This is an artist-led picture book, which introduces young children to the vastness of the universe, how far away the moon is, what gravity is and the concept of space travel through a gentle and captivating story about an imaginative little girl. Combining full colour illustrations with NASA photographs from the surface of the moon, this beautifully illustrated picture book takes young children on an amazing journey into outer space. The story's use of rhythmic text generates an evocative and friendly tale, taking children on a magical and informative journey.
Growing up in North West England and in Germany, Anna wrote plays about talking animals, and stories about naughty children, and drew on every available surface. After school, she did an Art Foundation course, then a degree in German Literature & Philosophy at Oxford University. In 1998 she found her perfect job at Usborne in London, writing about everything from curious penguins to trips to the Moon. Usborne.com
Awesome science book that talks about trips at the outer space and moon landing and exploring. Suitable for pre schoolers. Very cute and informative illustrations.
The book starts out by a child being curious about what it would be like to be on the moon and become an astronaut. To get to the moon, you have to get on a huge rocket and sit in a small cabin. It talk about the darkness of space and how it take 4 days to even get to the moon! The story explains what the moon is like, and how children see it. The story then asks if students think they will ever make it to the moon.
The illustrations in the book are dark, and have little details that children will pick up on, like the little girls cat. It is an easy read for beginning readers, and has word usage that is just tough enough to scaffold.
On the Moon is part of the ‘Usborne First Reading’ series. Let your child’s imagination soar and let them see that the sky is most certainly not they limit as the venture into outer space and take a trip to the moon.
This simple story is full of plenty of useful information. Readers will learn how long it takes to get to the moon, what you have to wear when you’re on the moon, what is it is like to be on the moon and what souvenirs you might bring back from your trip to the moon.
On the Moon is a lovely little picture book that gives young readers an insight into what it would be like to fly to the moon. I’m sure it will raise many questions, wonderings and spark a curiosity to find out more about the moon and space.
The text is simple and clear and is easily accessible for new readers. The images are excellent - illustrations by Benji Davies are seamlessly combined with photos provided by NASA and Digital Vision.

Summary: This book goes through the process of being launched into space and getting onto the moon. Mentioning how there have been other people on the moon before. The book asks as a final statement, "When do you think you will get to go on the moon?"
Review: I feel that the book does a great job at educating children what it takes to get into space. As well as what it's actually like being up in space. I do wish however that the book would have at least given the names of the people who have been on the moon and in space in general.
Possible Uses in Class: It can be used as an introduction to the topic of space as well as educating what it takes to get into space
Genre: Picture Book/Informational (Science) Grade Level: Early Primary-Primary (K-2) Awards: Right Start Best Toy Awards 2004, Highly Commended
This is a great book to teach children about what it's like to be an astronaut. It has cute comic-like illustrations and also uses some actual photographs from NASA.
I wasn't a huge fan of the artwork in this book until I realized the landscapes of the moon are actual photos of the moon. That's kind of cool. Very simple and I think it would be easy for kids to learn more about astronauts and the moon. Not many sentences on each page so even my 15 month old enjoys it. Definitely more of an educational book than a fun read aloud book.
The illustrations in this book are ADORABLE!!! The text is simple but factual, making it a great read-aloud for storytime when you want to include a nonfiction piece. I even learned something! I didn't know it takes so long to get to the moon on a rocket. Go figure! Highly recommended.
Grades: K-2 Genre: Historical fiction I love how this book incorporates teaching little readers about the universe and how gravity works while entertaining them with the interesting pictures. This was a fast read and I would use this book in my classroom one day. Rate 5-5
My girls once asked what it would be like to go to the moon This book is perfect to explain what it is like to be an astronaut , perfect to teach our little readers about space with some amazing pictures to help them imagine how it is!
An educational Usborne book that is full of facts about the moon written in a basic, interesting way!! This is definitely a book that can be enjoyed by a 2 year old but also fascinating for a first grade level reader as well!
Kind of boring, but presents a watered down version of what it would be like to travel to the moon. For an Usbourne book, I was expecting something more engaging.
Adorable book - great introduction to the basics of space exploration for my outer space obsessed three year olds! I read it to them over Zoom and they were very engaged.
The information in the book is actually accurate and the illustrations are great! This book is great when talking about community helpers or space in earlier grades.
On the Moon is an excellent book for introducing young children to many of the difficult concepts related to the Moon and space travel. It is essentially an information book told in a very clear and simple way specifically for young children. I have used this book with a class of nursery children who were really captivated all the way through. most young children have an idea of outer space and like to talk about aliens but may not understand as clearly about concepts such as their being no air or gravity in space. This book offers a very simple way to describe these issues to children as well as how a rocket works and what astronauts do. I love reading this with young children. The conversations we had around this book were wonderful.
Did you ever wonder what it was like to travel to the moon when you were younger? If so, then this book would have answered all of your questions! In the book "On the Moon", readers can get a realistic experience of what it would be like to travel through outer space and land on the moon. The illustrations are very captivating and even include real photographs from NASA. The book tells the story directly to the reader by using "you" so that the reader can actually feel what it's truly like to travel in a rocket ship through space. This book would most certainly come in handy when starting a unit on space exploration or even to show examples of different points of view in a piece of writing.
4.25 Stars I really liked this book. I read too great books in a row. Yesterday, I read two books in a row that were just ....well...not good.
I love the illustrations, I love the imagination. I love that is gets you thinking. I love that you can teach about Moon travel with facts as well as "What if you went to the moon"
The only reason I can't give it a 5 star, is in the space ship, after launch the Astronauts aren't wearing those space suit helmets and I assume that you still need those space, fish bowl helmets in space.
this book is awesome for a 2-7 year old. as a little boy, my son placed himself right in the text. Although it is mostly in 3rd person, there are times when it says "if you go to the moon.... you need..." all of the times it said "you" made my son really think about what it would be like for him to personally go to the moon. It's a great book. I recommend the whole series by Anna Milbourne.
A great description of the moon for kids. The book covers the feelings of weightlessness, moon rovers, rockets, astronauts, darkness between here & the moon, craters, etc. in a very fun way.
This is a great book about the moon and what astronauts do. A good introduction into the topic for those little aspiring astronauts in your life. The writing is simple and as a read-out-loud, it reads like a mom would describe things to their child. Perfect. Great for ages 3-5.
