Murder is serious business among vampires. If you kill, so do they. They are the Penitent – a military order among vampire society charged with one task only. Execute the condemned.
Vesper Hyde is a model Penitent. Solitary. Skilled. Deadly. Only once has she ever lost a target, even though it almost cost her life. Now the one that got away is back with a vengeance, and this time he's determined to finish the job. She needs to overcome the whispers of doubt and let her instinct and training take over to redeem her failure. But on this second time around, she doesn't expect a sidekick. A very sexy, stubborn, human sidekick.
Homicide Detective Decker Price has seen it all, including the murder of his wife at the hands of a twisted serial killer. When another murder pitches him headfirst into a world of vampires, witches, and sorcery, he is given a chance to mend shattered parts of his soul. But Vesper's world is as dark and alluring as the Penitent herself and he will come face to face with echoes of his past in order to help her keep a vicious enemy at bay.
If they are to succeed, they will need to push aside both their failings and work together to ensure the balance of their worlds remains unchanged. Redemption comes at a cost – is their love worth the price?
Tara Wood divides her time between creating domestic bliss and creating hot paranormal romance with the occasional side of kink. When not playing June Cleaver for her hubby and daughter, she can be found at the local Starbucks slamming back Frappuccinos and plotting out her next idea. Or she’s watching the BBC. Tara resides with her wonderful and tolerant family in the suburbs of Houston, Texas. She is currently at work on several projects, one of them being the next book in her In Blood series.
This was one exciting read! Redemption in Blood contained a very beautiful kick butt heroine, a hottie Mchotness of a man that is also a detective, add on a new concept to the world of the paranormal and we have a book that any paranormal reader can fully enjoy :)
Vesper is one not to be messed with Penitent. I mean, this woman is a lean mean killing machine! Packed full of weapons, driving around in one of the coolest cars out there (an Aston-Martin), fighting skills that one would not question and just an all around great character, she’s the bringer of death to all that have it coming to them. All that’s only within the vampire race, but she is one that has been trained to execute the condemned, the bringer of justice to all that are assigned to her. Beside her job, she has an ultimate goal, revenge, but she finds constant disruptions when the opportunities finally present themselves. Now it’s one human male that managed to get under her skin, in her mind and in her heart.
Decker is a local homicide detective that is great at his job and one handsome fella! When a recent murder brings forth more memories of his murdered wife he is determined to solve it. Never expecting to find love or anything like it again, he’s shocked when he runs into a beautiful woman on his crime scene and feels an instant attraction. When he’s introduced to her world and finds out about all that is paranormal, he takes it in stride. But he could never be with one of them, or any woman for that matter, he’s still very much in love with his dead wife.
This read had me turning its pages non stop the entire time with its non stop action, romance, humor, sensuality and amazing characters! Every female character that was a main part of the story was kick butt and I LOVED the fact that they all had backbone, looks, comebacks and moves that put some of the males to shame (*snicker*). I have to mention I do have an ultimate favorite male character that was not the hero, but was a hero and that’s Cain. This dude was so fun, funny, and confident and had a real smart mouth that I really appreciated. He added a great touch to the story along with all of the other characters. I look forward to reading more from Tara S. Wood in the near future.
Redemption in Blood is a well paced and evenly balanced fantasy fiction book. The characters draw you into their world and you find yourself rooting for the good guy's. The story is very well paced and it is easy to follow. The descriptions of the surrounding areas are good enough to firmly plant a solid image into your imagination. Overall the book is very well written. I will be looking forward to reading more books from this author.
This book turned out to be much more than I was expecting. I feel like the cover is a bit mismatched to what’s inside. Vesper (very cool on the name, btw) is this fantastic kickass executioner. She hunts down the sentenced vampire and kills them. It is really quite awesome.
Then a human detective gets a case, and it crosses over with Vesper’s case. They meet. Life will never be the same from that moment on. That detective is Decker Price (also another awesome name!) Decker has had his own share of tragedy, but the pain of that seems to ease when he is around Vesper. You know what that means? They have some super-hot-get-down-to-business nookie!
“This attraction between them was leading her down a lust-laden path of destruction. And she was skipping all the way.”
You know that feeling when you’ve made a decision, and you know it isn’t exactly what you should do, but it makes you happy anyway? That’s what Vesper and Decker have going on. I mean, here they are tracking down the bad guy and they are falling for each other hardcore at the same time. Everyone knows that when you are dedicated to your work like they both are, nothing good can come from an actual relationship.
And let’s talk about the bad guy, who shall remain nameless at this point. His name isn’t a big secret at all, but let’s leave some stuff for you to find out. He is SO bad. But you know what’s worse? His accomplice…er, partner….er, lover? That one is definitely a bad seed. If you look up sick and twisted in the dictionary, you’d probably find their picture. But that really helped make this story awesome. The bad guys are actually bad, and in a horrible scum of the universe way.
