Tout simplement à cause de sa tignasse flamboyante et de ses taches de rousseur. Poil de Carotte n'a peur de rien, ce qui ne l'empêche pas de trembler dans le noir en entendant la voix de sa mère, sa mère qui le punit toujours injustement et lui préfère son grand frère Félix et sa sœur Ernestine. Et pourtant Poil de Carotte ne manque pas de tendresse mais, ne sachant pas l'exprimer, il se montre souvent maladroit et sot...

Pierre-Jules Renard or Jules Renard (February 22, 1864- May 22, 1910) was a French author and member of the Académie Goncourt, most famous for the works Poil de Carotte (Carrot hair) (1894) and Les Histoires Naturelles (Natural Histories) (1896). Among his other works are Le Plaisir de rompre (The Pleasure of Breaking) (1898) and Huit jours à la campagne (Eight Days in the Countryside) (1906).

Poil de Carotte ("Carrot Top"), the young hero of this book, reminds me of my son Jonathan. Jonathan is autistic spectrum and thinks a lot about the past, which he remembers in minute, Proustian detail. He dwells almost exclusively on unpleasant episodes, known generically to his family as "Bad Things That Happened A Long Time Ago". Thinking about the Bad Things can sometimes make Jonathan angry. I have often suggested to him that he should write down some of the Bad Things; it seems to me that this might, in another phrase he likes, Help Him Overcome His Anger. But Jonathan categorically refuses.

Jules Renard appears to have written down all his Bad Things: the book is a collection of little anecdotes, typically a page or two long, written in an elegantly simple late 19th century French. Many of them are quite horrifying. I think the one I was most shocked by was the following. Poil de Carotte, who lives out in the country, likes fishing for crayfish. Someone has told him that nothing beats cat innards as bait. The crayfish can't resist it. Poil de Carotte has a little hut in the garden where he likes to hang out. He takes a saucer of milk and a gun, and persuades an old cat to come into the hut with him.

The cat laps up the milk hungrily. Poil de Carotte feels sorry for it. "It's okay," he says, "I've changed my mind. You can go." But his hands have other ideas, and as he finishes his little speech they point the gun at the cat's head and pull the trigger. There is a deafening explosion. When he can see again, half the cat's head is missing, but it's still alive. It's jerking around feebly and looking at him out of its one remaining eye. Poil de Carotte knows he has to put it out of its misery. He clubs it with the rifle butt, kicks it, punches it, but the damn thing just won't die. Finally, he decides to strangle it. He grabs hold of its throat and squeezes as hard as he can. Somewhere in the middle of all this, he faints. His parents find him, pry his hands loose from the cat's throat, and carry him into the house. He has feverish nightmares about giant crayfish.

I wonder if writing down all these Bad Things helped the author overcome his anger? It's difficult to tell; I'm not sure, but I'm tempted to conclude that he was, if anything, even angrier when he'd finished. Maybe Jonathan's right. But it's interesting that someone tried the experiment.

This was a tough, tough book. I understand that it's a classic of French literature, but I could hardly get through this book on unrelenting child abuse. In the book "1001 Children's Books You Should Read..." it is listed in the section for much younger children, perhaps because of the age of the protagonist, but I would have to argue in favor of young adults upward because of the subject material.

Sulla rete, in un Blog, ho trovato il racconto di una mamma che vuole leggere "Pel di carota" - il famoso libro di Jules Renard - ai suoi due bimbi. Pel di carota è il libro per bambini meno libro per bambini che esista, nessuno si spiega come sia diventato un libro per bambini. Forse perché nessuno lo ha mai letto. O forse perché i bambini sanno stare allo scherzo. Sia come sia: lo prende in prestito dalla biblioteca, lo sfoglia, si mette a leggere ad alta voce davanti ai suoi due bambini e già alla seconda pagina tentenna.

Pel di carota assiste all'uccisione delle pernici. Sua madre, la signora Lepic, lo avvicina e lo coinvolge. Si deve rendere utile. Pel di carota vorrebbe scrivere sulla lavagna quante pernici saranno uccise, ma per sua madre la lavagna è troppo alta e lui non ci arriva. Quindi Pel di carota propone di spennarle le pernici, ma per sua madre è un lavoro da signorine. Ecco che sua madre gli sta dicendo che deve ucciderle lui le pernici, e non faccia la signorinella. A due a due strozzandole. E mentre le prende e le sta strozzando con le mani, davanti a sua madre, sua sorella e suo padre, La signora Lepic esclama: La verità è che si sta raffinando!

