OHKUBO Atsushi

Atsushi Ōkubo ( 大久保篤), also romanized as Atsushi Ohkubo, is a Japanese manga author and fantasy artist known for his work on the manga series Soul Eater, which has been adapted into an anime. Okubo worked as an assistant under Rando Ayamine, on the manga series Get Backers. He also created artwork for various cards for the Lord of Vermillion game.

Atsushi Ōkubo was not a model student and was more attracted to drawing than to learning. At the age of 20, after finishing studies at a manga school where he met Rando Ayamine, the author of Get Backers, he became Rando Ayamine's assistant for two years. Finally, he won a competition at Square Enix's Gangan magazine with his first manga series B.Ichi and it was published for four volumes. After the end of his last manga, he created Soul Eater, still for Square Enix's Gangan magazine, which brought him worldwide success.

Story quality really is starting to slip here.

Vol 19 is the conclusion of the fight in the Neithers. There is some big mcguffin to be solved but our heroes will win(?). The characters spend a surprising amount of time arguing and planning with just seconds to spare it was kind of annoying.

Vol 20 is a training montage of the boys and Tamaki leveling up their power (though of course Tamaki does not use that upgrade in the next fight - like the writer forgot about it).

Vol 21 is betrayal!! Special Fire Force 8 is betrayed by the Empire (and the Fire Force) and go on the run. The team joins with Joker and attacks a prison to free Captain Obi before he can be turned into an infernal. The white clads just kind of stand around fighting one at a time verses Squad 8 like they did not learn from the mistakes of previous fights. So far not really interesting and outcome not really in doubt as they take out one bad guy after another until the last page.

Wow. This is when it got wild and serious with the past coming in and knowledge gaps starting to be filled.
