A white Angolan, Pepetela fought as a member of the MPLA in the long guerrilla war for Angola's independence. Much of his writing deals with Angola's political history in the 20th century. Mayombe, for example, is a novel that portrays the lives of a group of MPLA guerrillas who are involved in the anti-colonial struggle, Yaka follows the lives of members of a white settler family in the coastal town of Benguela, and A Geração da Utopia reveals the disillusionment of young Angolans during the post-independence period. A primeira coisa que me apetece dizer sobre este livro é que não sei como demorei tanto tempo a lê-lo. Uma pérola destas e esteve escondida tanto tempo. Uma sátira maravilhosa a uma certa Angola, nem parece que já foi escrito em 2001.
Jaime Bunda é um excelente personagem, e é um livro em que se diz muita coisa séria a brincar.
Recomendo a todos os que gostam de boa literatura em português e livros que não se conseguem pousar.

Um livro caricato, anedótico e satírico. Combina muito bem a crítica com o humor e Jaime Bunda é uma personagem peculiar. No entanto, a ação tem momentos aborrecidos que me atrasaram a leitura, porque me desmotivavam a avançar com a mesma.

Se James Bond fosse angolano, tivesse um nome infeliz e passasse mais tempo a comer do que a resolver crimes, teríamos Jaime Bunda. Mas, ao contrário do espião britânico, Jaime não tem gadgets de alta tecnologia nem um carro espetacular—o que ele tem é muita preguiça, um tio influente e uma missão que nem ele leva muito a sério.
Pepetela transforma este romance policial numa sátira cheia de humor e ironia, desmontando a corrupção, a burocracia e os vícios da sociedade angolana com a leveza de quem sabe que rir é, muitas vezes, a melhor forma de criticar. A escrita é afiada, a crítica é certeira e o resultado é um livro que tanto diverte como faz pensar.

Entretenido relato policiaco de Pepetela sobre el debut de Jaime Bunda, un aprendiz de agente secreto que se desempeña en Luanda, la capital de Angola. Se trata de una narrativa dinámica, simple y ligera, que a través de cuatro narradores describe la historia policial por los barrios de la capital angoleña. Con muchas escenas africanas, pedazos de humor y mucho rigor en el relato, la trama es redonda. Novela muy recomendable, diferente, pero muy recomendable.

Li para um bookclub e foi isso que aguentou a leitura.
Uma escrita de homem, descrições sexistas sobre mulheres (que dispensava), tentativas de humor, e só homens a protagonistas. Uma história de suposto mistério, crimes por desvendar, protagonistas pícaros, humor local (ou tentativas de). O melhor do livro? Difícil, mas talvez as palavras "angolanas" (termos ou calão local), embora sem terem a explicação no livro e nem sempre se conseguindo perceber o significado.
A crítica social a Angola está por todo o livro, e bem entranhada nos contornos ha história.
Enfim, um livro meh. O livro tem uns anos, mas já na altura este estilo de escrita tão "homem" já estaria desatualizado. Nunca li outras coisas do autor, e não fico com vontade. Se estiver errada avisem, pf.

Não adorei nem odiei; sinceramente foi-me um bocadinho indiferente, mas tinha as expectativas mais altas. Esperava uma história mais cómica ou então com reviravoltas mais interessantes, o que não aconteceu. A crítica política e social está bem presente ao longo da história e nalgumas partes até dispensava, pois torna-se um pouco repetitivo. Achei interessante a mudança de narrador e os comentário do autor, no entanto não foi suficiente para tornar o livro mais cativante.
Talvez se o livro fosse mais pequeno e a narrativa avançasse mais depressa tivesse sido uma leitura mais dinâmica e engraçada, mas o final também não me convenceu (achei anticlimático). Com isto tudo, continuo a querer ler a obra seguinte e saber como vai Jaime Bunda.

Jaime Bunda, assim conhecido pelo seu bundão é um agente estagiário que estava condenado a ficar sentado na sua secretária, caso não lhe fosse atribuído o caso de uma menina de 14 anos que fora violada e morta numa zona mais perigosa de Angola.
Na verdade, esse caso esteve sempre como papel secundário durante todo o livro, pois Jaime Bunda acaba é por se envolver noutro caso de teor mais politico, onde acabou por desvendar um caso de contrabando internacional.
O livro é escrito com bastante humor e muita ironia. As personagens têm todas um teor mais cómico enquanto narradas o que acaba por dar outra descontração na leitura, transformando certos momentos quase como se fossem uma paródia.
Na verdade, esse caso esteve sempre como papel secundário durante todo o livro, pois Jaime Bunda acaba é por se envolver noutro caso de teor mais politico, onde acabou por desvendar um caso de contrabando internacional.

