The Highland Air Was Heavy With Revenge

And Mairi MacInnes wanted to breathe deeply of it. Until an arranged marriage with Robert MacBain, an enigmatic lowland lord, whisked her away to a life of adventure, passion—and unspoken love.

Generous of spirit. Mighty in battle. Indeed, though he lived in a world of silence, Robert MacBain had gifts any would envy. Yet the Baron of Baincroft lacked true love in his life—until he met and championed Mairi MacInnes, his tempestuous chosen bride. But would she ever hear and heed the loving whispers of his heart?

Lyn's foray into book-length fiction began in the early '90s, and she signed her first contract with Harlequin Historicals on Valentine's Day, 1996. "Flowers, candy, kisses, and a book sale, too! There will never be another day quite like that one!" she says.

"I always loved to write and even got excited about doing reports and term papers. I neglected other homework just to make that short story for English class as riveting as I possibly could."

Even so, she never really considered writing as a career until much later. Instead, Lyn studied art and worked in Europe while she visited the places she now writes about in her historicals. At that time, she was painting those sights and selling pictures.

While working at Boeing as an illustrator, she had the idea of trying to freelance book covers. Since she liked to paint faces and figures, romance novels seemed a logical choice. However, the field of cover art is highly competitive and she discovered it would take a great deal of research and preparation.

While studying the market on covers, she became firmly hooked on the contents of the books and decided to try writing instead. "Definitely one of my better decisions," she admits. She is still an avid romance reader and manages to read an average of four per week in addition to one or two books outside the genre.

Lyn feels a special affinity for England and Scotland with their wonderful castles and intriguing history. The American South and Southwest are her favorite settings for contemporary adventures.

She and her husband, Allen, both natives of Georgia, live in North Alabama near their two children and four grandchildren. "The family contributes to my research," Lyn says.

"They buy me books, clip articles, sketch costumes, and sometimes act out scenes. Even the grandchildren serve as inspiration for the younger characters."

Why? I seriously read this book because I wanted to know how the hero managed to meet the heroine, marry her, travel across the country with her, sleep with her, begin a battle over her...without her realizing he's deaf.

The answer, in case you're wondering, is that she’s exceptionally dense.

I always have trouble getting into the Harlequin Historicals for some reason - they don't have enough of the detail that I like in a historical romance, so I am sorry to say this book wasn't a winner for me. I appreciated the way the deaf hero overcame his difficulty but I didn't like the way heroine didn't know about it at first then figured it out but didn't tell him - I wish it just would have been stated to the heroine at the beginning so it wasn't such a plot point. The heroine's impulsive behaviour was a bit too much sometimes as well.

Ok, here we go. This Harlequin book, The Highland wife wassss great!! It had action, twist, back stabbing, ex betrothed and new wife to a new land and league, along with a handsome, sweet, charming Highlanders. Oh, and two battles. Mairi and Rob were great together in this book.
I loved Mairi, strength, determination and the will to not be bullied through this book. I personally was saying Woohoo, as she took down Jeahanne or whatever her name was. I only wished that she did the same for Thomas. Oh well, there’s always next time. I give my suggestion to read this book. Good job

I really loved this book. I thought it was so neat to have a deaf hero, and to see how he has compensated and become a very strong, capable man during a time when people with disabilities were discounted and not even considered worthy of having their own properties and running their lives. I also enjoyed the relationship between Mairi and Robert. Lyn Stone knows how to write romantic and sensual, and interesting love stories. A must read.”

Oh boy....I hate it so much when I read books that I WANT to like but I just CANNOT! I 've tried so much to see the good points (a few!) instead of all the really-are-you-kidding-me ones...but in the end, the rolls of my eyes were so many that I felt I was cheating on all my 3 star rating books.

The Highland Wife aka the Highland Misunderstanding Everything on legs

Darlin'.... no! JUST NO! I like fiesty and sassy and big-mouthed heroines (hm...why I wonder..) but tried as I might Mairi didn't cut it for me - too big a mouth, too quick to judge and judge wrongly, too many the misunderstandings. We can't like every Highland lassie, can we? (I want to but this one here did everything in her powers for the opposite...

The Deaf Warrior of Good Intentions and Bad Decisions

I like my heroes of the protector, warrior kind, bonus points added when scarred, deformed or otherwise marked for life with their deficits. This hero here, Rob, was deaf but more than capable to avenge the death of his wife's father and ultimately win the damsel's heart, despite his deafness. BUT though through the whole book he meant well he did nothing or almost nothing to prevent the ever-growing false impressions all around.

End result: Longing for it to end sooner than later.

*2,5 stars and...no.

Ben scritto.

This book just didn't do it for me. It wasn't horrible but not good. I did like that he was deaf and the challenges that that would bring. However this book was just one miscommunication after another. There was no need for it going on for son long. It just became annoying after that.

3.5 estrellas, redondeo a 4

Silent Vows & Discovery

Wow, I really enjoyed this great story of Mairi and Rob. If I could I would give this 6 Stars! Lyn Stone weaves a very fascinating and touching story. She also provides humor, which is great.

The Laird MacBain, Rob, goes to meet his betrothed, wed her and bring her to his new home. He finds she is truly a beauty and courageous. He hopes they will be happy. He also hopes she has been told about him. This was one of the stipulations, which he himself had imposed in order to marry. He finds she is beautiful.

Mairi is a dutiful daughter who loves her father and wants to make sure that her betrothed is a good and kind man. She agrees to the marriage because her wayward cousin, Ranald, who is the one who will take over the clan once her father dies wants her for himself. He is evil and will do anything in order to obtain what he wants. Her father realizes this. Mairi is excited because her betrothed is handsome and big. She tries to be kind and make conversation with Rob, but he is rather aloof and gruff, speaking no more than three words at a time.

A siege occurs and all heck breaks loose, decisions are made rapidly. Things do not go as originally planned. These two will face challenges.

This is my first read of this author. It will not be my last. I realize this was book 2. Now, I will read book 1 and then 3.

Dear Trouville, sign language in not useless, I don't care in which era you have lived.
I didn't like Jehanne nor Thomas, not one bit. And Henri wasn't married yet (but wasn't his story before this book?! D: Whatever [Edit: Apparently not]). The last part was a bit so-so, hence the rating.

Good plot about a deaf man in the year 1335 with exciting ending but it dragged in the middle with overlong delay of truth and characters mentally speculating making my rating 3.5* Marriage arranged between Mairi and Robert, who lived in a world of silence.

Just a little hard to swallow. Finger spelling in the 14th century? But I just kept thinking of sign language even between tribes in North America and Africa, tried to buy it.
