Makes so very clear the 'Mythology' of Christianity in easy to understand language
The Book your Church Doesn't Want You to Read so easily shows how 'all' religions evolved from paganism, mythology, superstition,and man's 'fear of death'.

After allowing my self-delusion to cause my profession of faith for decades,I could no longer make excuses to attempt to justify continued belief in the god that Christianity espouses who in no way jives with the facts of everyday existence on this planet!

It just became impossible for me to believe what I came to believe as pure unsubstantiated nonsense. However,I still had a few questions,such as why in every corner of the world throughout history does mankind generally believe in a god or gods? 'Fear of death and the unknown/Superstition' is the NUMBER ONE ANSWER!

This book is an excellent source proving that fact,as was Why I Believed: Reflections of a Former Missionary,and BREAKING THE SPELL.

I highly recommend all three of these books to all those who still have some questions even though they have come to the realization that they can no longer believe in religion/God.

Ebbene si, ho abboccato anch'io all'amo! Quello che pensavo fosse un pamphlet si e' rivelato essere solo un bigino (e nemmeno fatto bene). Una raccolta di scritti di vari autori che brilla per la superficialita' con cui tratta argomenti non propriamente semplici. Appurato che il lettore di riferimento e' quello statunitense medio-basso, mi aspettavo che lo spirito di polemica nei confronti "della religione" fosse supportato da un impianto critico decente, ma invece l'apparato scientifico, storiografico e filosofico e' a dir poco deludente. Peccato. L'idea di ripercorrere criticamente, dagli albori, il filo rosso dell' ancestrale paura della morte, che l'uomo chiama religione, era interessante.

I really enjoyed the eclectic nature of this book- its essays touched on so many different topics. it did not go super in depth into many of them, but provided an overview of such issues as female genital mutilation, sex abuse in churches, bible contradictions, and the religious right. The organization of the book was a little haphazard, but this was a very interesting and enlightening read.

Loved, loved, loved this book. Being an atheist in a prodominantly Christian country can feel a little isolating sometimes. This book helps break down other religious dogma with facts. It's very interesting if you are interested in religious study. Don't read this if you are easily offended.

This book is basically a collection of essays on various religious topics and how they have their origins in pagan traditions. I found it very informative and a good guidebook for anyone looking to distance themselves from mainstream religion. It won't necessarily cause a religious person to "leave the faith" but if you're questioning your religion, this book gives some good information on alternative answers to what you've been told by the church.

This book is not as great as I hoped. It does provide useful information and references about biblical errors, and about the ignorance and brutality of fundamentalist religions. However, it is not a very dynamic read.

Un libro che parla da sé già grazie al proprio titolo e al proprio autore, non nuovo a scritture del genere
Devo dire che, leggendolo in maniera distaccata, la descrizione storica e teologica delle religioni è fatta piuttosto bene, analizzandone mitologie e similitudini in modo efficace. È piuttosto chiaro l’intento del libro, pertanto a parer mio occorre leggerlo in maniera super partes per essere obiettivi sul giudizio e per non farsi condizionare
Bisogna ammettere il gran lavoro di ricerca e studio dietro questo bellissimo lavoro, in alcuni tratti leggermente articolato

Un libro che raggruppa diversi saggi, articoli e parti di altri testi, tutti incentrati nel tentativo di screditare le grandi religioni monoteiste, con particolare attenzione a quella Cristiana.
Da persona agnostica, ma molto interessata all'aspetto storico ed antropologico delle religioni mi hanno profondamente urtato la mancanza di scientificità che invece ci si aspetterebbe da un testo del genere, la tendenza ad usare un tono troppo declamatorio e soprattutto le troppe imprecisioni se non addirittura le profonde inesattezze storiche e conoscitive!
Uno errore macroscopico su tutti, che denota la non competenza dello scrittore, è il parlare di Immaccolata Concezione con riferimento alla nascita di Gesù da una vergine, mentre il significato del dogma è la mancanza di peccato originale in Maria!
Probabilmente è vero, che la mia chiesa non me lo farebbe leggere, ma onestamente nemmeno io mi sentirei di consigliarlo a chichessia!!! ;-)

Wish all my friends would read this book with an open mind. The chapters in the book are all writings by different authors, many going back 200 years. Thomas Jefferson's letter to his nephew was very interesting.

I most enjoyed learning about Zoroastrianism and Mitraism and much of what is in modern day faiths came from these two belief systems.

This is a powerful book that most of today's Christians are not ready for but MUST read!!! This should be required reading for anyone over the age 16. Section on the propagation of sexual abuse by clergy members sickened me to my stomach but also opened my eyes to the fact that it happens in Islam and Judaism as well. Definitely will recommend to others.

