So said the code of the West for women alone on wagon trains. But newly widowed Jessica Beaumont had a baby on the way, and what kind of man would willingly take on another man's child? Apparently the rugged, handsome kind, for wagon train scout Finn Carson staked his claim on her early and swore never to let go!

Finn Carson was an honest man

who honestly wanted Jessica Beaumont to cherish and love forever. But would this fetching beauty accept him if she discovered his connection to the danger stalking her? Or would their chance at happiness be lost before it was truly found?

Carolyn Davidson began writing in 1986, knowing absolutely nothing about the craft. Her first three books were rejected by Harlequin.

She met Dixie Browning at a Harlequin dinner in Charleston, South Carolina, and told Dixie she was writing, but that she feared she was too old to begin such an undertaking. Dixie's response spurred Carolyn to pursue her dream. Dixie said, in her own inimitable fashion, "Well, honey, you can't start any younger!" And she was right.

Having spent her life as a wife, mother, grandmother, and working woman, she's privileged to have a career that makes her dreams possible. Writing historical romance gives her the opportunity to travel, to visit all those places where our forefathers staked their claim on this country of ours. And then she goes home and writes their stories, maybe not exactly as they lived them, but as her imagination portrays them.

Carolyn lives in the South, where romance thrives, and where the sun shines almost every day of the year. In fact, some days it is difficult to stay glued to her computer, especially when the birds are singing and the flowers are in full bloom.

She lives not far from the ocean, close to Charleston, South Carolina, one of the most romantic cities in the world. Moreover, time at the beach is easy to come by. Does she enjoy her life? You bet! Harlequin allows her to write the books she loves, and her editor is patient with her quirks and foibles. Her family, though scattered in various states, is supportive, and her husband is a constant source of inspiration.

I'm trying to decide what to rate it. Probably ★★★★✩ to ★★★★½. I really like this author, although she's not everyone's cuppa-tea (some think her too dull); she is a comfort read for me, as I know what I'm getting: a straight-forward, old-fashioned frontier romance. However, this time around she added quite a bit more Romantic Suspense.

In this one the heroine is widowed on the wagon train trail west and must choose another husband or go back east at the next settlement. She happens to be pregnant. However, she has some bad guys after her, as her dead husband had a deed to a gold claim.

Wagon train scout Finn Carson fell in love with Jessica Beaumont when he saw her in St. Louis with an ill-tempered brute of a man (her husband). Jessica’s husband is killed along the trail (because of the deed to a mine); the wagon master tells Jessica she must marry again or be left along the trail.

Finn Carson starts wooing Jessica immediately and eventually gets her to marry him. However, Finn has a secret that could destroy their relationship. When the secret comes out, Jessica doubts Finn’s feelings for her.

I was eager to read this story because the plot seemed interesting. However, I soon found that Jessica was TSTL*. As a very pregnant woman, she decides to leave Finn and join a departed wagon train of her friends.

Frankly, Finn was too good and too honorable for Jessica. She kept asking Finn why he married her – I wondered too.

I felt like I was reading a Harlequin Presents instead of a Historical. The heroine was so wishy washy that I just wanted to scream. The hero alternated between lying to her to meet his own needs and worshiping her from afar. Between the two of them, I wanted to bitch slap someone. Not to mention the cover couple - ugh! He's supposed to be 26 yet he looks like he's almost 40. She's supposed to be 24 yet she looks barely 18. Neither resemble their descriptions in the book. 1.5 stars at best.

DNF It was crude, poorly written, and unevenly paced. I was so disgusted that I quit after 3 chapters. One star was exceptionally generous.

Bought eBook for kindle
I really liked this book. It featured some of my absolute all time favorite themes. And Carolyn Davidson is one of my favorite authors for historical western romances.

Nice story, the heroine was a little irritating at a few points, but overall a good story.
