The Knight's Bride

Rate this book
SIR ALAN OF STRODE WAS A MAN OF HIS WORD

But when his promise to fulfill his dying friend's last wish saw him marriage-bound to the man's widow, Alan wished his own sense of duty not quite so strong. For the Lady Honor was NOT aptly named. And how could he, a man of truth, ever trust a bride who had already played him false?

With a babe on the way and a rejected suitor in hot pursuit, Honor needed a protector she could control, not a Highland warrior. Alan was proving to be the most intractable of husbands, and what was worse, the rogue had somehow managed to scale her defenses, and lay siege to her heart…

Lyn Stone

Lyn's foray into book-length fiction began in the early '90s, and she signed her first contract with Harlequin Historicals on Valentine's Day, 1996. "Flowers, candy, kisses, and a book sale, too! There will never be another day quite like that one!" she says.

"I always loved to write and even got excited about doing reports and term papers. I neglected other homework just to make that short story for English class as riveting as I possibly could."

Even so, she never really considered writing as a career until much later. Instead, Lyn studied art and worked in Europe while she visited the places she now writes about in her historicals. At that time, she was painting those sights and selling pictures.

While working at Boeing as an illustrator, she had the idea of trying to freelance book covers. Since she liked to paint faces and figures, romance novels seemed a logical choice. However, the field of cover art is highly competitive and she discovered it would take a great deal of research and preparation.

While studying the market on covers, she became firmly hooked on the contents of the books and decided to try writing instead. "Definitely one of my better decisions," she admits. She is still an avid romance reader and manages to read an average of four per week in addition to one or two books outside the genre.

Lyn feels a special affinity for England and Scotland with their wonderful castles and intriguing history. The American South and Southwest are her favorite settings for contemporary adventures.

She and her husband, Allen, both natives of Georgia, live in North Alabama near their two children and four grandchildren. "The family contributes to my research," Lyn says.

"They buy me books, clip articles, sketch costumes, and sometimes act out scenes. Even the grandchildren serve as inspiration for the younger characters."

I have had this book in TBR pile and decided to finally read it! I was pleasantly surprised!
The story premise is pretty common, woman flees father and planned evil betrothed, marries another.
This one takes a twist or two! I liked the beginning, it was fast paced and not too sappy. This was written in 1998! NOt bad for being an older Harlequin I've read some Harlequins recently that left a lot to be desired. The first half of the story was fast paced and kept my attention. However,I kept trying to figure out of the baby Christina was actually child of her first husband ? Was he gone to battle for a year? They only had 2 months together, enough time for pregnancy to occur. Time line seemed a little off to me. I liked that Alan accepted his role as husband and father so readily. It was a little strange that Honor had to seduce him into consummating their marriage. Hello! Bad guys are coming, need to be married in all ways! The middle of the book kinda dragged with their continual second guessing how they felt for each other and lies or not lies! Arguing, sleeping apart, he loves me, he loves me not. Honor bugged me with her annoying tendencies to second guess Alan's love for her and Christina. Alan bugged me towards the end too, lost his kind, happy , loving emotional side. It was confusing with all the fathers/inlaws being introducd. I feel like Honor's dad could have been more of a active character, how long was he confined? I would have liked to see the two dad's interact more and talk about their kids and the mess they were in. The seige and capture of said father of Honor was wrapped up to too neatly, like ok , lets solve this little conflict. Next! Even the appearance of the dreaded angry betrothed seemed addly added to the story line. The end was wrapped up neatly, could have ended a couple of times! I k ept reading to see how things were going to be resolved, I guess that is a sign of a good story writer! I need to look for other books in this series.
Overall, I enjoyed this book, it was a fairly fast read.

🍁📚🍂

The protagonist was so authentic, kind, funny and so cute, I laughed with some of his honesty.

Otherwise with the protagonist, it's Stubborn and it just annoys me, I ruin the story.

I think the story was longer or the marital aspect of the characters did not develop more because it became eternal for me from 60%.

Sir Alan of Strode helps his friend Tavish in his final days. When Tavish writes a last letter for his wife and asks Alan about it, Alan agrees it is good and he promises to see it through. Alan cannot read and does not realize he has just promised to marry Honor, Tavish's wife.

After The Bruce reads the letter, he Knight's Alan and commands him to follow through with the letter- still unbeknownst to Alan what it says.

Honor reads the letter and feels it is a trick from Alan until he promises he did not write it and cannot read or write.

So begins their marriage with ups and downs and threats. Alan the True finds out his bride had not been truthful in some things and the road is rocky for them.

Her father is after her because she ran out on a betrothal with her first marriage. Her neighbor is trying to marry her (before Alan came) because he knew Tavish was dead. Her betrothed comes to taker her back.

Great story.

I really liked this one. For a HQN Romance, it's not bad. I was a fan of Alan, especially in the beginning. He was so endearing. How he was so excited and in awe about the For the time period, he is definitely a catch! I'm sure there weren't many men around that time that would be as understanding, thoughtful, patient and caring as he was. Honor as far as heroine's go, I understood where she came from, her motivations for her actions, past and present. I thought the ending tidied things up well.

Lowkey good? Read it back in the Summer of 2023 at the recommendation of my friend E-Tarr. Honor is a bipolar baddy and Alan is hilarious. Sex scene aren't for me but I read through them and survived. Very well informed about the period, though the misunderstanding plotlines bring the book down in my rating, it at least has the in world excuse of the characters having a language and cultural barrier.
I would likely read again, but had to give the copy back to her.

Lyn Stone is the the reason I ended up with a box of Harlequin romances. I really like her books and to get them off ebay, bought lots including her books. I have learned my lesson. I now buy hers one at a time. Unfortunely I still have about 30 Harlequins to go through. But, they haven't all been horrible, just more than half.

A sweet well written romance set in Scotland around early 1314. The main characters, Allen of Strode and Lady Honor who is in hiding from her family to avoid marrying a French count who's prior two wives died under mysterious circumstances. During those times women did what they were told by their fathers or their husbands. Even tho it doesn't seem as plausible for her character to be as outspoken and aggressive, I liked her. Overall a very enjoyable read.
