Swami Sivananda Radha, born Sylvia Hellman was a German yogini who emigrated to Canada and founded Yasodhara Ashram in British Columbia. She established a Western-based lineage in the Sivananda tradition and published books on several branches of Yoga.
It's a very straightforward book on the practice of mantra yoga. I learned that there is a difference between chanting and "just saying" the mantra. In this book, chanting involves a bit of ritual and the singing of the mantra in a very specific melody. When one just repeats the mantra over and over, it is considered japa, which is also a practice unto itself. I've been doing japa and I'm now interested in actually doing some chanting.
Here's a tip: the author provides sheet music so that one may sing the mantra in its appropriate melody. If you don't have access to a piano or can't read sheet music, go to noteflight.com and sign up for a free account. There, you can copy the sheet music onto the program and it will play the melody for you.
Enjoyed this relatively short (120p) book, which contained minimal "fluff", and focused on the practice of mantra & japa yoga. The author clearly explains (through her tradition and experience) the topic, key practice points, and the ins/outs of mantra work, along with the role of the teacher, student, practitioner etc. Anyone reading this would be able to walk away with some pointers on the topic from a practitioner who seems to have done the hard yards via mantra work. It's applicable for practitioners of any spiritual tradition that makes use of mantra/sound/phrase yoga and contemplation.
Book explaining about importance, powers and methods of reciting mantras in simple motivational way.