Pel di carota bagna il letto con la pipì, sua madre gli affonda il viso sulle lenzuola bagnate.
Pel di carota russa di notte, sua madre lo sveglia con dei pizzicotti sulle natiche, bucandolo con le unghie che gli fanno uscire il sangue.

Pel di carota vuole mangiare del formaggio, sua madre lo divide con gli altri e quando è il turno di Pel di carota non ne resta niente. Lo consola dicendogli, "Tanto il formaggio non piace neppure a me!".

Pel di carota cerca di uccidere una talpa ma non ci riesce. La talpa sbatte e rimbalza su una pietra. Sangue dappertutto. Questa scena è una delle più atroci. Che non ve la dico.

Pel di carota è il bimbo più vessato al mondo da sua madre. Si sente vicino solo a suo padre che si sente vicino a Pel di carota essendo anche lui vessato da sua moglie.

Pel di carota pensa, Nessuno mi vuole bene a me!


Alcuni sostengono che dovrebbero essere i bambini a leggerlo alle mamme. Chi dice che i bambini invece si divertono con Pel di carota, sanno distinguere il racconto di fantasia dalla realtà. Jules Renard scriveva, nel suo immortale Diario:

"Noi siamo tutti dei poveri imbecilli (parlo per me, beninteso) incapaci di essere buoni o cattivi per due ore intere di seguito".

Très surprenant. Pensais retrouver l'esprit des contes de Perrault. Au contraire, l'histoire est pour le moins aigre-douce et certainement pas a mettre entre les mains de tous les petits. On ne peut pas dire que ce soit une illustration de l'amour maternel. Neanmoins c'est un très beau portrait d'une famille ou la mère est sadique, le père j'm'en fouttiste, le frère opportuniste, la soeur sans intérêt et poil de carotte, quoiqu'attachant, un peu simplet.

Si je pouvais donner 0/5 je le ferais... l'histoire est juste horrible entre l'abus que subit tous les jours Poil de Carotte et la cruauté envers les animaux... j'ai dû m'arrêter à certains moments parce que l'histoire était bien trop cru... Mme Lepic est juste une personne horrible qui n'aurais jamais dû avoir d'enfants. Poil de Carotte développe au cours de l'histoire clairement des problèmes psychologiques (entre ce qu'il fait aux animaux et les pensées suicidaires qu'il a vers la fin de l'histoire) et même s'il demande de l'aide, on l'ignore.

Disguised as a children's book, this is actually a shocking and hilarious autobiographical portrait of a young boy in provincial 19th century France enduring the indifference of his siblings and the sadistic cruelty of his mother. In one vignette, Mme Lepic feeds Carrot Top a soup made of his own excrement and invites the family to watch the spectacle. Finishing the broth without much reaction, he states, "once you get used to a thing, it ceases to be funny."

This is a book that readers either like too much, or dislike too much. A story of a young boy named Poil de Carotte who grews up with mean siblings, a cold father, and a sadistic mother who constantly mistreats him, mocks him.. The tone is neutral, sometimes kinda dull, with a touch of dark humour. The story is told in a non-chronological order, descriptions of short events that happened to him, and how it has all impacted his personality, and made him the person he later became, that is the writer himself: Jules Renard.

I find it to be one of the most amazing books I have ever read, and it is of a great value when it comes to understaning the psychology of abused children, why they tend to be too pleasing, jealous, rebellious..It's sad that the book isn't as known as it should be.

This book was a really entertaining but also a very deep book. It had multiple short stories about Carotte's child life, where everyone in his family hates him and plays tricks on him. I had a feeling as I was reading that it was a bit exaggerated because no mother would do such thing to her son. But then I thought that it was a difference of perspective of culture. I was born and grown in a asian culture where manners are highly valued and equality is valued. But this book was written in a older background, if this kind of things happened in a modern time, then it would be called as child abuse. Overall, it was a fantastic book.

فكيف سيتمكن ذلك الصغير من اختراق عتبة الطاعة و تجاوزها الى التمسك بموقفه المتمرد و الحد من تنفيذ رغبات الغير ، و هل سيتمكن حقا من الوصول لهدفه هذا في عالم يكاد الغضب و الظلم ان يكنْ معياره الوحيد …
لنتعلم من الفتى أصهب ان نصنع لذواتنا معيارا يستحيل معه ان نبقى تابعين!

