The Littlest Yak #2

The Littlest Yak and the New Arrival

Rate this book
Gertie is going to be a big sister! But is there room in Mama's heart for the little yak—and an even littler new arrival?

Gertie the littlest yak is getting ready to welcome a new arrival to the family, and that means big sister planning and big sister sharing. She can’t wait to share all her favorite things — like her curly-wool comb for important back-scratching, or her pinecones for playing yak throwing and catching — because the newest yakling will have so much to learn!

But how does Gertie feel about sharing Mommy? Is there enough room in Mommy's heart to love both Gertie AND the new arrival?

This adorably warm and reassuring story from the award-winning creators of The Littlest Yak shows readers that there will always be room for families, and hearts, to grow.

I’m supposed to be writing something about myself for the author page on my new website but, to be honest, I spend most of my time being hugely surprised that I’m now a published writer (so you can imagine my reaction when I come across one of my books in a bookshop!). How I’ve managed to create and publish picture books when I can barely use the remote control is a constant source of wonder to both me and my family but… here I am!

I’ve come to the conclusion that the ‘about me’ bit should be big on shortness and short on boring-ness so I’m just going to tell you five things about me that no one knows (Shhh! They’re a secret!) and leave it at that…

1: I secretly think I could be Indiana Jones – I even have the hat…

2: I do, on occasion, eat cake for breakfast.

3: I’m not very good at telling the time, even ‘though I’m a grown up.

4: I talk to Gertie, The Littlest Yak, all the time (when I get stuck on something, I ask her what she thinks I should do….)

5: I practice interview questions when I’m driving in the car so that I don’t accidentally let it slip that I eat cake for breakfast or talk to a yak…

In a Nutshell: So cute! Loved everything about this little gem. A great book for soon-to-be elder siblings.

Story Synopsis:
Gertie, the little Yak, is going to be replaced as the littlest yak of her community. She is quite excited at the thought of having a “brand new” baby sister and begins dreaming of the things they’ll do together. But soon, her thoughts raise a doubt – Will Mummy have enough space in her heart for both of her little yaks? Gertie does her best to estimate the size of Mummy’s heart, but her calculations leave her even more worried. To soothe her worry wobbles, she goes in search of the only person who can relieve her anxiety – Mummy. Will Mummy be able to soothe away Gertie’s fears?

This picture book was the perfect package for me. It had everything I love in this genre, and it also had one thing I strongly dislike but that still delighted me in this instance – rhythmic text.

Here are all the things I relished about this read:
❃ The star of the show is undoubtedly little Gertie, soon to be not the littlest. I adored her personality, right from her enjoyment of books to her colourful welcome banner for her sibling to her love for her Mummy. Gertie is one of the sweetest characters I have read in picture books.

❃ The build-up of the story covers all the emotions generated at the news of a younger sibling, beginning from excitement and joy and moving on to fear and worry. I loved how both the sides of the emotional scale were balanced out, rather than focussing only on the apprehensions.

❃ There are many witty scenes, courtesy Gertie’s overenthusiastic preparation for her new sibling.

❃ I liked the other characters as well. Mummy is exactly as Mummies should be – sensible and loving and understanding. Granny Hilda, who rocks her curls btw, is also amazing in her caring encouragement of Gertie’s plans.

❃ I appreciate how Mummy Yak calmed little Gertie’s worries by explaining how hearts work when families grow. Her answer was something the target age group will easily understand due to its simplicity.

❃ I am not at all a fan of rhythmic prose in children’s picture books as many a time, authors force in words just to make a rhyme work. In this book though, for the first time ever, I could see the beauty of the rhymes from the first page itself. Every single verse is perfect in its meter and tone. Moreover, the verses actually feel like verses, with an intelligent use of figures of speech such as alliteration and onomatopoeia to enhance the poetic feel. *chef’s kiss!*

❃ The illustrations are equally adorable. I loved not just the yaks with their knitted hats and poncho-style blankets, but also the background detailing on every page, including Gertie’s two little animal companions keeping an eye out for her, and the snowy forest that somehow never feels cold or lonely. One page shows Gertie keeping some of her books aside for the new baby. Don’t forget to read the titles of her books; they are hilarious! It’s amazing how much of an effort the illustrator put into making even the tiny details memorable.

