I am reviewing the audiobook and that makes a difference. I suspect I would rate the book higher. The difference is in what one can envision while listening to the narrator. Since I was once a Boy Scout I can envision quite a bit but toward the end, I realized that I really needed to see illustrations. The audiobook came with a PDF file of illustrations, but there was nothing in the audio, other than the narrative itself, that helps the listener find the appropriate illustration. It would have been helpful to hear something like, "See the illustration on page 29 of the accompanying PDF file for what a ridge and a valley looks like on a topographical map."
Note: I know someone who is a friend of the author. The relation between me and the author is so far removed though that I feel comfortable reviewing this book. I saw the author on TV and I liked him.
I doubt I will listen to this audiobook again unless it is accompanied by the full eBook or hardcopy book
Outstanding field guide. Canterbury doesn't complicate things here. He provides only pertinent details needed in the wilderness. The knot and orienteering skills are particularly solid and easy to follow.
Using the wilderness to make medicines, create fire, and thriving while surviving, if you like this you must read Dave Canterbury's book on survival, for people wanting to master survival techniques. In the book the author includes the five basic survival necessities, and different things in between like navigation, starting fires, different edible plants and how to prepare them. Along with many more key survival necessities. As you read through the book, it will you prepare for any challenge in the wild, and the confidence to survive and thrive. While reading this book I felt like I was sitting down with the author and he was teaching me face to face. I for sure loved the feeling while reading that I was in the woods surviving, hearing the leaves go crunch, crunch under my feet. A couple of the literary elements in the book are imagery and description, that being on page (54) The book states," Plantain grows close to the ground, and its most distinguishing characteristics for identification are the large veins on the back of the leaf, and also the spike that rises when the plant goes to seed." This book helps you imagine the plant so you know how to identify it. The book overall is made for the avid outdoorsmen, and it lived up to expectations and even exceeded them. I hope you enjoy the book like I did!!
