and just keep going and don't stop, because oh my god! SSSOOOO GOOD. LOVED IT. Seriously stop reading this review and go ahead and start reading. But i suppose if you want to hear what i have to say about the book i can tell you.

The song choice....uhh....give me a moment to think about it...."Dark Paradise" by Lana Del Rey. It just popped on my itunes and i thought how perfect?!

PLOT: Like I mentioned before this was the first episodic book that I have ever read, really that I have ever come across, very Charles Dickens of you guys (meaning the authors i believe there were two -if not this is awkward isn't it?) Well Goodreads is telling me there is so that is what i am going with. I would like to mention now that i think that the writing flowed really well and if this was someone wrote one part and someone wrote the other i couldn't tell, beautifully written. Okay so back to the plot. I LOVED IT. I am a huge paranormal/fantasy/sci-fi fan and you know what THIS BOOK GAVE ME ALL OF THAT. YEAH ALLL if you can't tell i am just a little excited. A reason that this book got a four vs five from me was because near about half way i thought there was too much going on and i was getting a little lost but at the end i was like FUCK it i don't care i love this!! sooo good but i remain strong at keeping it there so people can be warned there is a lot going on but honestly i think it is totally worth it. I love a book that has action and keeps me on my toes. And let me just tell you right now, this book kept me on my toes, on the edge of my seat, biting my nails and any other anxious movements you can think of. I was being jerked around like nobody's business i pride myself on thinking authors can rarely trick me, and even rarer to trick me more than once in a book, well gents you just kick my ass! At least three or four times. I was sitting with my jaw on the ground and my eyes opened to the point it hurt! So in the other words? Do i think it was original and awesome? Why yes, yes i do. Do i think you should read this for the plot? Yes, yes i do. But i think you should read it for more than that as well so now that we are here lets talk characters shall we?
*OH also before i forget, another reason this got dropped down to a four which i decided to change my mind its a 4.5, anyways was the random decision of POVs shifts and i am going to tolerate it for this because it was in episodes so i think it gets a little leeway hence why i now allow it to be a 4.5 stars from me!***

Characters!

Noella: So i will happily admit that i loved her, just a lot. Its hard to find characters it seems in paranormal books where they don't think that they are vulnerable and i get it people want a kickass narrator well your narrator can be kickass without having to be all unemotional. So Noella lost both her parents and from the summary it says that her father was murdered in front of her eyes but you never get to learn about that, they mention his death but i was - because i am sick - was wondering more about it. Anyways she comes from a bad past, she hasn't had it easy and life is difficult when you are considered cra-cra...not that i know anything about that.....But this isn't about me. So Noella even though she is outcasted and people are total asses to her she still wants to be a good person and thats what makes me love her, is that she doesn't become this angsty teenager. She seems very mature - which is understandable - for her age and i was happy as a clam to have her narrator most of the story for us.

Sam: Sam, sam, sam, sam, sam what am i going to do with you? I wanted to throttle him more than once. He is stupid. There i said it. Maybe i am being a bit bias but i think he is stupid. But whether he is stupid or not, and he is, he is loyal and caring. *i grudgingly admit* He is a good friend but i am surprised how long it took us to actually meet him... hmm whateves...is he a love interest you ask? WELL a little. Romance isn't the main focus of this book its a side note mostly which is fine because everything else will keep you so much more interest you will be like me and be like metaphorically pushing the guys aside and be like dude shut the hell up i am trying to figure this out!

So now that i am done ragging on Sam...damn him...what? *nervous giggle* i said nothing!

Dante: i love his name. And if i love his name i love him simple as that so there you go. Now love him. Fine you want more about him? Well he is a mystery and he seems to show up even later than Sam but that is okay. He is beyond loyal puts Sam's loyalty to shame and no that wasn't meant to be a dig at Sam it just the truth. I don't want to say much about Dante and give stuff away so i won't but i will say this: love interest as well. Don't worry no love triangles here - how you ask? well read the book and you will find out.

The other characters...villains i want to say something about one of the villains and this is a compliment, like legit. I LOVED IT. There are so many times i that i feel like YA or even Adult paranormal the authors are to scared to get a little blood on their hands, metaphorically obviously. Anyways these cats were going to for it and i loved it! (sorry i call everyone cats, or kiddie, or yeah...) But seriously YAY YAY YAY YAY YAY YAY!!!!! YAY just one more time...YAY!

