I am confused and somewhat impressed. This book did NOT go in the direction I thought, and it's because of the H, who appears to be completely out of his gourd. He engages in the most elaborate and bizarre plan to get the h's attention, and he is an absolute jerk until some switch is flipped, whereupon he is over-the-top protective of her. There was never any really good reason why the h fell for him, but she did, which makes me think that someone had told her about the saying, "Crazy in the head, crazy in the bed," which I suspect would totally apply to this H because he's clearly willing to do anything.

I gave this four stars because it has some record-scratch moments and I was genuinely surprised at how OOT the H was. It's strangely madcap, bizarre and comical, but I'm not sure if it was intentional.

Amazingly good for a book written in 1965, much better than I expected.
The heroine is a young school teacher. She lives in a remote village in a small cottage. Her life is rather bleak but she is content as she has really never had much in life. She stumbled on an old man in a cottage on the moors and finds him quite ill. As he has no one to help him she befriends him and nurses him thru his illness. Shortly afterwards he is whisked away by family and she never sees him again. Some time later a stranger shows up and says that "Old Angus" is actually Sir Angus and that he is dying and wants to see her immediately. He actually dies before she can see him and the family treats her atrociously. Turns out Sir Angus was quite rich and he left his entire estate to her. The family considers her an adventuress and usurper, especially Sir angus's nephew Angus who has inherited the title but not the family estate or fortune.
The heroine is bewildered and confused by the inheritance and tries to give it back but the will states that if she forgoes the inheritanc it's to go to an obscure charity. So Tina, the heroine, keeps the inheritance. She buys some new clothes and decides she wants a car. She doesn't know how to drive so she needs a chaufeur. Young Sir Angus, insinuates himself as her chaufeur, and continues to be obnoxious.
By todays standards the heroine is a doormat altho she does have her moments of standing her ground. Sir Angus is kind of a kick as the chaufeur altho also kind of a brat. It does have a rather abrupt but sweet Hea. As usual for 1960's HQN a kiss means I love you and we're getting married.

This was such a lovely story. I really enjoyed reading it. Tina an orphan and working as a school teacher in a remote English village, tends to an old man called Angus for a week and befriends him. The old man later dies leaving all his wealth to Tina and she realizes he was a Baron.Tina is shocked and she receives hate from old Angus relatives especially his nephew who is incidentally called Angus and is now the new Baron.
Tina is in London meeting the solicitors and meets Dr Alaine who is a good relative of old Angus who helps her with shopping and buying a Bentley.Tina is looking for a chauffer when the hero new Baron Sir Angus offers to be her chauffeur shocking Tina. He explains that he is in love with a women who father expects him to earn his living and he wants to prove them he can.Sir Angus has spent all his life spending his fortune and idling and now decides to get serious.
What follows is their interaction as an employer employee, and Tina heads to the country house left for her by old Angus.
Sir Angus and Tina keep arguing a lot and also spend good time in each other's company.Angus finally reveals he fell in love with her at first sight and took up the chauffeur job to be near her and he has no girlfriend and proposes marriage to Tina who had started liking him and the story ends on a happy note.
I really liked the dialogues and how the story paces without dragging.Looking forward to reading more books by this author.

Another classic little romance. Orphaned Tina is left a fortune by an irascible old man who she rescued and nursed through an illness while teaching at a small school in the back-blocks of northern England.

Of course there are a raft of relatives left angry and annoyed but none more so than the hotheaded namesake of the old man Sir Angus Gifford who inherited the title but nothing else.

After an explosive meeting it seems they will be deadly enemies and Tina is relieved that Doctor Alaine Gifford is friendly and helpful.

Yet Angus insists on hanging around, ostensibly to make sure Tina is kept aware of the injustice of it all.

This means that he gets to know Tina and his opinion starts to change. But when his relatives and a putative girlfriend turn up, his duplicity is revealed and it's touch and go as to whether anything can be saved.

I really enjoyed this story, under one of Ida Pollock's many pseudonyms.

A quick little Harlequin romance, a little old-fashioned, but still very enjoyable. Tina is a school teacher in a remote village, but during a snowstorm she helps out an elderly gentleman when he becomes ill. As it turns out, he was very rich and left her his fortune when he died. Of course, his family objects, but they can't fight it and she takes over. Although Tina enjoys new clothes and a warm place to live for the first time, she's lonely. When the old gentleman's namesake offers to be her chauffeur and drive her to her new home in the country, they become closer and a little friendlier despite their immediate dislike and distrust for each other. The ending was just as expected, but a little abrupt. But it left a nice warm feeling, with just a light touch of romance. The story kept my interest despite its simplicity.

Absolutely horrific hero with no integrity who lies and belittles the heroine until the end when he announces that they will marry to an audience, despite not asking her. If only she had said no, then shoved them all out of the house to find someone new/something else to do with her life. With the exception of the doctor, all the characters were morally bankrupt and offensive. I absolutely loathed this egocentric, rude, smug, conceited and unkind hero and I hope he crashes the Bentley on the way to London before she can marry him.
