The major arc of this book is a discussion of the what can be gained by considering the "primal" mindset as well as the "civilized" mindset prevalent in the majority of the world's population.

In this book, I saw great lessons in the primal power of story telling and of the vital contentedness between nature and man. Each of the 6 chapters could exist as a stand alone essay, and Horn still ties them together nicely so that each builds on the previous by incorporating his personal experiences and reflections as he has grown with his family.
