Her Westward Train Was Hell-Bent for Heaven

Despite the gunfight Annalee Amory found herself caught in. Where else could she be headed when Hunter Moran, her roguish cowboy rescuer, seemed on closer inspection more angel than devil? For surely it was paradise she'd found in his arms!

As one of the near legendary Guardsmen, Hunter Moran rode the range helping to tame the West. Why then couldn't he tame his own impulses where the impetuous Miss Avery was concerned? But really, if ever a filly needed taming, it was Annalee, who claimed to be on a mission of love!

Well, I gave this book 3 stars because the beginning was enjoyable. But the plot becomes so ridiculous that I am tempted to lower my rating to a two.

Annalee meets Hunter as he's escaping from hired killers trying to kill him. He jumps on her train and right into her. As the two attempt to escape the three killers, sparks fly, and not just from the train wheels. The killers were sent by the owner of the ranch adjacent to Hunter's who is trying to acquire Hunter's spread.

For some reason Annalee assumes the killers are lawmen and Hunter is an outlaw. Nevertheless, she chooses to aid him.

The two meet again at a dance. This is where the plot goes downhill. I know it's supposed to be a farce but it's so ludicrous that it defies belief. Annalee is pretending to be a French flirt so her cousin can test her fiancee's resolve. Annalee's wearing an outlandish outfit. Naturally, Hunter is there. From her clothes and behaviour, Hunter assumes Annalee is a lose woman and kidnaps her to save her from her "protector." He wants to become her protector. In his defence, he did initially want her as his wife but was scared to pursue her because everyone around him keeps dying.

In the end, after everything seems to be working out, Hunter has a meltdown and the two separate for awhile. I absolutely hate when that happens.

I really enjoyed the relationship between Hunter's mother and the Englishman who pursues him. He was awesome.

This last book in the series of four books just wasn't as great as the others. The story starts with a bang; Hunter Moran is racing his horse to evade some men who want to kill him; finally, he jumps aboard a moving train to escape. When he does, he runs into Annalee Amory, a ditsy (in a good way) young woman who thinks Moran is probably an outlaw. She helps him but refuses to give him her name. Of course, we know they will meet again.

The plot calls for just too many coincidences to be realistic. However, the characters are interesting and interact well with each other. Hunter's problem (Frank Sutton) was mentioned heavily at first; then the story becomes a comedy of misunderstandings and dialogue between H & h. Then the story returns to a serious discussion of Hunter's problems with his neighbor. The story seemed almost episodic, instead of a smoothly moving plot line. 3.5 stars

4 Stars! ~ Hunter Moran has had more than his share of grief; the loss of two brothers and his father in a short span of time. He refuses to take a wife for fear he would lose her too. Hunter's plagued by a greedy neighbour who not only wants his ranch but his mother too and he’s not afraid of killing Hunter to get them. Annalee Amory is traveling West to Denver to attend her cousin’s wedding and then on to Trinity Falls to see her sister, Victoria and meet her new brother-in-law Logan. She sees a man riding his horse hard to catch the train; he’s being chased and shot at. Annalee soon finds herself helping the man that could very well be an outlaw. Though running for his life Hunter can’t help being smitten by the beauty trying to help him, and when they part and she refuses to tell him her name, he can’t stop himself from kissing her. Annalee’s adventure doesn’t end there, when she arrives in Denver her cousin forces her to act like a French tart to test her fiancée. Hunter can’t believe his luck at finding the beauty from the train at a Denver Society party, but much to his astonishment she’s trying to seduce a man on the veranda. So he decides that she must be fair game and he kidnaps her and takes her to a friend’s cabin where he proposes that she become his mistress. Unfortunately, Hunter doesn’t realize his mistake until it’s too late and Annalee’s reputation is ruined. Can matters be any worse? It turns out Annalee is Hunter’s best friend Burke’s sister-in-law!

From the first pages this is a whirlwind of adventures and misadventures for Annalee and Hunter. The sparks fly not only because they are both stubborn but because of the strong and bewildering attraction between them. Though outraged and wanting to pulverize his sorry male hide, Annabel realizes that Hunter believes he’s saving her from a shady life and she finds this endearing. She’s fearless, sassy and sweet, and Hunter finds himself confused at all the ways he needs her. I loved this fast paced, laugh-out-loud and yet, wonderfully poignant love story. It was wonderful to meet up with Logan, Burke, Gideon and their wives, and the secondary love story between Hunter’s mother and a British Earl was a great bonus. This is the last book Ms. Tracy published and I’m sad for that. I would very much love to meet more of her tough and sexy heroes.
