WIth his marriage clock loudly ticking, Lord Edwar Laurence's wife quest had brought him to a most unsuspecting lady. The ever-capable Miss Emily Howland was certain the dashing Lord Edward had set his sights on none other than her uncommonly beautiful and woefully innocent cousin. Determined to protect her charge from the nefarious advances of Edward, Emily placed herself in the path of his conquest, damning her own reputation forever. Or so she thought. For Edward's object of passion had always been Emily. Now he had to prove to his reluctant bride-to-be that hers was the only surrender he desired!
Kasey Michaels is the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of more than 100 books (she doesn't count them). Kasey has received three coveted Starred Reviews from Publishers Weekly, two for the historical romances, THE SECRETS OF THE HEART and THE BUTLER DID IT, and a third for contemporary romance LOVE TO LOVE YOU BABY (that shows diversity, you see). She is a recipient of the RITA, a Waldenbooks and Bookrak Bestseller award, and many awards from Romantic Times magazine, including a Career Achievement award for her Regency era historical romances. She is an Honor Roll author in Romance Writers of America, Inc. (RWA)
Kasey has appeared on the TODAY show, and was the subject of a Lifetime Cable TV show "A Better Way," in conjunction with Good Housekeeping magazine, a program devoted to women and how they have achieved career success in the midst of motherhood (short version: "with great difficulty").
A highly praised nonfiction book, written as Kathryn Seidick, "...OR YOU CAN LET HIM GO," details the story of Kasey and her family during the time of her eldest son's first kidney transplant.
Kasey has written Regency romances, Regency historicals, category books including novellas and continuities and a few series "launch" books, and single title contemporaries. She has coped with time travel, ghosts, trilogies, the dark side, the very light side, and just about everything in between. Hers is also the twisted mind behind her ongoing Maggie Kelly mystery series starring a former romance writer turned historical mystery writer whose gorgeous hunk of a fictional hero shows up, live and in color, in her Manhattan living room – to melt her knees, to help her solve murders, and to leave the top off her toothpaste. And, says Kasey, she's just getting started!
This light-hearted Regency was great fun and amused me. These two quotations by different characters summed it up for me.
"Mama says they’re all positively dying for love of me. I feel so terrible—it’s such a responsibility!” She turned on the seat to look up into his eyes, her own drenched with quick tears. “You don’t think it will really come to that, do you? I mean, it’s not as if I could possibly marry them all, is it?”
"They’re numbskulls, the two of them, but they’re my numbskulls, and I won’t have you hurting them.”
Edward and Emily make an interesting couple, with even more interesting kinfolk. As is true with every traditional Regency, the question is never will the couple end up together, but rather how they end up together. And this book was delightful.
I really enjoyed this madcap regency romance by Kasey Michaels. Lord Edward (Ned) and Emily are both wonderful characters. This book is chock full of eccentric characters and will have you laughing out loud at every turn. Emily is in London for the season playing companion to her younger cousin, Georgiana, during her come out. Emily, only twenty years of age and believing herself firmly on the shelf, is, in a word, a dowd! She dresses in awful clothes and wears her hair in a very unbecoming manner. For all that, she is sweet, kindhearted, and intelligent.
Lord Edward, brother and heir to a Marquess, sees beyond Emily's dowdy appearance, and has fallen totally in love with her. Emily, however, hates the very ground his "too handsome" self walks on. In order to get Emily's attention, Ned comes up with this crazy scheme to pretend he's courting Emily's beautiful, if completely stupid cousin, Georgy. Emily, of course, thinks Ned is up to no good with her cousin and is determined to protect the beautiful clunch from him. This is the premise for the story, and a very entertaining story it is!
The dowager Duchess, Emily's aunt, is an absent minded, lovable, idiot, who also needs looking after almost as much as her young daughter. Emily has her hands full with the two nuts. Lord Edward's older brother, the Marquess, Reggie, is eccentric to say the least....he actually probably has some kind of mental disability though I'm not sure which one. He is very childlike and extremely lovable. Ned loves Emily, but he is determined not to marry anyone unless they like and are liked by his brother, Reggie. Ned's crazy scheme to get Emily's attention by annoying the crap out of her gets a jolt when the Duchess announces their engagement in the Gazette after erroneously believing that Ned compromised Emily.
How Ned deals with this unexpected complication, wins his lady love's heart, and finally achieves his HEA makes a very engaging story! Throw in Ned's two best friends, Henry, who fancies himself a poet, and Del, another lovable dolt, and you've got yourself the makings of a full fledged comedic, madcap, regency. If you are in the mood for a lighthearted, laugh out loud, sweet, clean historical romance then you will enjoy reading this book. Enjoy!

This is one of my fave Kasey Michaels books, and for good reason. Michaels' skill always seems to shine brightest in her most humorous works, and this book absolutely teems with hilarious dialogue and loveable characters. If you were a fan of dear Aunt Lucinda, you'll love meeting Georgy, Old Horry and Reggie in this delightful tale...and enjoy good laughs along the way as Lord Edward and Emily find love.
This would be my second of the author’s regency’s that I have read and I will say it’s better than the last one. I love Heyer and it’s impossible to put this series up with her stories, it will always pail. But for a light regency, with hilarious characters and a fast pace, it works. I enjoyed this as a fun vacation read. I thought aspects of it were still out of time period or too sappy. But for the most part enjoyable.
Very good, however, I did read this a while ago, so I don't remember all the details. Michelle Kasey AKA Kasey Michaels always writes very good romances, including this regency romance.
The lady did protest too much, but it was delightful when the light finally dawns and love triumphs. A fun hand full of rather attics-to-let characters
