The Hangman's third victim twists in the wind outside Inspector Hilary Casgrain’s new home. It's not the ‘Welcome To Elk Ridge’ message she was expecting.

Hilary Casgrain just moved halfway across the country for a fresh start. She’s desperate to trade the shootings, corruption, and gangs of the city for small-town law enforcement. And she’s convinced that a steady diet of nothing more serious than drunken tourists and fender benders is just what she needs to get her life back on track.

But a serial killer spoils Hilary’s dreams of a low-key career change.

Her arrival in Elk Ridge goes further downhill when she meets the sergeant at her new posting. It’s her nemesis, George ‘Goat’ Rundle. Goat’s odd sense of humor grates on Hilary’s last nerve, but he’s deadly serious about protecting his team. Hilary fears she’s doomed to be the ultimate outsider. Even worse, the sight of Goat Rundle is a grim reminder of the worst moment of her life. And she still holds him responsible.

Hilary is also troubled by her newest officer. Riley Mills is young, smart, and eager. She's also a dead ringer for The Hangman's victims.

As if The Hangman isn't enough of a threat to the small community, vandals are escalating their racist attacks from night-time property damage to the assault of a young girl.

The animosity between Hilary and Goat simmers under the surface. It's an advantage The Hangman could exploit. Can Hilary steer the investigation back on track before Riley has to pay the price?

Hilary wanted calm and quiet but slowly feels her old anger rekindling. The Elk Ridge PD might never be the same.

I love writing every day and the result so far is three mystery series, and counting. I’ve been retired from teaching for a couple of years, and am totally immersed in my new career as a mystery writer. I hope you enjoy the results!
The Murder In Season trilogy features injured detective constable Claire Beckett.
The longer Poodle Versus… series is a reader favorite. It features small-town action, zany characters, and a Nasty Small Poodle who will capture your heart.
This year I plan to release several books following DC Holly Towns, starting with Goodbye Port Alma.
The Free Prequels to all my series are available on my website, AnneShillolo.com.

Murder at Elk Ridge - I enjoyed reading this book as much as I enjoyed the Port Alma Murder Mysteries by this author. Always well written with good characters, good dialog and good story lines making it easy to get immersed in the drama. There are quite a few cases going on from hate crimes to serial murders as the new Inspector begins life in a smaller town. There are twists and the story is beefy. No silly dramas or ridiculous thoughts or actions but well oiled team work between the police force members, and the townspeople. 5*

Murder at Aspen Creek - The prequel to a new series by Ms. Shillolo. Interesting, intriguing with immersing story lines and good characters. A lot going on in this quick to read story. 5*

Port Alma Murder Mysteries:
Goodbye Port Alma - Surprised and excited to find this author. Finally after all the trash I have to wade through to find an author that cannot only write an interesting story with good characters and good story lines, but also does not use profaninity, knows proper grammar and punctuation and does not feel the need to add current politics. Refreshing. Fast-paced. Ready for the next book. 5*

Goodbye Lake Street - One big mistake made: Why wasn't 911 called either while she was chasing her or after the other incident was under control? Fifteen minutes is too long to remember the chased. Otherwise, a good relaxation. I missed the three previous books but it did not affect the story, a stand alone. Good, clean read with good characters and good story lines. Easy to read and fast-paced till the last page. 4*

Goodbye Foxbridge Lane, prequel - Interesting, short introduction to the Goodbye series. Good characters and good story lines. 4*

Goodbye Sky Field, #6 - Well written with intense story lines had me immersed in the pages, taking my time to read this book. Holly did well with all the cases from one day's events and the personal attack that puts her behind the desk. The ending was a cheerful balance to the heavy topics unfolding through out the story. Probably the best book so far. 5*

Goodbye Linden Square, #7 - This series is one of my favorites. Good, intelligent characters blended with good story lines, old and new, and good dialog weave a tapestry of interest and intrigue that is hard to put once reading begins. It is difficult to write a review without it becoming a book report since these books are so interesting with characters that are not silly idiots. There is a twist that was funny and well done, and that character will be a great addition to the regular cast. 5*
Port Alma Murder Mysteries end.

