Love and Wanderlust #1

The Fling in Panama

Rate this book
A steamy and flirty standalone romantic comedy about stepping out of your comfort zone and falling in love along the way.

A backpack? Ready. A packed itinerary for Latin America? Planned. A hot sailor who wants to show me the world? Unexpected.

I arrived in Panama with a limited budget for maximum exploration. I’ve only got a few months between my parents’ home in Sydney and the corporate world, so I better make the best of it.

What I didn't plan on was meeting Eivind. He’s got broad shoulders, top-tier flirting, and a sexy accent that pulls me in. But giving into him could jeopardize my whole trip.

Ukulele ballads, long walks in the jungle, and sharing the space of a small sailboat together means the tension will be off the charts by the time we make it to the Pacific Ocean.

Eivind and his boat are sailing west, while I’m traveling south. I came here for an adventure, but now I might have an even bigger one. One hot night in Panama might change everything.

About Liz

I spent ten years traveling the world on a sailboat with my husband. He is not a secret rockstar, nor a grumpy farmer, nor a coworker I accidentally saw naked. I only see him naked intentionally.

Many of my books are based on my travels all over the world – from the Caribbean to Polynesia to Europe. I know exactly how big the world is—having sailed around it—and exactly how small it is, having bumped in to friends worldwide. I’ve been a dishwasher, an engineer, a CEO, and occasionally I get paid to write or sail.

Now I’m in my small town era, both in fiction and real life. I live in Western Massachusetts with a big backyard that would be perfect for a goat if only SOMEONE would let me have one. I like my men to be sweethearts, the bedroom door wide open (with a splash of something new!) and the women to be independent and mature.

Yeah, nah. Not for me. The cute cover lured me in (fuck it's adorable), but the characters are flat and wooden, there isn't quite enough internal dialogue for me to really get a sense of Lila's character, and I'm not feeling the instalust.

I liked it. The premise of the book was interesting and engaging. I thought at times the characters were a little flat. Not enough inner dialogue on how the main character was feeling.

I loved the cover. I think it's just adorable. If given the opportunity to read the other planned novels in this series I would read them.

I was given an ARC in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

Thank you to Netgalley and the author for the chance to read and review Liz Alden’s debut novel, A Hitchhiker in Panama, prior to its 4/6 release!

After reading Shipped, I am all about the vacation spot romances. I am traveling through these destinations in these books because I can’t physically travel with COVID. So when I saw Panama on the title, I requested it.

This follows our main character Lila as she takes an adventure to travel to the Panama Canal and hops on board with the members of the Eik. There she meets Eivind, a Norwegian sailor who is gorgeous. Soon a romance ensues.

This book was described as a slow burn but that is the opposite of what happens. One second Lila and Eivind are talking and the next they are literally jumping each other’s bones and saying they love one another. It felt flat to me and like there was no romantic development or chemistry for that matter.

This book is told in first person through Lila, who is as stiff as a board. We hear what she is observing but nothing regarding her inner thoughts and emotions. She’s not the only character who appears dull. They all do.

I thought it was really cool that the author put a note at the end about how she has traveled through the Panama Canal herself twice. I feel like that made this story so much more personable. It’s clear that Alden knows what she’s talking about when it comes to these locations mentioned and the sailing terminology. The terminology did get a little confusing at times for readers like myself who know nothing about sailing. I think it would be even better if there was more explanations about those terms or less of them. I did like learning about the culture of all the destinations that they mention in this story.

The ending felt mediocre to me, and it is obvious by the ending that this will be a companion series and the next book will follow Eivind’s brother, and captain of the Eik; Jonas.

Not a bad debut but nothing that really sticks out to me. I am sure with time the authors writing will develop more.

Lila takes a sole adventure to Panama Canal. When she meets Eivind she gets chance of a lifetime. Does she go the way she planned or choose the unexpected?

The book is a fun easy read and I learned a lot more sailing terms than expected. You could really tell the author knew from personal experience since it was so detailed and understandable to someone who hasn’t sailed before.

If you are looking for a quick read to get you into the travel mood, pick up this book. The descriptions will have you wanting to plan out your own trip.

This one took me months to finish, not due to the book itself but more because of the worst reading slump ever.

Finally, with summer break upon me, I felt I could relax and enjoy the ending to this book. This is the perfect book for summer, or for those who love to travel to faraway places. Lila is a woman who wants to explore the world before settling down in a career. Her plans change when she meets Eivind, and she gets the opportunity to sail with him across the ocean.

I loved their dynamic, and was glad most of the conflict was external, like navigating life on a sail boat and figuring out what to do when it was all over, because I was rooting for them from the start.