The supporting cast is also really great. Cain, a half witch half vampire platinum blond punk smart ass, is my favorite. The guy has some lines, that’s for sure. I loved him. He was some great comic relief at times, but also showed himself to be a true blue loyal friend. I would definitely love to see more of him in the future.
If you want to read a vampire story that is really a hidden gem, I’d suggest Redemption in Blood. It has a raw and dirty factor that will keep you turning the pages. At least, that’s how my experience went. Happy Reading!
Let me start off by saying I really loved this book. I loved how the non-traditional vampire elements (endurance of sunlight, breeding, feeding habits) were mixed with the traditional ones (fangs, bloodlust, enhanced senses, strength, and other abilities). I loved that the action started right away and didn't let up. I loved that there were characters you rooted for and characters you couldn't wait to see get what was coming to them. There are characters you can sympathize with and some who make you scratch your head and say, "WTF?" and "Get over yourself already!" And again, there are the bad guys, who I really, really wanted to see die horribly. And they do! ;)
Decker Price, the human homicide detective, was easy to fall in love with as a character. He was cleanly written as a tortured man just looking for answers...and a way to ease a ton of pain and guilt. Vesper Hyde, the militant vampire female...I admit that I found her very hard to like at first. She came across as really bitchy and way too full of her own self-importance for my taste, and more than once she treats Decker like sh*t, which I did not like at all. But she does mellow eventually so I'll just say I don't think of her as a complete bitch...but still a bitch. Marcus, another militant vampire, I saw as a classic badass, the kind daddies hope their daughters never meet (his being a vampire notwithstanding). Lori the witch is someone I liked quite a bit, though chick seriously needs a reality check (ever heard of not messing with sh*t you don't understand?). Decker's partner C.C. wasn't in the book enough to get to know her well, but she seemed a level-headed gal. And Cain, the half witch/half vampire was awesome as the comic relief guy--his antics made me laugh out loud more than once!
Overall I liked this book A LOT, and I think it deserves my first five-star rating. I definitely recommend it to those of you who enjoy paranormal romances with steamy love scenes with a few dollops of danger and intrigue.
This is not your run of the mill erotic romance. You get caught up in the hero and heroine's race to catch a murderer, one so vile that even the vamps are afraid of him. Vesper and Decker find their suspect isn't the only thing they have in common. The fire that erupts between them nearly consumes them both and leaves you to wonder if they will take the chance on each other or bolt. While the sex is white hot, it's also sweet and sensual as two people start to find much needed healing when they are wrapped in each other's arms.
The secondary characters introduced in this book are begging...PLEADING...to have their stories told too. I can't wait to find out more about the half breed Cain, Vesper's brother Marcus, her friend and powerful witch Lorelei and Decker's partner C.C. The sparks flew all the way around. Who will end up with who or will we be introduced to some new characters to add more spice to the current mix?
Not only are you drawn into the world of these hotties, you are mesmerized by the twisted and sick mind of the killer they both seek to bring to justice. Describing this freak of nature as vicious is an understatement. Reading those scenes detailing past and present crimes will both fascinate and revolt you at the same time. The best analogy I can think of here is the character of Hannibal Lecter. That's right, this serial killer could go toe to toe with Dr. Lecter and give him a run for his money!
So if you're looking for a new take on the world of vampires, witches, and sorcery with characters to die for and sex scenes that will leave you in a heaving puddle on the floor, Redemption In Blood: A Novel of the Penitant is for you.
I was honored when recently I was contacted by Tara Stogner Wood with a request to review her debut novel Redemption in Blood: A Novel of the Penitent. I was pleasantly surprised as I began the book and realized it was nothing like any other vampire book that I have ever read. It was nice to see something new when it comes to this theme.
The book introduces us to Vesper, a total badass vampire. She is a member of the penitent and is investigating a murder. During the investigation, she meets Decker, a detective working on the same case. She ends of being stuck with him by her side, and that turns out to be not so bad afterall. Little do they know they are going to learn a lot from each other.
We are also introduced to some other awesome characters. Marcus is Vesper's protective brother and he will stop at nothing, not even black magic, to make sure that his sister stays safe. Cain is a hilarious character in the story, he literally had me laughing out loud. He always says what is on his mind and has an awesome sense of humor. Lori is the witch and plays a very big role in helping solve the crime. Howard and Victor are the villains and trust me, you will want to reach into the book and punch them.
This novel gave me everything I love in a book. Tara did a wonderful job in her descriptions. I actually felt like I was able to picture every scene. She didn't fall short on describing the characters either. I felt like I really got to know them. There was just the right amount of background, action, sex and dialogue to create a nice balance. I know that I am already looking forward to the next book in the series.
