Well once again, I was blown away with how this turned. I was NOT expecting this. And am still reeling over it. Damn.
Valis has had Roba, his father, hanging over his head since his birth. The man tattooed him with an evil tattoo, beat him and abused him almost every day for his whole life. And now he's saying he wants to reveal things. But only if Valis is present. But it was more or less a run around. When Valis and his mentor, Tav, save a sister, Valis knows he needs to see Roba once more before they accompany the sister back to her caravan. But when he goes to see Roba with Tav, Roba blasts Tav with a spell. Valis gets others to help while he deals with Roba, and Roba pins him with magic then kisses him. He commits suicide by pushing his magic into Valis. Valis, of course, is panicked, especially since Roba speaks to him in his mind and he's not the only one who hears it. The historian he's mindlinked with hears it too and they are trying to decide if Roba is being truthful or not. He has to be the one to save Tav because of the dark magic, and now after his friends have seen what he's capable of, he fears they fear him. But now he really needs to train to be in control of the power he has and with this journey ahead of them, the bad feeling in his guy is leaving him extremely fearful. Especially when the historian confirms it.
The troubles Valis is facing in this book are unbelievable. He misses his fathers and are scared for them, he's accelerating at his training, yet feels like he's failing because he can't get his magic under control. Roba is still a thorn in his side. His fear of the man is overwhelming and when he tries to fight back, he can't be side he's not strong enough. Which makes him feel like an even worse failure. One of his friends, Aryn, is coming on too strong and really freaking him out but nice talking to him isn't working. Tavros is who he wants. And to beat everything, Roba committed suicide, forcing his powers into Valis. And now the Sovereign Priest is giving him a title he hasn't even earned yet but now has to live up to. And find a mate for. Things just keep get piled up and it's all getting too much for him. I wept for him so many times in this book, because he just cannot catch a break. Now matter how hard he tries.
Times are changing as well. War is coming. Premonitions are showing different things but they all have one result and it's not a good one. And this journey they are about to take, their survival rests on Valis's shoulders. Shew. Too too much for that boy. Not to mention a few other surprises thrown in there. And not pretty ones.
Needless to say, I'm extremely anxious to see how this is going to turn out. If you guys aren't reading this series, you need to. It's so so good.

4.5 🌟 rounded up

This book concludes the Duty and Sacrifice trilogy, but don't let that fool you. This sets the stage for the next trilogy, Purity and Control, so don't think for a second that you will get a full story.

I am really enjoying this saga, but as I have seen mentioned in other reviews, there is an awful lot of crying. I have mentioned in reviews of the previous books how tactile the characters are, but it is starting to get a little old. Other than that, the storyline flows nicely from Avristin, the second book in this trilogy.

Valis is still missing his fathers, but his training is far exceeding Tavros's mentoring plan. And while Valis still fights his own demons, I have to remind myself that technically he is just finishing puberty, despite his age. While Tav is patient most of the time, he still calls Valis "kid," and uses his mentor mask when needed. And, although there are brief hints, Valis's infatuation still appears to remain one sided.

The plotline throughout this book is Valis and his encounters with Roba. There are different ways this happens, but Valis finds himself afraid yet determined at each meeting. That is until Roba attacks Tav, and violates Valis (not in a trigger warning way). At that point, Valis finds himself in a new and unfamiliar, unsettling situation: Roba is dead, but he won't go away.

A new character is added to the group of friends, which leads to Valis, Tav, Seza, and Zhasina leaving on a quest. And, to make Valis's life just that much easier, his best friend Aryn just refuses to take a hint. But before they leave, the Sovereign Priest throws in a twist that has the powerful historian, Thyran, about ready to burst. After he has a talk with the four young travelers, he gives a dire warning...which of course is where the trilogy comes to an end.

Happy reading!

This series just keeps getting better and better with each book. And each book has left me wanting the next book right away. This book did the same. The more I learn about Valis the more I like him.

When Valis was first introduced in this series, he was not even half he person that he has become. He was beaten down and had no self confidence what so ever. But over the course of these books I have watched him emerge from his shell and become a completely different person. Yes he is not all that confident in using his powers yet but even that is getting better and stronger for him.