The book is well written and I actually learned a lot about sailing! Perhaps in a little too much detail, but I could tell the author knew what she was talking about and I admired her passion for the subject.

This is the perfect vacation read!

I received this as an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

The Hitchhiker in Panama by Liz Alden, is her debut novel, and it is the first book in The Love and Wanderlust Series. This is a forced proximity contemporary romance. The Hitchhiker in Panama is Lila, an Australian backpacker, and Eivind, a Norwegian sailor’s love story. Lila lands in Panama to start her three-month adventure by first traveling through the Panama Canal before backpacking. Eivind is accompanying his brother as he lives out his dream of sailing across the world.

I really enjoyed this book, and it’s a well-written debut novel. As someone who one day wants to go on an adventure, this book was definitely something I knew I wanted to read as soon as I took a glance at the blurb. This book is extremely detailed and I can tell it was thoroughly researched. I liked the detail and knowledge to a certain extent, however, after a while the words jumbled together and I think it took away from the book. I loved the premise of the book too. An independent woman goes on the adventure of a lifetime and ends up finding love is basically my dream come true (I know I’m a hopeless romantic at heart).

After reading the prequel, I knew I wanted to continue this series and Liz Alden does not disappoint with this book. I loved getting to know all the characters, especially because they were from all different parts of the world and this added to the exotic vibe of the book. I enjoyed the build-up in Eivind and Lila’s relationship but wasn’t a fan of how fast they moved once they kissed because it seemed contradictory to a previous part of the book. I understand that the author was trying to show that these two couldn't help, but want to be together because of the intense attraction between them.

Overall, this is a great romance with adventure, exotic locations, and lovable characters.

Being from Panama, I was pretty excited to read a romance that takes place in my country. A story about a female hitchhiker that decides to cross the Panama canal on board a sailboat where she meets a man she starts to fall for, it sounded interesting! Sadly, I did NOT enjoy this book.

It's narrated in first person POV and it's pretty bothersome to read from this perspective when our main character lacks any sort of personality. Her head is empty and she only narrates what she does during the day, no type of thinking or monologue to take advantage of the POV. Because of this, the romance did not have any type of chemistry and felt extremely rushed. The synopsis said that it's a slowburn and that's a complete LIE. They get in each other's pants from the get-go, don't build up their relationship, spend their time having sex or sleeping and by the end... They're in love?
Also, the "conflict" was... Unnecessary, the drama that it created at the very end of the book just felt forced in.

The book is not just for me. From the simplistic writing style to the lack of chemistry or personality and the shallowness of everything, it was tedious to get through.

This book spoke to me because I wanted to go to Panama for a long time now and even tho it‘s kind of not that much about Panama, it was still a good read.
I liked this whole vacation vibe and I’m very fascinated by sailing in general. I liked most of the characters especially Eivind, who is just the sweetest guy!
However, for me personally the book focuses too much on sex and not enough on the relationship and friendships between the whole crew but that‘s just my personal preference! There is also a part in the end that just doesn’t make sense to me but I don‘t want to say too much, it‘s not bad or anything just confused me for a moment.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I love when a book pleasantly surprises you. The playful cover led me to believe this would be all fun and games, but I was quickly swept up in this adventurous romance.

Lila has decided to take some time for herself, away from her overbearing mother, and the routine life that awaits. She sets out with a plan to backpack in Panama.

She needs to find a boat that she can transit the Panama Canal on, or hitchhike as she calls it. She meets a hunky Norwegian sailor named Eivind who invites her aboard his brother’s sailboat.

The trip through the canal is not only a fascinating experience but it turns into a steamy connection between Lila and Eivind. Eivind and the crew invite Lila to stay on and help sail across the Pacific. So much for backpacking. But she will need to learn the ropes of sailing and what if this whirlwind relationship can’t withstand the waves?

I don’t think I could stand the forced proximity that Lila and Eivind had to endure on the boat, and not just with each other but between all the crew members. Alden did a good job with all the personalities bumping up against each other and it left me curious about their backgrounds and what happens to them next, which sets it up perfectly for the series.

If you enjoy travel, romance, and just escaping into a good book, then this is one you’ll enjoy.

Thank you to @lizaldenwriter for this #gifted e-book.

This book will be available on April 6, 2021.

Picked this up for free on the 3/4/25 Stuff Your Kindle day and man I'm so glad I did! The book lives up to the glorious cover art! I don't typically pick up a contemporary romance expecting to learn anything, but I finished this book feeling like I learned so much about sailing, international travel options, and the Panama Canal. Honestly, I was completely unaware of the magnitude and functional logistics of the Canal and the author described them perfectly for people who have never been or learned about it at length.