I loved it! I'm so happy I got the chance to read this book because it was such a great story. We have Vesper, and we have Decker (and a lot bunch of other characters that are quite cool, too). They bump into each other during an investigation and although they deny it (at first), we can clearly see the sexual tension sparkling like crazy. There's a lot of sex (which is great), but there's also a captivating story (which is even more great), and that is what kept my eyes glued to my Kindle. I loved how there's a lot of background history for both characters and I hope it gets explored more in the future. A traumatic past for both of them, which added a bit of drama into the story, to make it even more interesting. As I wrote earlier, there are several other characters, that almost have equal importance for the story. I think my favourite one was Cain, although Marcus has that something that I can't quite put my finger on, but makes him more intriguing. I really can't wait to read more of this!!
Tara Wood has delivered a darkly wonderful novel that swings from blood chilling scenes of murder to heart pounding scenes of action (including several in the bedroom!). This is a book which kept me turning the pages from start to finish and is populated with a cast of great characters that capture your imagination from the start. Vesper Hyde is a vampire on a mission and alongside Decker, the human cop aided and abetted by others they stalk the streets of New Orleans and the Louisiana swamps as they try to track down a rogue vampire and a vile serial killer. There are so many memorable scenes here but one will stick in my memory for a long time. I'll simply say that helping a criminal escape from jail can turn out to be a bigger pain in the butt that it first seemed! I have a feeling that there is plenty of mileage left in these characters and look forward to more from Ms Wood. Recommended.
This was an absolutely exciting, kick-ass, suspenseful and romantic read. I really enjoyed reading this book. It had me on the edge of my seat the entire time. The storyline flowed from the beginning to the end and was so easy to follow. The characters, wow! they were something especially Vesper (vampire) the main female character and her friend Lorelei (witch). These were kick-ass females. I absolutely adored Cain who was a half witch and half vampire. He had me laughing so hard. I loved the chemistry between Vesper and Decker which was obvious from their first meeting. Decker was a human detective who was thrown into Vesper's world as a result of a mutual interest. I loved how the author dealt with their romance, it was just amazing. I would definitely recommend this book to lovers of paranormal romance.
I cannot believe this is Tara Wood's first novel. I love a book with a REALLY bad, bad guy and this one had 2! The large cast of characters was well managed and well rounded. The story was well paced and the action nonstop. The mythos was developed nicely without bogging down the reader with the hows and whys. This is the set up for a great paranormal romance series and I can't wait to dig into the next book. My only negative is a personal preference thing. I hate when the female lead rushes into danger without back up. Two times this happens and I don't care what kind of badass girl you are, you don't run toward a serial killer without telling anyone where you're going. Like I said it is a personal thing but it did not, could not, ruin this very enjoyable read.
This book was great! I loved the writing style of this author, it just flowed so well. I couldn't put it down. This book is dark but it has its light moment where you just have to laugh because Cain is just too damn funny! Beware there is a flashback of a rape scene. And frankly Vesper's freak out about the flashback was really rough. There is a little M/M action. Then there was Decker that man knew how to put my emotions through the ringer. Many times I wanted to smack him. But what I loved the most was the flow of emotions that this book brought out. Especially towards the end. Now lets not forget the awesome vampires. I loved how they were described. Reminded me a little of another series.
Loved it loved it!! I loved the action, the love, and the drama!! I just loved it all! Vesper (who's name I LOVED) is a kick booty vampire who if you break any of the council laws she will be the sword of justice. Decker is a sexy cop who lost his wife to a crazy serial killer.. The cross paths over a dead body. They go through a crazy journey to catch two crazy sick killers.... Along the way they find some happiness though with each other! This is a great book that I could NOT put down I stayed up until 4 am!
Can't believe this is Tara's first book! What a great job. The characters are awesome, except for the two very, very bad ones, but the story wouldn't of worked so perfectly without them, perfect balance of good and evil. The story moved quickly, there was no room for filter material just non stop action. Vesper & Decker are hot, sexy, dangerously good, loved them from the start. There are some pretty dark & intense scenes but I wouldn't have it any other way. Great job, can't wait for book two.
This is going to be a great paranormal romance series!!! The first book starts out with Vesper, a bad ass vampire assassin and Decker, a police detective. There is tons of action in this book...with witches, vampires, etc. I know this review does not do this book justice but this is a must read if you enjoy vampire romances. Lots of action and hot lovin'.
Can't wait for the next book! Would love to see Marcus and the witch get together!!!
This book was just right up my alley. It has vampires in it. I really love vampires, so I couldn't wait to read this book.