Inspector Hillary Casgrain had fought her way through the system to get where she was.  Now, after past tragedy, she made the decision to settle down in Elk Ridge, a smallish tourist town, where she will eventually retire in 10 years or so.  And where the most excitement would come from writing traffic tickets.  It's just her luck that the first face she sees is Sargent "Goat" Rundle, a man from her past life who dislikes her as much as she dislikes him.  She sees him as lazy and ineffectual.  He sees her as demanding, autocratic, pushy and shrill.  Changes start on her first day in Elk Ridge.  Hillary and Goat find the body of a young blond woman hanging from a tree.  She's wearing a wedding gown.  From there, Hillary finds herself with more trouble than she ever anticipated.  A  serial killer, hate crimes, porch pirates, a Sargent who doesn't believe she has what it takes to work with his little police force, and a small team of constables who are willing to learn, but are out of their depth when dealing with murder.  I've read all the Port Alma and the Poodle Versus series, and I was excited to read this new series.  Inspector Casgrain has to pretty much retrain herself in how to react to her new team, including Goat Rundle.  She is going to have to make all of them believe that they want to trust her and follow her lead, which is quite a challenge for her.  I typically judge how much I like a book by how quickly I want to finish it.  If I start reading and don't want to put it down until I get to the last page, the book is a success for me.  I only put this book aside when I had to - I really wanted to find out what happened.  To me, the Hangman took a backseat for me.  I wanted to find out how Hillary would ultimately connect with Sargent Rundle and the rest of her new team.  Without a close connection,  they may not have been able to solve any of the crimes occurring in Elk Ridge.  I really liked this first book in this new series.   It is another Anne Shillolo series I will look forward to reading.   I received this book as an ARC and this is my honest opinion.

Are you getting bored? Do you need an edge of the seat, hard to put down thriller? Look no further for Author Anne Shillolo's Murder Elk Ridge will be out for release on Amazon on 19th May, 2023.
Set in Elk Ridge, a town in Canada, this book had me completely spell bound with an awesome story, excellent plot, and flawless placing of clues to keep the readers in suspense until the end and plenty of twists and turns. Wow! I am a huge fan of Anne as I am very fond of her other mystery series like Cottage Country Cozy Mysteries featuring Zora Flynn and her adorable poodle, Rocco, and DC Holly Towns Murder Mystery.
I must say that she has done a wonderful job with this brilliant book. Perfect!
The story begins with Inspector Hilary Casgrain driving upto Elk Ridge to resume her new job as an Inspector at Elk Ridge Police Department. She's shocked to find her old nemesis, George aka Goat Rundle who welcomes her and there are introductions all around. Hilary assumes that she would be leading a peaceful life with only petty crimes to solve. Her hopes are dashed to the ground when Goat Rundle leads her to Greta Graf's guest house for her residence but spots someone hanging on a tree branch. Rundle tells her about a serial killer, The Hangman being on the prowl and this is his third victim.
Serial killings aren't the only crimes she needs to investigate. Hilary happens to find two more dead bodies and a series of vandalism and hate crimes. But her biggest concern is the safety of her officer Riley Mills, who resembles the victims of The Hangman. With her limited resources, can Hilary flush out the actual murderer? Many suspects surface during her investigation, but Hilary is at her wit's end.

Murder at Elk Ridge is so gripping that it's sure to entice you away from the idiot box. A hard to put down book which I highly recommend for lovers of great thrillers.
I thank Ms. Shillolo for providing me with this book as an ARC. I am leaving an honest review in its exchange.

Inspector Hilary Casgrain has arrived in Elk Ridge for her new position. She is hoping it is going to be a relatively easy going job. But to her demise she has three murders to figure out and a murder suicide. When she arrives at the Police Station she runs into her old nemesis George (Goat) Rundle. Goat was definitely a work just enough to get by kinda guy. HIlary immediately finds out she is in charge because Superintendent Fraser McBride is out with cancer.

