Chase provides women a chance to discover the heart of God and what it is that He wants from us. This study takes a look at seven major events in the life of David, and his psalms that flowed out of those experiences. David was reckless, broken, sinful, passionate, and humble. The message of his life is that God wants the deepest part of us to truly know and love Him. Through this study, women will move beyond the appearance of godliness and learn to truly adore God. What are you chasing? We are all chasing after something that we think will make us happy. But if we are all honest, it feels like trying to catch the wind. We want to believe God is real and to live like it.

When I saw Jennie Allen had released a new small group study, I was very excited. Last year MOMS group did Stuck and I enjoyed how it made you dig and think more. After reading the above snippet and saw that it was the story of David's love for God, I had to get it.

When the box arrived, I opened it right away to see if followed the same format as stuck. In the box came a study guide, leader's guide, DVD, and question cards like Stuck. Only this one seems to have more depth of questions to it. Now all I had to do was find a group to do the study with. Both of my study groups were in the middle of studies. So, I tapped a closer resource...my girls. Sure, they're a little too little for all of the questions but they were amazing at how well they grasped most of the topics. Kids don't need to come back from lessons learned, they're already so in touch with their faith. I took notes from what the girls and I went through so that I can see how close their answers will come to the grown ladies when I get a chance to work this study with them.

My girls loved the DVD portion of it. They didn't want to stop watching. Their answers to the questions were either right on or far out. When their questions got too far out, I knew that we were done for the day.

The way Jennie Allen walked you through David's like and tied it to what we go through was amazing. What are we chasing and what should we be chasing? Who are we, what is our identity? We need courage. We need to be obedient. We need to have belief. We need repentance. We need to surrender completely and fully to the Lord. We can't keep this or that piece. He wants it all. She wraps up the study with the idea of being chased down and connects it to "chasing down" their adoption of a boy from Africa.

The leader's guide breaks down what the goals and responsibilities of a leader is and how to encourage discussions. Each session is broken down into a main idea and a main goal you want to meet each week.

The discussion cards have a key scripture and 12 questions for each session. I didn't use the cards with my girls yet. As I was reviewing the material to write this, I noticed that the girls might enjoy answering some of these. I remember from Stuck that the questions really got the conversation going and that the conversation usually turned to answer some of the other questions.

I love a study that shows you how to read the Bible and see your life inside of it. This study does that. I think it would be best used with women who have experienced more in/of life because of the depth of some of the questions. But any age could find value and knowledge in the teachings Jennie Allen has put together here.

Amazing study! I can only say "try this!" At the conclusion, you'll really want to understand more about what's important in life. For me, it took a bit to appreciate some of the challenges, but the almost 2-month study helped set some priorities.

completed this with a small group of wonderful women. what Jennie writes and the activities to complete really make you reevaluate what you are pursuing. I loved what she had to say in the DVD'S. A few of the sessions brought me to tears realizing just how unfathomable God's love for us is.

How do we renew our hearts to run to Him?

Jennie Allen wrote a magnificent bible study called Chase to discuss this question. (I was given the opportunity to review this book by gift of the publisher. See full disclosure at the end of this post. Click here if you missed the interview from Jennie shared recently.) Jennie tackles what we’re chasing, and she helps us address it because she’s tackling it herself.

This bible study includes short 8ish-minute segments, a study workbook, a leader’s guide for small group studies, and a set of conversation cards for small groups. I love how this bible study set is set up (and packaged).

“When something feels empty, it’s pretty natural every day to wake up and want to fix it. We were built to chase something. We were built to worship. So, every day, we wake up and we chase the things that we can see or we can chase an invisible God.” – from the “Introduction” video segment of Chase

We study, see, ask, and lead. As a group (or individual), you read weekly pages on your own and view Jennie’s video segments together as a group. Also during your weekly meetings, you set out the conversation cards and ask, reflect, and discuss the questions she provides. These questions aren’t fluff, either. This entire study is a core study. It will get at you.

Jennie doesn’t speak perfectly in the videos, and I like that. She’s not a perfect person. I can relate.

“The grace God gives us in defining who we are changes everything.”

From the end of the introduction section in the study guide, it’s as if Jennie expects us to realize how lacking we may find ourselves. That’s a starting point to see how much we really need to chase God.

This study’s format is unique and strong. The study is 8 weeks long with the following chapters:

-Introduction week
-Identity
-Courage
-Obedience
-Belief
-Repentance
-Surrender
-Chased Down

The study itself leads you through sections of King David’s story along with various verses sprinkled throughout each week’s reading. We begin each week with an introduction from Jennie then study a passage of Scripture. Jennie writes a few pages of thoughts in each “chapter,” then we read a psalm of David’s and respond to reflection questions. Four “projects” wrap up each week’s readings with a verb focus like “wrestle,” “discover,” and “consider.” These projects call for serious reflection. The discussion question cards require honest answers, and only your honest answers will propel your legs forward in chasing Him.

“David’s life was remarkable only because He believed in God and the God he actually believed in was remarkable.” – p. 138, Chase

I’m still gaining from this study so much, I’m recommending it to one of the small groups I attend for a study this fall.

Disclosure: I received a copy free from the publisher in exchange for my honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.