Je viens de finir ce livre, et je ne sais vraiment pas quoi en penser...
La famille de Poil de Carotte est effectivement horrible, avec lui surtout, et en particulier sa mère. On sent que les bêtises qu'il fait sont faites pour attirer un peu l'attention sur lui (passage à l'internat où il casse une vitre), et que les gens le remarque pour ce qu'il est, et pas pour les choses que ça mère met en avant (et qui sont toujours négatives).
Mais en même temps je rejoins certains avis que je viens de lire, on a aussi l'impression que Poil de Carotte est un peu simplet, tendance autiste... Je n'ai pas vraiment réussi à m'attacher à ce petit garçon, auquel j'ai déjà du mal à donner un âge...

J'aime beaucoup le style d'écriture de Jules Renard, qui est plein de belles images, léger mais pas trop. Le fait que le livre soit en court chapitres le rend plus accessible et facile à lire. Je pense que de trop longs chapitres auraient été assez ennuyeux.

Définitivement pas pour les enfants.

People who loathe children's books often do so because they find the stories in them, the characters in them, insipid. Here, then, is a book for those: Poil de Carotte. Poil de Carotte as well as the family of Poil de Carotte are the real thing, fussy, feuding, calling names, having favorites, being lazy, forcing others to do one's work, full of greed and cruelty and meanness. No sweet, sappy story here. And, astonishingly, first published in 1893. Refreshingly bleak, but not recommended for those in search of the happy stories of yesteryear. Or, really, children.

Je ne m'attendais pas à une série de petits épisodes comme c'est le cas, mais plutôt à une histoire avec un début et une fin: cet aspect m'a déjà déçue. J'ai trouvé ces petits épisodes ennuyeux à périr, sans intérêt, et déprimants: quoi qu'il fasse, ce pauvre Poil de Carotte, qu'on n'appelle même pas par son vrai prénom, est dénigré par sa propre famille! Je ne vois vraiment pas ce qu'on peut retirer de ce livre, sinon de l'ennui et un sentiment d'injustice.

Souvent synonyme d'ennui, quand je me souviens du temps que j'ai du passer à le lire pour rattraper mes camarades de classe en été... Curieusement je n'ai jamais pu l'aimer, mais c'était l'une de mes premières longues lectures ...

Charming childlike story. Not a story for children, rather told from a child's point of view to show his simplicity and innocence and to give the author opportunities for irony and humor and insight into human nature. The tone reminds me of Letrtres de Mon Moulin by Daudet.

If ordering online, be careful to make sure you get it in the language you want. Poil de Carotte (redhead) is the title in both the French and the English editions. The English translation by Ralph Manheim is excellent.

Lu dans le cadre d'un défi (livre le plus vieux de ma pile, il a appartenu fut un temps à ma soeur de 16 ans mon aînée donc ça devrait le faire ^^) et franchement si ce n'était pour cette occasion je l'aurai abandonné.
Certes, il s'agit d'un classique mais d'une ce n'est absolument pas pour moi une lecture pour enfants, certaines scènes peuvent heurter la sensibilité (la mienne a gravement été heurtée, je n'ai d'ailleurs que parcouru les chapitres avec des tortures totalement gratuites d'animaux, car rien, même la maltraitance qu'il subit ne justifie le comportement du héros vis à vis de ces pauvres bêtes !) Voilà c'était ma partie WWF ! Maintenant sorti de cela, j'ai trouvé le personnage de Poil de carotte très intéressant, absolument ambivalent voire contradictoire, je ne m'y suis pas attachée du tout par contre. J'étais spectatrice de cette histoire sans y prendre part. Ce que j'ai apprécié c'est le format par petites touches avec des chapitres très courts mêlant parfois comme des dialogues de théâtre. Aucun personnage ne mérite qu'on s'y attache, il ne fait pas bon vivre dans cette famille ni dans ce village où les gens se repaissent du malheur d'autrui, où tout est faux-semblant, cruauté et méchanceté gratuite.
Bref, j'ai aimé la forme mais pas le fond. Je pourrai dire ça c'est fait je l'ai lu. A chacun de se faire sa propre opinion sur ce classique. Juste ne donnez pas sans à vos gosses sans les accompagner pour en parler derrière !

