I basically read this book on auto pilot. From the very first chapter I got a sense of how the story was going to play out and as such I had little to no expectations of this book being amazing-the best I could hope for was not to hate it. And I succeeded! The hero, laird of the people, is being betrayed (as per the title). He doesn't know who in his ranks wants him dead but the idea of one of his clan or even one of own family members could turn against him make him ill. So, he takes it upon himself to travel to the fabled land of the Mystical Forest to seek the aid of the witches who live there. It's said that if a man is able to survive the tests put before him that the witches are honor bound to help him. So he battles the dragon, nearly dying in the process but defeating the beast and wakes up to the vision of a beauty woman before him. The heroine has almost been aching for love. The idea of having the connection with a man like her sister has for her husband is something that the heroine craves. So when the brave knight comes into her fold, the same man she's dreamt about for years, she knows that he is meant to be her destiny. She eagerly leaves the safety of the magical realm she grew up in to travel with him back to his people. Though she is naïve and innocent of the world when it comes down to it she is brave and ready to defend herself and the hero at a moments notice. I loved that about her. And the hero basically fell in love the second he saw her but her powers and awe inspiring abilities make him admire her. For a brief moment he actually tried to refrain but acting on his desires for her. From the moment they left the protective realm they have encountered nothing but danger and mayhem so naturally the hero feels guilty about subjecting her to such things. But, as was the case with most of the problems in the book, the heroine easily pursued him other wise. No their real test comes in the form of the main goal the hero had in unearthing the traitor and the heroine will do anything to see the hero safe and happy. As I said previously, I neither loved nor hated the book. Honesty, I didn't really have a true opinion of it as it never caught my attention. The characters were okay, the plot was okay but all that didn't amount to exciting or passionate. Rather a flat line.