In short, every aspect of this book – story, rhymes, illustrations, and message –gets full marks from me.

The book is officially intended for ages 4-8, and based on its vocabulary and content, it ought to work nicely for this age range. It might also work for slightly younger kids who are soon to be elder siblings, but a couple of the words could be a tad difficult for them to grasp.

This is a follow-up to the bestselling book, ‘The Littlest Yak’, which I had no idea about prior to reading this. I am going to remedy this lacuna and get my hands on the first book to know more about little Gertie and how her story began.

Recommended with this Mummy’s entire heart!

5 huge stars.

My thanks to Penguin Random House, Peachtree, and Edelweiss+ for the DRC of “The Littlest Yak and the New Arrival”. This review is voluntary and contains my honest opinion about the book.

This was a find from the new books being processed at our library. I instantly fell in love with the cover. The dedication reads: "For the real Granny Hilda, whose heart was endless, and for wonderful Grannies everywhere."

My favorite line: "she dreamed woolly dreams of sweet yaklings all night."

The illustrations are sublime. I loved the yaks and the overall color scheme. The combination of writing and illustrations works wonderfully well.

The Littlest Yak: The New Arrival is a sheer delight. Although a follow on from the wonderful The Littlest Yak you could absolutely read this as a stand alone. However, I urge you to read The Littlest Yak as it's brilliant and one of mine and my daughter's favourite books. The superb duo that is Lu Fraser and Kate Hindley have done it again with another spectacular picture book full of warmth and brimming with love.

Gertie, the littlest yak of the herd is thrilled to hear she is going to be a big sister. She knows just what to do to be the perfect big sister. Gran helps Gertie realise that she'll need to be good at sharing so Gertie begins to gather together the things she can share. It' not long before she realises something or more importantly someone that she will need to share - Mummy! Will Mummy have enough love for both Gertie and the new arrival?

A lovely story to share with all children but the ideal book to gift to a child who's expecting to be a big brother or sister to help them bring up and discuss any of their fears they have and alleviate worries that a new sibling brings.

There's a lyrical lightness and magic to Lu's writing. Her style makes it a dreamy read aloud with its gentle patter of words on your tongue. There's a juxtaposed aspect to the book where the illustrations from Kate are cool and ice-filled yet Lu's story is cast in warm affection with words of love. Together they work in complete harmony to bring you a story you will be asked to read over and over by your little ones.

There's several spreads in the book that we particularly loved. When Gertie is getting creative with paints and knitting needles. We love the palette of the book with the cool blues and pops of red but this spread has a little rainbow sprinkling of colours. As book lovers we also adored the page with the stack of books to help little yaks with big thinking! Exploring the different titles of the books was lots of fun. I think Kate had lots of fub when constructing this spread. Gertie continues to be super cute and yakling is just as delightful.

Thanks to Simon and Schuster and Netgalley for sharing an eARC with us.

A new baby is on the way and the littlest yak is happy to be a big sister but sharing is something that starts to seem fun until Gertie realises that means sharing mum too.

Lu Fraser’s lovely rhyming story is a wonderful way to help a child cope with a new sibling and how it’s okay to feel unsure about where you fit in when the family increases. The tremendous illustrations by Kate Hindley just filled me full of glee, the snazzy headgear on the yaks and the yak based book titles are perfect examples of what makes this so special. So many delightful touches that make this series stand out, I hope they continue to work together on more tales of Gertie and her herd.

I thought the littlest yak was adorable until I saw the dinkier one! It’s a cuteness overload.

I received an early copy from the publishers via NetGalley in exchange for a review.

Thoroughly endearing, this shows a mummy yak and a baby yak, happily together, until (with no sign of daddy yak, but we’ll let that pass) the bomb drops that there’ll be a new baby yak. The child demands of itself it’ll be the best big sister yak imaginable, but then worries how the mother could possibly love her when there’s junior to look out for and love instead. A simple, and commonly dealt-with, quandary comes with charming characterisation, and a pretty proficient verse narrative. I must be feeling generous for the number of five stars I’m handing out this afternoon, but I can’t really see why this doesn’t deserve them, as it’s really quite delightful and shows the issue behind its very existence very nicely indeed.

