Ann Rinaldi (b. August 27, 1934, in New York City) is a young adult fiction author. She is best known for her historical fiction, including In My Father's House, The Last Silk Dress, An Acquaintance with Darkness, A Break with Charity, and Hang a Thousand Trees with Ribbons. She has written a total of forty novels, eight of which were listed as notable by the ALA. In 2000, Wolf by the Ears was listed as one the best novels of the preceding twenty-five years, and later of the last one hundred years. She is the most prolific writer for the Great Episode series, a series of historical fiction novels set during the American Colonial era. She also writes for the Dear America series.

Rinaldi currently lives in Somerville, New Jersey, with her husband, Ron, whom she married in 1960. Her career, prior to being an author, was a newspaper columnist. She continued the column, called The Trentonian, through much of her writing career. Her first published novel, Term Paper, was written in 1979. Prior to this, she wrote four unpublished books, which she has called "terrible." She became a grandmother in 1991.

Rinaldi says she got her love of history from her eldest son, who brought her to reenactments. She says that she writes young adult books "because I like to write them."

I read this book at 14 when I worked at the library in the children's dept. - I was putting it on the shelf and it looked interesting, so I checked it out. This was the author's debut book and I remember writing to her as a teenager to tell her I liked her book. I still have her handwritten reply.

I read this as a kid, and really liked it then, I guess because I connected to the main character? But when I read it again recently I was shocked by the glaringly obvious emotionally abusive tactics (and sometimes physically abusive) used by Nikki's brothers and sister-in-law, who are presented as the 'good' adults.

I love Ann Rinaldi's books, and seeing as this was her debut novel and I had heard that it was good, I was eager to read it.
I hadn't expected anything historical, and I didn't get it, but that was fine. A modern book with made up characters is interesting too. I really enjoyed the relationships Nicki had with her brothers, the absorbing plot and sound writing, but I did have a problem with the plethora of swear words that graced almost every page.
One other thing that didn't make much sense, was that, from what you learned on the back of the book, the book was about how a girl thought she had killed her father and then realized that perhaps it hadn't been her fault.
Though the book dealt with this, it wasn't the focus of the plot. I'm not sure what the focus was, exactly, but it most definitely wasn't what you were told.
Other than that, this is a good book.

This is one of my favorite books from high school. I checked out of the library on a regular basis for 4 years. An awesome story about a girl named Nikki who is raised by her much older brother despite their dad being in the picture. A powerful story about family. The sequel, Prosises are for Keeping is a must read also. I found a crappy copy of this on Amazon and I had to pay $75 dollars for it but I didn't mind. I had to have it. I also bought the sequel from them too and it ended up being an old library book. So if even though this book is out of print and hard to find, I would recommend that you look for it at your local library. An awesome read.

What a change from the historical fiction she's famous for. I finally took the plunge after passing it on the shelf for years, and it turned into a really good, solid story about family. I think it's probably my favorite of all her books - but that might just be because I'm enchanted by the 1970s setting.

I read this book in high school and absolutely loved it. I’d love to try again as an adult if I can find a copy.