The three murders have all been blond hair and they have a wedding dress on them. They have been hung so Hilary and her team are looking for the Hangman. Riley Mills works at the front desk in the police station but does help out occasionally with the crimes. She has a science background. Hilary finds her very good at her job and she takes a liking to Riley and she pushes to advance her career. Hilary is fearful that Riley could be the next victim because she fits the description of what the hangman goes after.

Lots of different suspects in this book and it is interesting reading the way they go about finding the true Hangman. It was fun reading about the gruff landlady Greta Graf but eventually she was looking out for Hilary. Great book and I can’t wait to read the next one in this series.

I received this ARC from the author and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Hilary Casgrain just moved halfway across Canada for a fresh start. After a troubled career in the big city, small-town law enforcement seems just the ticket to rest and recoup. But she’s greeted by a hanging body near her new home, and the realization that one of her staff is her nemesis from a prior posting. And if that wasn’t bad enough, a possible serial killer makes her regret her move and possibly her career choice.

I liked everything about this book – the plotting, the pacing, the setting, the dialogue, and the relationships between the characters. Hillary Casgrain intrigues me. She was a high and fast climber once, her eye always on the ultimate prize of promotion above all else. An injury that left her with a scarred face and scarred heart changed all that and she’s looking for an opportunity to live life differently. Her desire to close the case successfully is now tempered by her care and concern for her staff.

The plot about tracking down a serial killer who likes to dress his victims in wedding gowns caught my eye, but the relationships between the characters, and going along for the ride as they solved the crime are what kept me there. I was sad when this absorbing, engaging read ended, but so glad there are more in the series to catch up with. I liked this enough that I immediately bought book two in the series and loved that as well. I highly recommend this author and this series.

Moving across the country from a large city to a small tow police force Inspector Hilary Casgrain expected a quieter life with endless nuisance calls. What she got on her first day in town was a not so happy surprise blast from the past and a serial killer who’s struck for the third time. So much for the quiet country life. While trying to track this killer, find vandals who are escalating their crimes and implement some needed updates in the department Inspector Casgrain has her hands full. Will she be able to settle in and find the culprits that are plaguing her new hometown? Read on to find the answer in this exciting start to the Inspector Hilary Casgrain mystery series!
An absolutely enthralling story that will draw you in and keep you on the edge of your seat until the surprising conclusion! I loved the world building and the character development. I felt like I was a member of this small community. I really enjoyed how the entire police force worked collaboratively and how we were privy to each step of the investigations. Intense but not overly graphic, a very well written police procedural that I enjoyed immensely!
I received an ARC from the author. I voluntarily review this book.

We are introduced to Hilary Casgrain, the new Inspector for the Elk Ridge Police Department. Meeting the members of the force, she meets an old nemesis, George Rundle. She wonders if she will be able to work with him in this small precinct. Before she can even unpack her belongings, the “Hangman” murders another victim and Hilary is off and running. Join Hilary and the PD as they investigate not only the current murder, but also review the prior two murders for any commonalities, and handle the other crimes occurring. Will Hilary succeed in her first case and start a good working relationship with all?

This was a great introduction to a new series. It was an intense story with plenty of twists and turns to keep the reader involved. What an entertaining, intriguing storyline. The interaction and chemistry between the characters are wonderful. I can’t wait for the next story! I would give this more than five stars if I could!

This is an enthralling read. Murder isn’t the only crime happening in Elk Ridge. There’s vandalism, hate crime, porch package stealing, tampering with, (but I won’t give a spoiler), & probably drugs. There’s so many suspects, so many red herrings & well placed items to lead you astray in your thinking, & it will keep you guessing until the end. Nothing is obvious. This is so well written. The characters are all strong with interesting back stories. It’s plotted to perfection. You could read as a stand-alone, but I recommend that you read the prequel first “Murder at Aspen Creek”. Then be prepared to read Book 2, as not everything is solved here. There’s plenty of carrot for you to want to know what happens next. And what about the bag? This is definitely a series to invest your time & money in. One of my best 2023 reads. I received an Advanced Reader Copy from the author & I am writing a voluntary honest review

