Fun roller derby best friends (with an old lover in the mix) sapphic romance. I believe it is the first ever boobless romance I've ever read, some sex, but all down under. Ok, but boring by the end. 2.5 stars

Roller derby skating - an adrenalin rush, tough and fierce with small local leagues, some inter-state championships and few sponsors.
You have to have the right outlook and love for it and Ryan has it in spades. Her ex moved away to Arizona years ago. Quite frankly, she hasn't really gotten over being dumped by Stef and now she is back in Washington with a girlfriend no less!
Dependable Devina is Ryan's bestfriend and teammate. Always reliable, the shoulder to cry on when needed. With Stef back in town, Ryan calls on Devina for help and so a fake relationship begins....
Lainee Ash debunks my thinking that roller derby is a crazy, body shoving race around a rink while on roller skates. Not so. Yes, the pace is fast but the training, techniques and coaching involved are real. You have to have a certain mindset for that sport. On the romance side, Devina and Ryan stumble through their feelings until realization hits as to who really matters. Reasons and emotions are sorted out aided by prompts from supporting characters and personal revelations. The storyline is fast paced, the sex torrid and the ending appropriate - together at the Championship.
I liked the inclusion of an arial act performed during a dinner - a nod to Ash's first book.

A sporty friends to lovers…

Ryann and Devina have been best friends forever. In high school, straight Devina was Ryann’s date to prom after she came out. Since then they had done everything together, even their favourite team sport, roller derby.
Ryann’s ex Stef had left several months ago, leaving Ryann a mess, and Devina was there to pick up the pieces.
I had known nothing of roller derby before reading this, just a sport I had heard of many years ago. I found the description of the sport fascinating.
The romance between Ryann and Devina is good. Not a deep fluffy romance, more a realistic one. Both characters are well written, their desires, hopes and fears are communicated to the reader, making us feel as though we know each woman, and we can feel their intense love and desire for each other.
Personally I really loved Devina, a warm cute character. I found Ryann a bit more difficult, but for me, her saving grace is her honesty, not wanting to hurt either Devina or Steff.
The one frustrating thing for me is the lack of communication between the women, each not willing to tell the other of their years of yearning. That however is a main plot point for the story, so it is a necessity.
Stef is the character we love to hate, until we learned more about what happened, then we feel more sympathy for her. I did expect another plot twist, maybe making Stef into a bad girl again, a double bluff, but that never happened!
Overall, a very good, readable story.
