This is a quick little read that provides an easy-to-digest overview of peak oil, the alternatives, and why most of the alternatives won't work unless our population falls to 1900 or 1950's levels. Depressing, maybe - but the best way to solve the problem is to arm people with the facts.
Ok wait, I take that last line back - according to Change or Die, arming people with the facts will not make them change. Forming a strong community WILL foster change, so every responsible community leader should read Plan C: Community Survival Strategies for Peak Oil and Climate Change.
