1894. The author presents his water-cure, tested for more than 35 years and published for the cure of diseases and the preservation of health. With one hundred illustrations and a portrait of the author. Translated from the German. methods of application of water; an pharmacopoeia of other treatments; a list of complaints and their treatment in alphabetical order.
Definitely did not read cover to cover but I did find the best part of this book in the Apotheca section where Kneipp says Fuck Big Pharma;
“Among all the things I abhor and hate, the proprietary drugs—the trading with remedies which are kept secret by their inventors—hold a prominent place.”
Fascinating reading, and quite topical, given the contemporary cold shower/wild swimming movements. I significantly benefited myself from a water treatment prescribed by an excellent and renowned naturopath some years ago,
I wanted to know more about Kneipp's work, having very much enjoyed the Kneipp trails while walking in Austria, particularly at Scheffau at the bottom of the Wilderkaiser mountains in the Tyrol, where you can walk barefoot on a variety of materials, sit in an open air lodge where fresh spring water runs down cut pine branches, and plunge your legs and arms into basins of ice-cold water - very invigorating and enlivening!
There's more to his teaching than just the water cure so I'll hope to read his ideas next on balance in all things.