This is the beginning of a new series. The investigation and adjustment to a new job pose some challenges for Hilary Casgrain - particularly working with Sergeant Goat Rundle who she has a past unpleasant history with. The storyline was interesting and the cast of characters were as well. The strong points of the book are the strong character development, straightforward investigations and solid teamwork on the part of the police department without a lot of extraneous drama added in for filler. I did have a bit of an issue with Hilary’s apparent longstanding grudge against Goat. They haven’t worked together for many years and it didn’t quite feel realistic for Hilary to still dwell on their past animosity to the extent she did. This is a well written and entertaining introduction to this new series and I’m looking forward to what happens next.

Hillary Gasgrain is finished with city policing and moves across country to the small town of Elk Ridge where she takes on her new job as Inspector. What a start! On her first day looking out of her house, she sees the body of a woman hanging from a tree. Add to that, she finds her old nemesis, Sargent Rundle who hated her as a pushy cop and she saw him as lazy and slow. And then besides dealing with a serial killer, she has to deal with hate crimes and porch pirates and a bunch of new constables who are not prepared to handle murder, she has a lot cut out for her, especially when Rundle doesn't think she has it in her to tackle her job. With lots of twists and turns, roller coaster rides and edge of your seats moments we are taken to a surprise ending! All I can say, in one word, WOW! I received and ARC of this book but the opinions expressed here are strictly my own.

Inspector Hilary Casgrain is having a busy week. She's moved across the country, started a new job, has to deal with a colleague from the past who is not best pleased to meet her again; and on top of all that, there's a serial killer to catch before another victim is claimed, plus a spate of hate crime and various other open cases. Very little time for Hilary to catch her breath.

And as a reader, that's exactly how I felt too. Anne Shillolo has started this new series at full speed. There are so many plot twists and red herrings, it's almost difficult to keep up. But the writing is as fluent as ever and there are some great characters, ripe for development in future books. Plus the Canadian scenery, as in her other books, becomes a character in its own right. A thoroughly enjoyable read; I look forward to more in the series.

I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

After helping out a small town police force in Murder in Aspen Creek, Hilary Casgrain has finally made it to her new post in Elk Ridge, a picturesque ski town in Canada. But it seems that trouble continues to follow her. Within a day, a body is found, supposed to be the work of a serial killer known as the Hangman. Add that the police are in the middle of investigating a slew of vandalism, and it certainly starts Hilary’s new career off with a bang. But can she solve all the cases that are piling up? Or will she end up buried in an avalanche of problems?

This is an amazing book that I really enjoyed. With the same crime thriller/cozy mystery vibe as the DC Holly Towns series, this new series follows a new protagonist in a vastly different environment. Anne Shillolo is so good at crafting a vivid world with vibrant characters, and this is a great start to the series. If you enjoy DC Holly Towns or just cozy crime thrillers, this book will keep you guessing until the end. From Hilary’s rivalry with an old colleague to trying to be more friendly, this book showcases a protagonist with flaws and strengths that is working to better herself while solving crimes. And that makes this book worth reading in my book.

Inspector Hilary Casgrain is changing her focus. She has accepted a new position in a small town. Elk Ridge is a new challenge for her. She's fought hard to advance her career, but she was frustrated with her situation. This trendy tourist town should be a wonderful change of pace, but that's not the case. A serial killer is stalking Elk Ridge but there's also chalet thefts and vandalism. I knew that Inspector Casgrain was up to the task. I just wasn't sure if she could handle Goat Rundle. He's an unwelcome figure from her past. Anne Shillolo has done an excellent job with this spin off. I liked watching Hilary Casgrain establishing herself in Elk Ridge. She is a smart, powerful woman who quickly has the respect of her new team. The mystery is suspenseful and filled with unexpected surprises. I can't wait to see what happens next.

