This compact monograph had begun its journey as a lecture delivered in 1982, in the memory of late Dr. Biman Behari Majumdar. Subsequently it had been revised and somewhat enlarged. As a result, it had evolved into a text with the following sections: Chapter I: The Country of Pancala and the City of Kanyakubja Chapter II: The Theory of Tripartite Struggle and the Importance of the Ayudhas Chapter III: The Gauda-Kanyakubja Struggle from the Sixth to the Eighth Century A.D Appendix I: The Problem of the Harsha Era Chapter IV: The Gurjara-Pratiharas and the Palas Chapter V: The Gahadavalas and the Palas and Senas Appendix II: The Gurjara-Pratiharas and the Rastrakutas The text is not a linear construct comprising of history of people and places. Instead it's a critical look at existing and canonical versions of events that act as hallmark of Early Medieval India. It's not very easy to read. But it acts as a solid reference for the study of this period.