Intéressant de voir comment les gens vivaient avant l’année 1900 est ce qui était normal ... mais quand même un livre un peu trop jeune pour moi - j’ai trouvé (quelques fois) les histoires plus frustrantes pour le pauvre poil de carote qu’amusantes... En fait j’avais donné 3 étoiles pour ce livre et c’est seulement après avoir lu les commentaires de Michel à la fin du livre que j’ai compris tous les niveaux de ce livre et ça a vraiment changé mon opinion sur ce livre... il y avait un paquet de choses qui m’avaient passé bien au dessus de la tête... après avoir lu les commentaires je vois ce livre sur on tout autre jour et je vais même le relire... j’ai monté mon niveau d’apprécIation à 4 étoiles et je lui donnerais même 4,5 étoiles si je le pouvais... étonnant à quel point l’explication de quelqu’un d’autre me donne un tout nouveau regard sur ce livre dont j’avais manqué plusieurs dimensions!!!!

رواية ممتعة رغم ما يقال عنها أنها كتبت للناشئة الا أنني أنصح الاباء بقرأتها فهي مفيدة في تربية الابناء فهي على اقل تقدير تعطي الاباء تصور عن كيفية تفكير الابناء ، ففي هذه الرواية والتي كتبت بطريقة جميلة وهي المقاطع القصيرة يتحدث الكاتب عن طفولته حيث عانى كثيراً من الظلم أبتداء من شكله فهو أصهب " شعره أصفر وليس أشقر " وهذه بحد ذاتها جعلت من أهله يطلقون عليه هذا اللقب وينادونه به ، هذا بالاضافة الى أنه كان دائماً الضحية أو كبش الفداء يعاني من ظلم أقرب المقربين اليه وبالذات من أمه رغم حبه لهم ، يتورط في المشاكل بدون قصد ويعاقب رغم ان الاخرون قد يتورطون معه ولكن لا يعاقبون بل يلتمس لهم العذر ، يحاول أن يقول لا أن يعترض ولكن هل يتمكن ؟ أدعوا الاباء لقرأة هذه الرواية فهي رائعة بحق وممتعة

هذه حكاية الفتى أصهب آخر العنقود في عائلة السيد لوبيك.
ومع ذلك أصهب فتى مضطهد من جميع أفراد العائلة؛ وهو يشعر بالكراهية تجاه جميع أفراد عائلته تقريبا_عدا أبيه_وتحديدا يكره أصهب والدته القاسية.

وبحسب سياق الرواية لدى أصهب أسباب وجيهة لهذه المشاعر.

ن أقيم الرواية بنجوم لأني لا أفهم سر نجاحها لدى الفئة المستهدفة. ينتظر ولدي قراءتي لهذه القصة بنفاد صبر وأنا أقرأها ويدي على قلبي!
تعزز الرواية مخاوف يتعرض لها الأطفال من قبيل: أن الوالدين لا يحبان أطفالهما، الرغبة في الانتحار، التمييز بين الأطفال، الخ.

je viens de le relire une énième fois, la première était quand j'avais 10 ans et ce livre me fait toujours autant rigoler, même si la rigolade est toujours accompagnée d'un petit pincement au coeur, car la vie de Poil De Carotte n'est pas agréable, Madame Lepic s'en assure, elle aime le tourmenter et le torturer en subtilité. Bref, faites lire ce livre à vos enfants, les bêtises du petit rouquin sont intemporelles.

رواية بسيطة لكنها لم تلقى اعجابي كثيرا..حتى انني لم اكملها حتى النهاية ربما

لأنها تناسب من هم اقل مني سنا

او ربما لأن هناك الكثير من الكلمات المترجمة غير المفهومة

المترجم استخدم ترجمة حرفية سيئة...

لكن الذي اعجبني في الرواية هي شخصية اصهب وربما حتى لم تعجبني كلها ولكن لها بعض الصفات التي ذكرتني ببراءة الأطفال

لربما يكون رأيي ليس في محله ولكنه يبقى مجرد (رأي)

je l'ai lu pour l'école (la comédie en un acte pas le roman attention) et c'était… spécial ? Mais j'ai bien aimé. C'était vraiment très très rapide à lire et reflète la maltraitance tant physique que morale de Poil de carotte.

Moi qui pensait que c’était un truc un peu mignon en fait c’est TW : violence, cruauté envers les animaux, maltraitance, suicide. En gros c’est les malheurs de Sophie sauf que c’est un garçon et qu’il est roux.