I think this transformation is due to Tavros more then anyone else. He not only pushes Valis to become better at his training but he also knows how to comfort Calis when he is feeling overwhelmed or when he is not confident in something that he is doing. In my opinion Tavros is the one that Valis is meant to end up with.

Major issue there is Aryn has gotten it in his head that he is in love with Valis and he is turning more aggressive towards his brother Tavros because of how close Travis and Valis is concerned. I am not so sure that if Travos and Valis are mates that Aryn would lot do something to one or both of them. I can see that Valis is becoming an obsession to Aryn and that is not a good thing since Valis does not return those feelings in the least towards Valis.

With this book more secrets have been revealed and more questions as to what is going to happen next has arisen. I cannot wait for Support to come out and I pray that Thyran's visions do not come to light since Valis's has a hint into what is store for their future.

This was truly an incredible read and I cannot wait for the next read. Devon has definitely got an incredible series with this series. It is definitely a winner.

In this installment Valis is still within the walls of the monastery. He is missing his fathers who in the previous book left for an assignment and has not returned. He continues training in hopes of gaining information from Roba when they face off. His birth anniversary is celebrated, there is an event with Roba. He finds out a truth about himself. He makes a new friend. This new friends brings about a new journey for Valis, his love interest Tavros and friend Seza. Tavro's younger brother, Aryn, is intent on winning Valis as a mate and has formally asked to be able to court him.

I liked this installment. As with the other books it was easy to fall into this one an lose myself within the pages. It was intriguing how birthdays were taken so seriously. Valis being advanced in his studies and being told to take suitors more seriously made me anticipate what was to come. I liked that the author left readers with some mysterious forecasting of a tragic event that could be detrimental for the future in their travels. It was a good building book for the series and I enjoyed the culture/world building.

This book was provided to me for free in exchange for an honest review.

Oh Vesper. You just keep reeling us in. Book 3 in the God Jars is blessedly full of answers to all (well most) of the the questions from book 2. We get to see sweet Valis face his fears and and really get a handle on his powers. I can't say much about this one without spoiling all the fun for future readers but I highly recommend this series to anyone who loves angst, magic, action, laughter, and enough sweetness to rot your teeth out. These characters really grab you by the feels and just drag you along. Possessed ends in a similar fashions as Saviors where we get this vibe that Valis is about to begin a new journey, this one with its own special set of adventures, lessons, and sacrifices. Oh and lets not forget emotional upheaval. Now keep in mind this is book 3 in a series that, once complete, should be 9 books long.So yes there is cliffhanger, but it's totally worth it. And personally, I'm hoping Valis will talk Devon into a couple more books than just the original nine.

Although with an engaging story, several plot twists and ideas with a lot of potential, along with a start that grabbed me from the first page, this book got slower and slower as it went on. I felt like the story was going nowhere for several chapters. I liked that Devon decided to take a few risks and push the characters out of their comfort zone, but I hope she stops protecting Valis as much as she's been doing so far.

Some odd things happen in this volume. Beware of spoilers: Super slow burn, but highly enjoyable. Really enjoying the story telling and the epic quest to return the missing god jar and stop the followers of Qos. After three volumes, finally getting used to all the petting and platonic kissing that happens in the monastery.

Stage 5 clinger

Of all the things to get stuck on in the book Aryn's behavior is the one that stands out the most. Not Roba's nonsense and invasions, not the new person, or the sudden jump in status. Aryn and his stage 5 clingy self and jealousy. He's been told to back off. He's been told what pushes boundaries and why that's bad. Yet he still gave an inappropriate gift, still crawls in his bed pretending friendship but pushing for more, is guarding Valis like a feral dog a side of beef, and still guilting him for desired responses knowing the strain it puts Valis under. I don't like the kid. I really really don't. I'm almost hoping he gets pulled for behavioral corrections or booted from the program at this point. He shows more signs of Qos than Ph... whatever his name is.

This was harder for me to read for some reason, it was hard to put down the first two books, but for this third one - it took me a lot more effort to want to pick up book and continue reading. The main character has changed quite a lot. His two fathers, we didn't get to see at all during this book, since they're on their trip. I rather liked Aryn as a character, however, he is being portrayed as rather annoying - MC is getting annoyed by him etc.