So the ending, you guys (the authors) are cruel and evil and can i have the next one? NOW? please? yes? thank you! so yes that means cliffhanger kids....oh the twist in this book let me tell you still have my reeling.... totally awesome... SOOO GOOOD!!!

Okay now that i have managed to write this blog without gushing too much...yeah right i know. Anyways if you liked my thoughts on this book, or if you didn't you can check out other indie like books that i reviewed at my blog and tell your friends about these books because they are usually pretty amazing, like this book i think i will be bothering everyone about this one for awhile. okay stop the gushing and start the posting of the link so for all your paranormal, fantasy, sci-fi needs check this place out: http://theviolethourbookreviews.wordp... - we me and my friend will try to help you out the best that we can, and we appreciate you kids.

Oh last bit of advice, go read the book!!!!

ForNevermore is a wild ride that grips you and doesn't let go until the very last page. The books are billed as Young Adult but, I think that even finicky Adult readers will find a certain charm with this series.

The Good

Noella Snow- I felt the struggle with sanity Noella encounters in this book. Is Noella seeing things or is this all in her head? I really felt that the writers kept you guessing and even I had trouble telling if what she was seeing was real or not. Noella was a strong developed, well written character that I heavily enjoyed.

Sam- While Sam is relegated to the background as Noella's crush the majority of the book, I personally feel he will play a much bigger part in what is to come. I also loved his sweet nature, it was a nice break from the dark tone in the rest of the story.

Randy- I did not see Randy's storyline coming at all and was generally surprised when it took the turn that it did.

Action- If you like Action packed pages then this book is for you. Just when you think you will get a breather another scene comes along that leaves you gasping for air.

The Bad

Tori- Unfortunately this is one thing I saw coming a mile away and it really ruined the second half of the book for me once I figured it out.

Final Thoughts

I really loved this new serialized series by Sean Platt and David W. Wright. The Episodes were short but all together combined into a season made for a highly enjoyable action packed read. ForNevermore will have you leaving reality at the door and guessing until the very end. I will be giving ForNevermore by Sean Platt and David W. Wright ★★★★.

This was a great read, whether you're young or not. I'm definitely not, and I loved this first season.

I started reading this on sterlingandstone.net - the authors website - as serialized fiction, where we were served one chapter each day to start up on, and then it moved - as planned - to one chapter each week. I couldn't wait to read the rest, so moved to my Kindle instead. And what a wonderful story!

I have never read anything quite like this. A young adult horror fantasy story? I'm not sure which genre this fits under. It should have its own ;)

It's well written, and I just kept turning pages, because there never seemed to be a good place to put it down. No useless fillers, always something happening.

What I found extraordinary in particular, was the way Noella's life in our world feels like for her and me as a reader, and how the cross-over to the supernatural world really feels as a cross-over to the reader too. Even though you know it'll be there, you know it's coming (you've read the description, right?), it still feels like a very real shift between the worlds, and when they from time to time bleed into each other, it's done masterfully. At certain points, it feels like two stories, blending into one in the best way!

I can't wait to read the next season, which I'm sure will be just as awesome.
And it's on the way, according to the blog on the website. So if you haven't read this one already, grab it and read it!

An excellent start to a series I know I'm going to be addicted to. The characters are complex, and you're feelings about them change over the course of the series. Each episode leaves you on a cliffhanger begging for more. I suggest you buy the season as a whole so you can binge (similar to watching a season on Netflix).

I'm eager for the next season. This new type of writing is exciting, and I hope it catches on.

I read this with trepidation after reading the words "young adult" but liked Yesterday's Gone, so I gave it a try. I'm very glad I did. While Sean and David need a good line editor, the story is great. The pace kept me going and I want more.

This series started out a bit slow for me but picked up steam by the end; the last 2 episodes were very good. There were quite a few elements that were pretty predictable, but in true Collective Inkwell fashion they did have a good season finale that caught me by surprise.

This is a dark horror fantasy, written in Platt and Wright's inimitable style. Excellent, excellent, excellent! It was fast paced and scary, with several twists and turns. I am eagerly (and impatiently) waiting Season 2.