To pierwsza książka (z jak dotychczas kilkudziesięciu), którą kupiłem specjalnie na potrzeby projektu – i choć internetowe opinie nie były szczególnie zachęcające, a tytuł i okładka sugerowały raczej literaturę niższych lotów, to był to wyjątkowo udany zakup. Nie dajcie się jednak zwieść promocyjnym opisom – tytułowy bohater co prawda uwielbia Jamesa Bonda, którego poza brzmieniem imienia i nazwiska w niczym nie przypomina, bliżej mu jednak do postaci z książek Hammeta i Chandlera, które zresztą namiętnie czyta. Żaden też z niego tajny agent, a stażysta w centrali Tajnej Policji Luandy, nazywanej w książce Bunkrem. I choć książka ma wyraźne cechy pastiszowe, to lepszym określeniem byłby antykryminał – co prawda mamy morderstwo i śledztwo (i to autentycznie wciągające!), to najważniejsze jest znakomicie zarysowane tło społeczne współczesnej Angoli. Kraju, który wciąż nie wyzwolił się ze swojej przeszłości, w którym głęboko zakorzenione są korupcja, polityczne układy, deprawacja elit i codzienne problemy zwykłych obywateli. Poczynania fajtłapowatego Bundy, którego nie sposób nie polubić, opowiedziane są z niezwykłą werwą i pomysłowością, a choć dramatycznych momentów nie brakuje (punktem wyjścia jest wszak zagadka zamordowanej nastolatki), to bywa tez naprawdę zabawnie, a autor sięga po zupełnie nieoczekiwane zagrania metatekstowe – ujawniając się jako twórca całej opowieści i komentując sposób jej opowiadania przez narratora, którego nie waha się kilkukrotnie zmienić (!). Dzięki temu całość zaskakuje świeżością i równocześnie intrygując egzotyką świata przedstawionego – tłem dla śledztwa są liczne, znakomicie skonstruowane obrazki rodzajowe – wraz z Bundą odwiedzamy największe targowisko w Afryce, będziemy się szwendać po dzielnicach, do których nie zaglądają turyści, nie zabraknie też licznych odniesień do całego kontynentu. Można żałować tylko, że to jedyna w całości przetłumaczona na polski powieść Pepeteli, jednego z najważniejszych pisarzy Angoli, mającego trwały wkład w jej historię (za młodu walczył o jej wyzwolenie, był też odpowiedzialny za edukację w rządzie!). Bo Jamie Bunda zasługuje na powrót!

Hilariante e uma boa descrição dos costumes daquele povo local e bom uso dos clichés dos funcionarios publicos que gastam sem se preocupar. Critica social mas sem parecer politico de mais, recomendo vivamente a leitura deste livro que é um bom retrato da vida em Angola e das suas gentes

This book had been sitting on my shelf for maybe 15 years. It had been a gift but I never paid to much attention to it... until last month. I was immediately hooked after the first pages and I found myself giggling while reading in the subway or at home. Pepetela's got a great sense of humor.

I'm reading a bunch of Angolan fiction right now, so picked this up as it looked potentially more entertaining and less serious than many of the other options. The story revolves around the titular figure, a 20-something very low-level member of some kind of police or security service in Angola. The joke here is that our protagonist is known for his massive posterior, with "Bunda" translating to "Butt" and thus "James Butt" rather than the dashing 007...
The story opens with Bunda being assigned to his first case, the rape and murder of a 14-year-old girl, whose body was discovered along a highway adjacent to the ocean. Despite this seemingly grim setup, it's clear that this is a farce -- unfortunately, farce is hard to sustain, and the broad humor isn't generally that funny. From the initial investigation into the dead girl, the plot spins wildly into other directions, including a Lebanese smuggler, Bunda's married girlfriend and her husband, an Algerian belly dancer, a con artist witch doctor type, plastic chamber pots, an unnamed powerful member of Bunda's own agency, and all manner of local family, acquaintances, and coworkers with their own agendas and bones to pick.
Written by a former guerilla and then Angolan Vice Minister of Education, the book's satire is clearly meant as commentary on the corrupt direction that Angolan society has taken. Everyone (Bunda included) is constantly jockeying for power, influence, and prestige (not to mention use of a car, gun, better housing, more beers, better whiskey, etc.), and truth and justice are only relevant in as much as they can be leveraged to personal advantage. Hierarchy is a key theme throughout the book, invoked in every relationship and interaction.
I found it all to be a bit of a slog, with moments of interest and color. And even as farce, the role of women (and girls) throughout the book is hard to take. I'm really not sure I can recommend it to anyone, even readers with a strong interest in Angolan fiction -- it just didn't work for me.

