Sex, violence, murder, betrayal, revenge and a kick-ass unstoppable heroine with one big Achilles’ heel. That would be Winter. She’s been having kind of a bad week...
Firestorm 2, the plot to mine data from the infamous murder-for-hire website, has been a success. But while Winter’s been held prisoner by Alek after saving his life, GCHQ has been ordering hits to eliminate every contractor on the site – and leaked footage of Alek and Winter together means she’s now public enemy number one.
Michael is driven by a mission; haunted by the memory of Aleksey, he must find Natalya and return Aleksey’s ring to gain some closure. But his goal is hampered by a gruesome billion-pound hit which is suddenly, very publicly, on his head. Still, at least he has Aveline in his corner – unless she’s been lying to him all along.
Brilliantly narrated by the award-winning Ell Potter, the fifth instalment of the Winter series is an electrifying thriller which poses the question: when the good guys are still killers and the bad guys are in love with you, who can you trust?
Can you ever really know what lies in another person’s heart?
This was as good as all of the other previous books. Thoroughly enjoyed the series. It’s a shame that Alex appears to have abandoned Winter. Her email doesn’t work, hopefully she is OK. Doubt book six will be published.
This story has plenty of twists and turns in the plot that help to ramp up the tension. Winter finds herself in some very difficult situations, but she has a very 'can do' attitude and always believes that she will prevail. There is a good list of colourful supporting characters that make this into an enjoyable and unpredictable listen. Thankyou to TBC Audible Listeners Group for my copy, the review is entirely my own.
The beginning of this one was a disappointment. I read books one and two so many times, they are some of my favorite spy books, but I hated the prequel and then the 4th book wasn't good enough to read again but wasn't bad. Trying to get into this book was hard. It was confusing and defiantly meant to binge right after the 4th book. I had trouble piecing together what was going on. What ever happened to Simon? He's just missing, and I would have liked a reminder of why.
There was a lot of fluff in the beginning like catchphrases from the first three books said over and over. I don't know if there is a type of reader that likes hearing the same thing over and over but it is defiantly not me. "Never run" was so cool the first time I heard it, now it's just annoying.
The second part was a different story, it had the old charm of the first books, even if the sex seemed perfunctory. I loved the dynamic between Avalian and Micheal.
Alex Callister let it end! Kill your darlings! I’ve loved the Winter series but was extremely disappointed in the authors cheap attempt to drag out the series for another book when this was supposed be the conclusion. By leaving it on what feels like a very last minute shoddily executed cliff hanger. I understand you’ve found yourself a cash cow but a 5 book series is enough, you’ve already had a lot of our attention and like many series before the quality is dropping off every time as we see the spy tropes squeezed and squeezed for anymore little drops of originality.
I liked this book but unfortunately this last trick has soured the pot. You’ve probably lost a lot of your readers as they’re left unfulfilled and without closure from a series they’ve invested a lot of time in. Poor show.
Also I was very excited about having a bisexual female spy but the conclusion of this book confirms my fear. All the queer characters in the book only have ‘serious relationships’ with men and their interactions with the same sex are majority with small characters like waitresses, shop keepers and sex workers. Always submissive meek women bowing to Winter’s awesome power. It always felt very male gazey and disingenuous. This was always my worry with Winter but as a bisexual character I staved off the feelings. However, having Adeline a ‘strictly’ lesbian character fall in love with basically a teenage boy against all of her described nature just felt like the nail on the coffin of queer baiting.
Contrastingly, Ell Potter as always is the thread that holds it all together.

Another good book. I listen on Audible and the narrator is simply fantastic. I could listen to her for days. The story is good and keeps you invested, especially as it is a sequel. But of course, the book ends on another cliffhanger, leaving me impatiently waiting to hear whether another book in the series is coming or not.
Great read, for fans of thrillers and action. I just wish there were more ...
Winter Night Alex Callister Narrated by Ell Potter I absolutely love this series, and will always come back for more. High tension, excellent writing and a kick ass heroine alongside a fantastic narrator. Brilliant as always!
This is No:5 and have read & listens to Winter on previous occasions and not always in order but can be listened to as a standalone the previous stories do give incite into Winters's way of life which is always explosive. It starts quite gruesome and be aware it can be quite sexual in places but the action is there and it's non-stop. The characters are well defined and the storyline is great and of course, Eli Potter the narrator does a fantastic job.
If only I could find a way to get Winter over for dinner. Yet again, the action of this story is non-stop with Winter using her brains and brawn in her attempts to make the world a better, safer place. Across continents there is no stopping her, thank goodness, and her wit and humour add another layer to an already super tale. I hope this series will run and run - it's fabulous.
I was really looking forward to reading this 5th Winter series book and enjoyed most of the plot, at times overly repeated of characters behaviours, thoughts and disappointing ending as there doesn't appear to be anywhere else the characters can go...