Non so se la mia chiesa non mi farebbe mai leggere questo libro. Io comunque l'ho letto, perché sono sempre stato allergico ai libri proibiti; però mi chiedo se davvero un approccio di questo tipo può far spostare il credo di alcune persone. Innanzitutto, nonostante questa seconda edizione sia stata ampliata "includendo tutte le religioni più importanti" in realtà si parla per almeno i tre quarti del libro di cattolicesimo e fondamentalismo cristiano USA; il libro è chiaramente pensato per l'americano medio. Ci sono alcune notizie interessanti e almeno a me ignote, tipo quella sulle missioni-lager francescane nella California del XVII secolo - la parte peggio tradotta del libro, tra l'altro; e altre notizie ben note ma che magari i più non conoscono, come le similitudini tra i detti di tante religioni che si possono vedere nel quiz in appendice. Ma buona parte dei vari saggi presenti nel libro contengono una serie di errori storici, affermazioni senza alcun fondamento e contraddizioni tra loro che si direbbe costoro vogliano creare un fondamentalismo areligioso, perché essi pensano che i seguaci del fondamentalismo cristiano siano così stupidi da potere accettare anche questo... e forse magari non hanno tutti i torti. L'"umanesimo" che dovrebbe essere il punto a cui i curatori tendono è insomma una religione ancor più confusa, mi sa. Consiglio comunque di leggere Stephan Hoeller sull'ermetismo americano, nel senso di Ermete Trismegisto, a pagina 475; e soprattutto il cristianesimo come codice segreto per indicare le conoscenze sumere delle piante magiche presentato da John Allegro a pagina 283. Almeno vi divertirete un po'. Per quanto riguarda la traduzione, faccio solo notare che "l'immacolata concezione" non c'entra nulla con la nascita di Gesù, e mi sa che non sia un errore nel testo inglese.

A must read.
50+ articles and reports by prominent atheists, free thinkers, and ministers [most former, some current] exploring all the problems, fallacies, and out right lies propagated by religious leaders. While most of the articles relate to christianity, other religions are criticized at as well. Most disturbing to me are pieces about the organizations like the Dominionists who want democracy gone and this country ruled only by christian religious leaders. We are closer to that now than we were in 2003 when this book was published.

The book provides a rather broad overview of atheism, but does not always welcome the label, and from which the reader can easily jump to other books and authors. The usefulness of the book mostly ends here because it is a bit outdated. However, there are a lot of classic writings in the book that are worth reading despite having more modern and relevant texts.

It is a good book to have in any library at least to check once in a while how disbelief has changed over the last few centuries, and in effect, how it changed the world.

Un libro ipercritico su tutte le religioni del mondo, che però non soddisfa il mio appetito di conoscenza, mi aspettavo qualcosa di più dal punto di vista della religione cattolica e cristiana, mi aspettavo qualcosa sul vangelo di Giuda e Maria, vangeli non riconosciuti e insabbiati dalla chiesa cristiana. Su alcuni punti ci sono anche delle forzature, tipo "perché nella bibbia ci sono di seguito due passi identici" magari, per esempio un errore di stampa no? Mi è piaciuta ampiamente la parte che approfondisce la religione mormona, ma su altri aspetti come la pedofilia nella chiesa cristiana risulta abbastanza vaga, molto probabilmente perché il libro è antecedente allo sconvolgente caso Spotlight.

Questo libro è una raccolta di scritti di circa 40 autori diversi,riguardo a svariati temi teologici e storici. Malgrado la copertina mostri i simboli di diverse religioni, il testo tratta prevalentemente la religione cristiana, da un punto di vista soprattutto americano. Gli argomenti esposti vanno da questioni dottrinali ad analisi storiche della Bibbia e relative incongruenze.
Io, da ateo convinto, non convertibile, vi ho trovato diversi spunti interessanti che potrei in seguito approfondire.
Veramente notevole la dichiarazione di Bertrand Russell a pagina 555, dal titolo "Cosa dobbiamo fare". Lui l'ha fatto, io lo condivido.

Hard to give it a rating as some of the essays, articles, random quotes were very interesting, others not so much. Overall, I would give the compilation 3 stars for being all over the place in terms of content and quality. It was enjoyable to read, and much of it will make you think. I would not be quoting anything without verifying the facts as most of it is very one sided.

Although there is much information contained in this work, it feels somewhat haphazardly compiled. Additionally, some of what it discusses seem to be more in the realm of urban legend or conspiracy theory rather than reputable fact. Still, there's a lot of food for thought, and the book is readable.

Raramente decido di sconsigliare la lettura di un libro. In effetti questa è la prima volta che lo faccio e a ragion veduta. Avrei potuto investire meglio i dodici euri e novanta, solo se lo avessi saputo.

Consiglio sempre di leggere tutti i libri, convinto come sono che "ogni libro è un uomo". Ma gli autori di questo libro, che sembra abbia avuto molte copie vendute oltre oceano, la prima cosa che avrebbero dovuto spiegare è l'affermazione contenuta nel titolo. Spiegare, cioè, perchè le "altre" chiese "NON" farebbero leggere ciò che essi suppongono di avere scritto nel loro testo.

In effetti essi non fanno altro che riprendere argomenti triti e ritriti, antichi e già proposti altrove e da altri, carpendo la buona fede del lettore e promettendogli chissà quali grosse scoperte ed argomentazioni.

La verità è che, di tutte le "altre" religioni, si parla soltanto del cristianesimo-cattolicesimo e gli attacchi sono rivolti esclusivamente al mondo cristiano. E mentre non ci dicono a quale religione dare retta, ci invitano a pensare con la nostra testa. Ed io con la mia testa scrivo ciò che dico.

Non perdete il vostro tempo a leggere le 585 pagine di un libro che vorrebbe essere una "antologia" e che invece è soltanto una disordinata e disorganica presentazione di testi su argomenti scritti da illustri sconosciuti che dovrebbero avere un ben diverso approccio su argomenti sui quali l'uomo pone da sempre interrogativi e sui quali non si dovrebbe così impunemente speculare, carpendo la buona fede dei lettori, credenti non credenti. Insomma, questo libro è una vera e propria "americanata"!