I am a fan of Anne Shillolo’s writing and this is the first in a new enjoyable series! Hillary Cosgrain is the new Inspector in Elk Ridge, having moved for a different life and to leave crazy city crime behind. But she arrives to discover the third victim of a serial killer, The Hangman, not exactly what she was expecting! Two surprises greet her: the first a past nemesis named Goat Rundle who almost got her killed, and a young woman named Riley who’s a gung-ho evidence processor! This is a pretty fast paced mystery with so many twists and turns it’s a real headache to solve, along with vandalism and some possible hate crimes! A great read. I received a free ARC of the book and write this review voluntarily.

Hilary Cargrain moves across the country as she was desperate for a change in her work load dealing with shootings and corruption. The Sergeant in her new post George “Goat “ Randle is her nemesis. His humour irritates her but he is serious of protecting his team. Hilary is worried about Riley Mills as she is a young , smart and eager. A killer is out there called the “ Hungman” and the community is harassed by vandals and racists attacks. Hilary has her hand full dealing with Goat and trying to solve the crime before Riley becomes his next victim. The animosity between Hilary and Goat is hilarious. I was enticed from the start. I Great Read. I received this book free and leave a honest review. I recommend this book to other readers.

Inspector Hilary Casgrain (Caz) arrives in Elk Ridge & the first person she comes across recognises her immediately. Someone she worked years years ago & never wanted to meet again! Sgnt George Rundle (Goat). Caz finds out that the Superintendent is away I’ll & so she is in charge. Whilst she is looking around her new home she sees someone hanging from a tree. Oh! Goat realises that “The Hangman” is back. This is his 3rd victim. There is also some vandalism going on, which Caz deems “hate” attacks as they are against Asians. So she has her work cut out dealing with all that is going on & getting the police station running the way she wants it to, whatever Goat thinks! I found this a very interesting book to read with the various side issues involved.

Moving to Elk Ridge and starting a new job as an inspector in a small town Hilary Casgrain is cautiously optimistic about the new position. On her first day, in her new tiny home, she looks across her property and sees a body hanging from a tree. This is not what Hilary expected to deal with on her first day in town. When another body is found soon after she and her team suspect a serial killer. Not only must she begin investigating but she must also learn to work together as a team with the new people she is now working with. This is a wonderful first book of a new series. Hilary Casgrain and her team begin learning to work together to find a killer. This is my honest, voluntary review of an advanced reader copy of this book.

I loved the small town feel of this book. Hilary Casgrain is the new boss at Elk Ridge Police Department. On Inspector Casgrain's first day on the job, a dead woman in a wedding dress is found. Other woman are found, were they all killed by the same murderer? Hilary and the rest of the department give it their all to find the murderer. One of their own shares a resemblance to the dead women. Is she in the murderers sight? Do the Elk Ridge police find out who the killer is before another woman, possibly one of their own, is killed? Read this newest mystery by Ms. Shillolo . I can't wait to read the next book in this series.

Murder at Elk Ridge: An Inspector Hilary Casgrain Murder Mystery
(An Elk Ridge Murder Mystery Book 1).

This is the first full length book in this series. There is a novella pre-quell that introduces Inspector Hillary Casgrain but it is not necessary to have read that novella before this book. This is a crime mystery book, with the main focus on Inspector Hilary Casgrain and her team of co-workers, both civilian and police officers and their efforts to catch the bad guys. This task is made more difficult as they are all part of a small community in a region that attracts lots of visitors with a ski resort, hot springs and many other tourist attractions. A great read which had me engaged to find out how the story ends.

Entertaining and Riveting Serial Killer Case
This is the first book in a new series. There is also a prequel that I highly recommend reading first. A new Inspector takes over a ski town's police force and it starts off with a bang! The story is riveting and I did not want to put it down, The story is clean and free of anything gross, bad language, or overt anything. There is interpersonal drama and internal angst as the crew feels their way with a new boss. Several major crimes create plot twists and headaches. Nothing about the story is predictable. I love this author's police stories and can't wait for the next book in this series.

