A good overview of a seminal 20th/21st-century technology icon that is included on our middle school syllabus. Students learned how Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak pioneered and revolutionized the personal computer industry in the late 1970s. Jobs was adopted in 1955 by a San Francisco family who subsequently moved to Mountain View, California. Having never finished college, Jobs and Wozniak developed a new kind of computer, Apple II, which modern looks were modeled after a "plastic case from a food processor." Jobs was subsequently pushed out of Apple and began a new journey into NeXT and Pixar. Later, Jobs was asked to return to help resurrect the faltering Apple Corporation, and, what he accomplished is legendary. As an innovative entrepreneur, he introduced the colorful iMac in 1998. With the introduction of the iPod in 2001, the music industry was forever changed. Perhaps his greatest accomplishment was the introduction of the iPhone smartphone and iPad with their unique applications. This short biography was an excellent primer, however, it only whets my appetite to read Walter Isaacson's in-depth biography of this amazing technical wizard.
Concise, inspirational, informative – a good book for young children to learn about Steve Jobs. This book provides a brief overview of Steve Jobs life and achievements without going too much in detail. It provides a glimpse into his personality, the visionary that he was, his value for perfection and simplicity, and the inspiration he continues to be even after his death. NeXT, PIXAR, and APPLE itself are all included as part of his professional journey in the book. Nick Hunter lists Jobs’ successes and failures as well as his strengths and weaknesses. Snippets of interesting facts as well as quotes are highlighted in different colored boxes making the book visually pleasing along with the many photos included (many of which are Jobs’). Examples of the facts/quotes from the book: “The bite was added so people would know it was an apple and not a tomato.” ‘“Do you want to sell sugar water all your life or do you want to change the world?” Jobs tries to persuade Pepsi’s John Sculley to join Apple’ It includes a ‘Glossary’ of words used in the book for the young reader (though I am sure most young readers nowadays are born knowing many of these words!), a helpful list of more books to read and websites to explore, and a section for the young entrepreneur with Steve Jobs’ ideas on how to be one. Rating: B – the book by itself is great for kids to introduce Steve Jobs and presented well. Reading Level: Ages 9 to 11 Disclaimer:Thank you to NetGalley for sending me a digital review copy. I was not compensated for my review. My thoughts on this book were in no way influenced by the author or publicist. They are my personal opinions formed when I read this book.
This title is one from the "Titans of Business" series. I found it to be an interesting, fact-filled look at the eminently savvy, perfection driven entrepreneur, who was the co-founder of one of the United States' most successful and admired companies, The Apple Corporation. Young readers who have been born into the technological age, along with older generations who are still struggling to tread the waters of technology, will enjoy reading and learning about Steve Jobs and his Apple Computer's beginnings. From developing computers, iMacs, iPods, IPhones, to creating Pixar computer animation studios which has produced many successful animated films, Steve Jobs was truly a gifted business leader. Youngsters searching for an interesting person to research will find Steve Jobs a most fascinating study.
This brief biography offers information on the man who changed the way we communicate and obtain our information, Steve Jobs. There is only a tiny bit of information about his formative years with most of the book following his partnership with Steve Wozniak and his involvement with Apple and its many products. Anyone looking to start a business might find useful information here while also being reminded of the magnetic personality of Jobs. There are only hints of the less savory aspects of his personality or his personal life, but this book might be a good place for middle graders to start in learning more about the man behind all the nifty machines.
A topical biography for 11-14 year olds that is interesting and quite balanced and objective. It explores all areas of his life including dropping out of college and his business failures, his interest in Buddhism, his sometimes difficult to work with style, his creativity and inventiveness and how he has affected the way we live. Overall it is informative and bound to inspire young inventor-entrepreneurs. www.GoodReadingGuide.com
In depth description of the life of Steve Jobs up until his death in 2011. Topics discussed included his early life, how he became interested in electronics, how he started Apple and developed his empire, and his death. The book is a good account of his life and would be excellent for a biography project.
