Though famed for prowess in tourney and war, Etienne DeGuerre now found himself at odds in the Battle of the Sexes. For his opponent, Gabriella Frechette, was a woman of singular beauty…and single-minded resolve. One who had easily stormed his defenses, and laid siege to his unsuspecting heart.
Award-winning author Margaret Moore actually began her career at the age of eight, when she and a friend concocted stories featuring a lovely, spirited damsel and a handsome, misunderstood thief nicknamed "The Red Sheik." Unknowingly pursuing her destiny, Margaret graduated with distinction from the University of Toronto with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature. During that time, she also became a Leading Wren with the Royal Canadian Naval Reserve, where she learned to use a variety of weapons and had the weepy experience of being tear-gassed. In addition to being a wife and mother of two, she's also been an award-winning public speaker, synchronized swimmer, an archer, and studied fencing and ballroom dancing.
Margaret sold her first historical romance and the premiere book of her Warrior series, A WARRIOR'S HEART, to Harlequin Historicals® in 1991. Thanks to Janie of Romance Book Lovers group who recommended this. 2 rom couples. The MCs had 2 love scenes. Gave this medieval 4 stars.
Finished this on 03/12/25. Lady Gabriella's sire an earl had died. Her brother Bryce quarreled w/ sire 2 years ago & left. Where was bro?
Warrior Etienne De Guerre was awarded the earl's castle by the King. This was his 10th holding. To Lady G, it felt like an invasion. Etienne, some of his men & his beautiful mistress Josephine, claimed her castle/ home.
Etienne offered her a purse stuffed w/ coins, to leave. She declined. Next he required her to wash his long tunic in the river. Next she was named Josephine's (hereafter Josie) maid. The hero wanted Lady G. to work as maid, to work off her father's debt.
Lady G. defended her late sire's decisions, until, with time, she realized her father had been too lenient w/ tenants (low rents) & poachers. Sire had been a spendthrift and his accounts were in the red.
The hero and Josie respected each other, but they felt no romantic love for ea. other. Josie befriended another man & this grew into love.
The love story. The hero had a yearning for Lady G. but did not know how to act or put this into words. He had been feared as a warrior, widowed twice (but not close to either woman) & lonely but resigned to his single status. They had 2 love scenes, 1 in the chapel! He knew how to smile AEB his wedding day!
Oh yah I finished this book last night. My first harlequin romance let alone historical. Hehe. Got it at a garage sale for .25 cents… pretty funny and cute :)) it’s got the whole hurt you trope but w minute spice
what a delightful read ! i was captivated from the start. it's definitely ur book if u like cinderella kinda stories. the book cud have been more than a 3 star. what i did not like was dat etienne was committed 2 another woman throughout the book n had regular sex wid her. she was not his mistress but more his concubine. they slept in the same bed every night. yet he had the hots 4 gabriella. i dunno what 2 make out of dat type hero. i also think they shud have had sex sooner, maybe a forced seduction. i'm not saying i like rape but it's unbelievable etienne controlled his lust, especially in medieval times. i thought the book was more focused on gabriella converted into a maid, it wud have been more passionate if etienne cud not control himself where she was concerned.
Very bland and straight forward. It evokes no emotion and then the issues was solved in a paragraph and didn’t match the progression of Etienne and Gabriella’s relationship. The last 20% you can skim because it was simple straight forward but didn’t match Etienne’s personality AT ALL. I fished it so I gave it three stars but it’s not a book I’d repeat.
It’s started off good and I thought it was going to be a good story but at the end it was a let down.
Baron Etienne DeGuerre has been given a castle and land that once belonged to the Earl Frechette. When he arrived at the castle, the son of the Earl was missing, and only the daughter, Gabriella, was there to meet him. Now, he found himself in the battle of the sexes, as Gabriella was a beautiful woman with a single-minded resolve. I enjoyed the story.