I am an ARC reviewer who received a copy of this book from the author and this is my honest review. Hilary Casgrain is the new inspector of Elk Ridge, a small skiing town. She is hoping her new job, supervising a small police department in a small town, will involve small crimes. The day she arrives she is confronted with the town’s third murder when she spots a hanging body of a young woman in a wedding dress even before she meets all her staff. The author quickly drew me in with the intrigue in solving the murder crimes along with other crimes. I had trouble putting this book down! This is a 5 star plus read which I highly recommend.

Couldn’t put it down!

Newly assigned Inspector Hilary Casgrain was looking forward to the quiet pace of Elk Ridge police department after her time in the city. She barely got a chance to look at her new home before she spotted a dead body out the window and discovered the town had its very own serial killer.

I am impressed by this series starter. It has good plot depth and relatable characters. Everyone needs a dog like Xray! The suspense and twists pulled me in and kept me guessing until the very end. I finished it in one day. I received a free copy but my review is honest and voluntary.

Incredible start to a new police procedural series by Anne Shillolo, one of my favorite authors, who draws you in immediately and keeps you on the edge of your seat until you've read the last word. I really like Inspector Hilary Casgrain who moves to the ski town of Elk Ridge for a fresh start and less stress and loved her dynamic with the other characters. If you enjoy well crafted murder mysteries that you can' put down, don't miss Murder at Elk Ridge. I can't wait to see what happens next to Hilary and the town of Elk Ridge. A new series full of promise. I love the characters in Murder at Elk Ridge. With the wonderful interactions and developing relationships, I can't wait to get to know everyone better. Hillary has her own secrets but the move to Elk Ridge should be just what she needs, an escape from the big city crime. But her 1st day as inspector proves that to be an impossible dream. She proves up to the challenge and solves the new crimes with the help of her new staff. Elk Ridge is a small town with all the closeness and nosiness that entails. I can't wait to see how Hillary and her team fight crime in Elk Ridge.

Very good suspensive book. Really enjoyed

Inspector Hilary Casgrain thought she was entering a very laid back new job. Instead her first day there she is met by a fellow worker who she used to work with and does not get along with her. When showing her her new place to live they looked out the window and saw a murdered woman hanging from a tree. So much for a laid back job.

Casgrain continues to try to get along with her Sergeant Rundle, nicknamed goat. The small police force was very dedicated to their jobs.

Surprise ending. This is the type of book you have a difficult time putting down

I liked the flow of how when she started she had an old
"problem person" she didn't care for. She wanted to work
through and find if they could leave the past behind.
Learn how to work as a team. This was really fast paced,
lots of twist, turns, new friends, allies, learn frenemies or
bold faced liars. Talk about "thrown into the deep end."
It was learn as your going, having to catch-up, make some
new ideas, hoping it is for the better, changes in the current
things are done. Loved how so many things were worked
out in the end all the things were tied together and all
were solved. The town could breath easeier, knowing
it was safe again.

Inspector Hilary Casgrain is starting a new job in a smaller town of Elk Ridge. Her first day on the job she sees Sergeant Rundle, and is not excited as they have a difficult history.
Then a body is found and what she thought was small town policing has turned into a murder investigation. You feel like you are there in the room with the cops during the investigation and even like you have a stake in who the murderer is. What a well written first story in a series. We are all waiting and hoping for the next book to come soon.

Inspector Hilary Casgrain arrives at her new job in Elk Ridge expecting it to be mostly smaller crimes that she'll be dealing with. Instead she steps into the search for a serial killer . Along with this there are several incidents of vandalism that seem to be hate crimes. She has to familiarize herself with the town, the department and her staff while trying to wrap up these crimes.
I really enjoyed the book and think this series may become one of my favorites.

Murder at Elk Ridge Pretty Much Killed It!!

Can’t swear this was 5-star, but I loved it! Must be my small town background. Small towns are collections of characters, mostly normal, but idiosyncratic. Folks you hate intensely for five minutes, but you know you finally love. And stories, plots, engulf those characters and bring them to life. And this one did that, and I thoroughly loved it. They became friends, weird friends, but friends. The way small town folks do.
And now I have to read the prequel … because I didn’t, and I have to!!