I still really like this series though, and a lot of interesting things happened in this book, particularly with his sire. MC gets closer to his mentor, Tavros. No romance/sex in this book, although MC likes Tavros. I've read reviews for book number four that indicates they're going to even get closer though soon.

TBH, not much happens in this installment, and yet EVERYTHING is happening. Valis’ life is changing so fast that he fights to keep it the same. There are some lovely moments, and I can feel the attraction between Valis and Tavros growing. How is it that Tavros is so blind to it? The possession referred to in the title is the most interesting aspect of this installment. I don’t want to get into to it for spoilers, but I’m extremely curious as to where this is leading. Valis journey continues and I’m looking forward to the field training for the the quartet. And how is it that Aryn, who used to be so adorable, is now a horrid little creeper with NO boundaries? The Monastery’s HR department needs to get on that QUICKLY!

Valis and Tavros continue to train. Their differences bringing them closer, “Tavros was dark and stormy, where Valis was sunshine and summer skies”.

The story doesn’t advance much action wise in this book. A lot of introspection on Valis’ part. I really wish we could see more of Tavros’ feelings. Valis has to contend with his birth father for most of the book (a really nasty person). I liked this book but it was a bit slow and ended kind of abruptly. But with the next book the beginning of a new set of books I can sort of understand that. The author has created quite a vivid world with the series.

This series trapped me since the beginning so I couldn’t do anything else but to read book 3 to see how Valis story continued and I didn’t left the book until finished. Now, the training intensifies and danger closed around him, while struggling with his magic, his heart and his friends and trying to live up the expectations everyone created for him. Finally, everything is becoming clearer and in this book you’ll get a glimpse of the wonderful world built by the author. You need to read the previous books to understand the complexity of the trama. Loved it!
I received this book as an ARC and this is my honest opinion.

Love this series!!!

The story continues with Valis and Tavros and their group of friends. Tacos and Valis are getting a long much better than in the last book. Aryn is overstepping a few boundaries with Valis, and Valis doesn't want to hurt him. Roba may or may not be upn to something, hard to tell yet. And now Valis and Tavros are leaving on a journey with two of their friends, one of them new to the group. Really, you must read this series, it gets better with each book. Hopefully Valis will see his adopted daddies again soon. Ok, go forth and read!

I absolutely love this series. In this book Valis gets to experience what it’s like to have someone celebrate his birthday, unfortunately his birthday was never celebrated so for him it was just another day. To be honest he didn’t know when his birthday was or his true age which I found extremely sad. Valis’s responce to the way he’s was treated on his birthday was way to cute. I truly love this series regardless of all the fighting and Valis’s sperm donor being a jerk. A truly great series, enjoy.

I thought the third book has a great steady pace. The characters are still likable and pull at your emotions. Loving how the story is playing out. I hate when the book comes to an end, that’s how much the book is pulling me into the world the author made. Can’t wait to read the fourth book to see what happens next.

This is the third story in the series. Valis has begun war training, thou he is training more for magic training. He is extremely attracted to his mentor, Tavros. Valis’s father, Roba is demanding that Valis visit him, but Valis isn’t willing. Well written, strong characters, and fantastic story line. I am voluntarily leaving a review form an ARC that I received. My reviews are solely based on my thoughts and opinions.

This series just gets better with each book! The world in which this series is set it so very well built, it is easy to drift into it within your mind. The characters are so well written you feel you know them. While this book does leave you with a cliffhanger, it is well worth the wait for the journey into the next installment of this wonderful series.

This series continues to amaze me! I loved seeing Valis growing into his own, and it was nice that he seemed less immature and more rational. This book seemed to be a lot of set up for the next installation in the series, but that did not take away from the story. I was still hooked from beginning until end and can not wait to see where it goes from here.

Valis has fantastic character development and struggles with his magic and learning. Tavros is a good influence on Valis and his training but there is affection which seems unrequited. Aryn who is Tavros's brother develops almost an obsession with Valis and it gets uncomfortable at times but not too much. Secrets revealed and personal growth with a great narrative flow, a fantastic read.