Gertie is the littlest yak ... for now! She is going to be a big sister which is super exciting, or it is until the doubts begin to creep in. After all she's never had to share her Mummy before.

This is such a lovely book. Gertie is as cute as ever but facing a big change. If you have a little one who is about to become a big brother or sister this is a great way to begin talking about what they can do and what might be different or difficult when the baby arrives.

I was able to read an advanced copy of this book thanks to NetGalley and the publishers but the opinions expressed are my own. This is a lovely gentle way to show your little one that while some things will change with a new baby others will stay the same. Recommended.

This is an adorable book continuing the story of the littlest yak,Gertie, who this time discovers that a little sibling is due to arrive…but after the initial excitement a question is raised - will mum Yak have enough love for two little yaks. Told in beautiful rhymes with wonderful illustrations this is a delight from start to finish . A book for young readers and will be highly recommended for EYFS classes and KS 1

Oh, this is such a sweet, heartwarming, loving, adorable, and cutest book ever! The little yak, Gertie, is back again. This time, she is ready to become the big sister and welcome the mini-est yak to the family. However hard, she is even willing to share mummy yak with the new arrival. But… does mummy yak have enough space in her heart for both?

As guessed from the premise, the book deals with preparing the older child to welcome the newest and youngest member into the family. Uncertainties, vulnerability, doubts, etc., are common since the baby in the house has to become an adult to let someone else be the baby. The book shows these concerns through Gertie while addressing them through her mother and the entire yak community.

The answer is presented in simple terms that a child would understand with ease and become more aware of their actions and emotions. This would be a great book for families planning and expecting a second child. It’s important to communicate with the first child and ensure that they feel just as loved as before.

The illustrations are marvelous. Right from the color scheme to Granny Hilda’s curls and Gertie’s little birdie, the pages transport the readers to the snowy mountains. And I have to mention the titles of books in Gertie’s collection. Cheeky!

The writing style is simple and suitable for the target audience (I think so). There aren’t more than a handful of words per page. But they do the job effectively. I’d love to read more books with Gertie, the littlest yak.

Thank you, Edelweiss+ and Peachtree, for the eARC. This review is voluntary and contains my honest opinion about the book.

A second book about Gertie, the littlest yak is a colorful addition to the picture book shelves at my library. Gertie has learned that she will not be the littles yak much longer. She is about to be a big sister. Granny Hilda comes to stay with Gertie while Mummy is away and teaches Gertie some big sister lessons. Not Gertie is worried. Will Mummy's heart be big enough for the new yakling and Gertie? Don't worry, Gertie. A new baby means one more heart to love you and Mummy's heart will grow to hold both her favorite yaklings. Love the cheerful and colorful illustrations and the whimsical details. Gertie's books include "The Snow and the Furry," "Gert Expectations," "Bleet House," and "Snowby Dick."

Our Review...

In the first book in this series, we met Gertie – the littlest yak in the pack. She was struggling finding her place in the herd, until she learnt the power of being small and being different.

In The New Arrival Gertie finds out that she is going to become a big sister – no longer being the littlest yak.

The book follows Gertie as she prepares for the new yakling, exploring her excitement and worries along the way. The illustrations are beautifully drawn, with gorgeous shades of blue used throughout the book.

A wonderful present for any child expecting a new member in their family!

A lovely story featuring Gertie as she prepares for the arrival of a new yakling. I can offer incredibly positive reviews for this book both from myself and from the two year old big sister I gifted it to and her Mum. The illustrations are gorgeous, message is heartwarming and language makes it a delight to read aloud.

I read the third book second and that's when I realized that Gertie had a sibling and that the "new arrival" was probably book number two. Either way, how can you not be entertained by the littlest yak series? In this one, our little friend has a new sibling to welcome and share more love with mom and the herd even though it's a scary idea.

In the sequel to the adorable “The Littlest Yak”, we learn she may no longer be the littlest yak. But if she’s not, will her mother love her as much? Very sweet book for little ones who are becoming the bigger sister or brother.

This absolutely darling book is about a little yak who is going to be a big sister soon. At first this is exciting news, but then she starts contemplating what it means to share mommy. An utterly relatable and warm hearted story set in a cold, icy world of adorably illustrated animals.