I loved Vespar and Deckers story. I was taken on a huge adventure and I never knew what would happen next. This book just sucks you in and it doesn't want to let you go. I wasn't complaining one bit.
I hope that there will be in to come in this book series.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. There was plenty of action with not one but two psychotic bad guys to keep you entertained. A strong cast of characters who interacted well with each other drawing you further into the story. I was pleased to find that it wasn't just centered on the budding romance between Vesper and Decker, although having said that I did enjoy the emotional turmoil between the pair making it more realistic for the reader. The love scenes were hot and steamy and well written. All in all a very enjoyable read, I would like to see more of the other characters especially Cain and Marcus. Five stars from me, I was hooked from the start and look forward to see what happens in the next installment.
I'm not a huge vampire fan. Well, actually I love vampires but not the vampire craze. I've been wanting to read this book for awhile as it struck me as 'different' and finally it made it to the top of my loooooong TBR pile and I was super surprised by how well Tara Wood describes the vampire world in RIB. The characters are so believable. They are so flawed (even the vampires are damaged in their own ways) that at times I felt like they were real people. And the world that RIB revolves around - Tara Wood has an exceptional attention to detail that shows in the way she writes. It's easy to get lost in her world and enjoy every minute. I won't drop plot spoilers and tell y'all what happens - grab a copy and see for yourself. But I can say that I have a Decker crush. I can't WAIT to find out what happens next in this story. I want to see where the main characters go, and what challenges they will face as the story continues and I want to know more about the Penitent. Greatness, this book is - I want more!
Redemption in Blood A Novel of The Penitent By Tara S. Wood
Vesper Hyde is a Penitent. She delivers the death sentence of any Vampire that steps out beyond the rules and is sentenced to death. Decker is a cop and their paths are about to cross. Throw in two serial killers and you have a fast paced action story. After reading it I was glad to know that this is only the first one of several to come. Tara S. Wood is a masterful storyteller. This is paranormal suspense and romance woven together to form the perfect read. Don’t take my word for it. Read it yourself. You won’t be sorry you did. Once you start you will have a very hard time putting it down. Five stars Tara for Redemption in Blood A Novel of the Penitent. I have to say I am looking forward to more. Tara S. Wood Redemption in Blood: A Novel of The Penitent
Unique and an interesting concept, this book will have you completely gripped from the start. There is a bit of everything, from romance to psychotic killers, and all of it will leave you wanting to turn the pages late into the night. The character development is flawless, with each of them having their own place in the story, but with it all coming together amazingly well. This book is definitely one to read, whatever your normal genre.
I received an e-copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
Having known this author before reading this, she has always been sassy, quick-witted and often times hilarious as well, so it came as no surprise that I fell in love with her characters and her story as well. Vesper is dark, beautiful, sexy and bold as hell. All while rocking leather and knives. She's the bad ass every little girl wants to grow up to be. (If not, then they should). Decker is the sexy, brooding detective with his own closet full of demons he's been trying to keep at bay. I loved watching these two butt heads, then trying to battle the ridiculously hot chemistry swarming between them all the while chasing down a killer that took so much from the both of them. This story is gripping, suspenseful, sexy (yeah I've said that a few times...it's that sexy) and emotional. Not your usual run of the mill vampire romance at all. I can't wait to read more of this series and see what else happens. Even the supporting characters were so vivid with their own messy pasts which leaves the door open for so much more. I look forward to seeing where Ms. Wood takes this series next.
I can see how many people loved this story, but it was not a good choice for me. Just me. Let me say that again, before anyone gets up in arms about the rating I gave the book. Not a good pick FOR ME.
I'm no longer okay with a story where a main character is subjected to torture. Not a delayed orgasm, not BDSM, but actual physical torture by the bad guy. I've seen it in several books recently, and because of the effect it has on me, I'm just not reading them anymore.
I would certainly read another book by this author.
It was fast paced, exciting and steamy. The story alone was riveting!
From the moment I started reading this book I was hooked, the characters were so strong and passionate you will find it hard not to get sucked right in to the story along with them. And the chemistry between Decker and Vesper was electric!
This is one of the best paranormal adult books (definitely not YA material) I have read in a long time and I am now chewing my finger nails waiting for the next one...... Please Tara say they will be another Penitent book :)
Wood's characters are sassy, sexy, and strong. I almost overflowed my bathtub because I got so caught up in their story. The chemestry between the characters was strong and genuine and I couldn't stop giggling as they interacted. Vesper's story is fast-paced and touching and the sexual tension between her and Decker is through the roof. Wood's writing is strong. She has an incredible gift for storytelling. I can't wait for the next story in this series.
Quite risque like but it held my interest. If you vampires and witches, this book will grab you. I am interested in her writing to check out some of her other books.
