So ... I bought this unusual book in April and hurriedly read the first 3.5 months viewing to read it day-by-day after that. I did so pretty faithfully, but I ran out of reading material in September so I decided just to finish it then. The book is full of amusing anecdotes, philosophical observations, and eyewitness testimony to historical events. I was disappointed in the entries for April and June as they did not have as much WW 2 material as I hoped. But the September chapter made up for that. And occasionally you get a picture of history that differs from today's version of events. For example, Stephen Spender pans George VI's speech from September of 1939, the same speech that is celebrated in the Colin Firth movie. Finally, William Soutar is a bore!