Other reviews have covered the plot more thoroughly than I would. However, it's a murder investigation, where that angle specifically lies dormant until the very end, resolved as an afterthought. Four-part structure by different narrators, however, it's only the second that's different. Some backstory imparted there, with Bunda and Co. not present. Here's whar to expect ...
Jaime has a police position due to family connections, plodding along as many civil servants do. The murder is high-level enough to warrant a driver, dedicated mobile phone, etc. One thing quickly leads to another until it's clear we're dealing with an international crime ring affecting high-level Angolans. The final showdown reminded me a bit of an Inspector Montalbano resolution, though Jaime is an observer here, not the boss.
He's an interesting character as he's read a lot of foreign detective stories, presumably in Portuguese translations, but not necessarily. Lives with relatives in what I presume is a middle class existence, although visits his mother and younger siblings in somewhat less prosperous circumstances. I lovd that he's a foodie; I was tempted to buy some red palm oil to try a couple of the dishes mentioned! Also appreciated the local setting with Angolan characters. Unfortunately, the plot not so much, which I I found hard to follow with unlikeable characters. We get glimpses into cultural aspects similar to Prescious Ramotswe, but overshadowed by the hard-boiled violent noir aspects.

Co to za koszmarek.. Przeczytałam tylko dlatego, że interesuję się Angolą.
Książka zapowiada się na lekki żartobliwy kryminał, ale oprócz postaci głównego bohatera nie jest tu zbyt do śmiechu. Gwałt i morderstwo czternastolatki jakoś nie nastraja mnie rozrywkowo. Potem już jest tylko gorzej. Nasz bohater głównie jeździ za podejrzanym, który jest albo w hotelu albo w restauracji, i robi przerwy na lunch. Jego problemy sercowe są nieciekawe, a próby wprowadzenia jakiegoś elementu zaskoczenia poprzez zmianę narratora i niby komentarze autora - nieudolne i nic nie wnoszące. Wątek kryminalny całkowicie pozbawiony suspensu - w zasadzie można powiedzieć że nie istnieje, a więc kompletnie nie rozumiem, czym jest ta książka i jaki jest jej cel. Jedyna wartość to niewielki wgląd w codzienne życie Angoli.

Just because I had been given the book as a present a couple of years ago, I read Pepetela's second Jaime Bunda book before I read this one. When it comes to movies, there's a good chance the sequel is not as good as the original. I'm not sure if that is a "rule" we can apply to books but this would be an exception to the rule. Being a good book with an engaging story, I felt Pepetela refined his characters and the language he uses from the first book to the second.
I think most people won't be disappointed when reading Jaime Bunda, Agente Secreto. But I think they'll enjoy more Jaime Bunda e a Morte do Americano.

… até me chegou a ser penosa a leitura da quarta e última parte deste livro muito muito fraco. Provavelmente, todos os bons escritores escreveram um mau livro (Graham Greene não escreveu “O Nosso Agente em Havana”?…). Este “Jaime Bunda” está para Pepetela como o mencionado para Graham Greene: o que pretende ser uma sátira não passa de uma looooonga e muito chata anedota com pouca Graça ou mesmo sem graça alguma. Salvam-se algumas “interpelações” do Autor ao Primeiro Narrador e, vá lá, o texto do Segundo Narrador (afinal, Narradora…). Glossário insuficiente e muito muito limitado o que fere com alguma gravidade passagens significativas do texto original.

Apesar da escassez de informações, Bunda não de inibe e inicia a sua investigação com muito afinco. É no decorrer das averiguações que um outro crime "se lhe atravessa à frente" e que poderá ser este que o tirará do lugar de estagiário.
Este livro, apesar de cheio de humor, não correspondeu às minhas expectativas iniciais e achei que a história demorou muito tempo a resolver-se.

Livro giro, um sátira à sociedade angolana bem construída. No entanto, acaba por se tornar longo demais e algumas partes do mesmo são chatas e não acrescentam nada a história. Uma leitura gira para quem mora em Angola, uma vez que é um retrato (ainda actual) que critica, de forma engraçada, os principais problemas da sociedade.

Uma divertidíssima sátira, com momentos que provocam gargalhadas de ir às lágrimas. Pepetela brinca com a literatura policial, escolhendo um desajeitado agente secreto, Jaime Bunda, para a função. À medida que a narrativa avança, percebemos que há outra dimensão, ainda mais importante, também satírica: um retrato irónico, frio como láminas, do regime angolano.

Zupełnie dla mnie nieśmieszne (ale zależy od gustu) i bardzo seksistowskie. bohaterami są mężczyźni, a zgwałcona kobieta jest opisywana w sposób bardzo seksualny i przedmiotowy. Ci ho messo una vita per finirlo. MI spiace dirlo ma i gialli africani non fanno proprio per me. Jaime va a fare compagnia a Preciuos nel dimenticatoio. Troppo lento, troppa poca azione, prolissità a non finire.