I also want to commend the author for writing spice that doesn't require either party to be a Level 10 gymnast or Greek deity, which I feel like I don't get a lot of anymore. I have absolutely nothing against writers who like to lay it on, those scenes are still fun to read! But sometimes it's nice to just read scenes that feel like romance mere mortals could participate in, if you know what I mean!

I have nothing but great things to say about this book. Highly educational without pedantry or info-dumping, the forced proximity trope was employed beautifully, just enough drama to carry the plot without making it unrealistic or over-the-top. It's apparently free on Kindle until 3/31/25, so if you haven't saved this one, I can't recommend it enough!

The Hitchhiker in Panama is Liz Alden's debut novel, but it feels like she's been writing for years.

It was very evident that Liz Alden knew what she was talking about in terms of knowledge about sailing and the Panama Canal. I loved that at the end she discusses her experience sailing and the characters that inspired the crew. At time the details felt too intricate, but I do appreciate that they were there and lead to the authenticity of this story.

This book made me wish that I didn't get sea sick and that it was safe to travel, because I would love to traverse the Panama Canal. I did think that the relationship between Lila and Eivind developed pretty quickly, but when you're spending all your time with someone that's bound to happen. I enjoyed watching the two of them grow and learn together.

This is the first book in the Love and Wanderlust series and I can't wait to read the rest. Especially after reading the short prequel novella, The Night in Lover's Bay. I need more Marcella!

Thank you to NetGalley and the author for providing me with an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.

Well, this was a breath of fresh, sea salty air (and holy hell Ms. Alden, you can write a steamy sex scene 🔥 🙌🏻)

The detail that went into sailing through the Panama Canal and across the pacific could only come from someone who has lived it and experienced it (and as it happens, she did multiple times). I was feeling all kinds of nostalgia for the romanticized parts of sailing. The exotic locales, the wide open sea with nary a spec on the horizon, the endless stars. The endless stars!!

HIP didn’t have any of the contrived tension or drama I normally read (which, don’t get me wrong, I love all that) but it wasn’t missed here. I felt like I was listening to a friend tell the juicy story about how she hitchhiked across the pacific and met a dreamy Scandinavian sailor. (Now, I don’t think I’d want THAT many steamy details about a friend’s sex life, but in a book, I’m here for it). It was real and believable and so damn swoony!

The only negative thing I could say is about the cover. I don’t dislike it, I think it’s incredibly cute but it didn’t give me an accurate feeling of what the book would be like. Upon initially seeing it I got ‘PG Tarzan and Jane on the seas retelling’ vibes - it’s definitely not PG and the story is way better than initially thought.

I was provided an ARC in exchange for my honest review.

Lila is hoping to find adventure, taking some time off to travel after graduation and see a bit of the world out there. Her plan is to sail with a crew across the Panama Canal. Then she can backpack a little in South America.

The crew she meets is easy to get along with, she learns a lot, and she is very attracted to the First Mate, Eivind. They allow her to stay with them on the next part of their trip where she gets to spend 25 days together. When Eivind and Lila take things further, will their relationship change her plans for moving on? Or will this just be a beautiful memory of having the best adventure of her life?

The first book in the Love and Wanderlust series a well written story that had me remembering my cruise on the Panama Canal. The writer brings Lila and Eivind to life as you watch the interaction with each other and the rest of the crew. The ending gives you a peak into whose story is next. This is a new Author to me. It was a really nice and adventurous story. The writing trasports you to other places and you can feel like you are under the sun and in the sea. Unfortunately, there are a lot of sailing terms that I have no idea what do they mean. In the beginning, it was really interesting and exciting, but after a while I got a bit overwhelmed. I would like a bit less of terminology and more of character development in order to rate it more than 3 stars.
However, a really entertaining book.

I enjoyed this story but I wish I had a little more back story for Lila and how she got to the point when the story takes place. I also wanted a little more chemistry or interactions from her and Eivind. I enjoyed the brothers’ story and can’t wait to read the sequel and I really enjoyed the journey we went on with the crew across the Pacific. I learned a lot of nautical terms which was cool!

A special thanks to the author and NetGalley for an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

Lila is taking a gap year away from her home in Australia. She lands in Panama hoping to find work as a crew member to cross through the Panama Canal on her way to backpack through South America. Her entire trip is planned down to the letter, all through internet research and reading blogs. She's ready to learn and she's ready to explore to find more out of life. After being welcomed into the crew of the Eik, Lila hits it off with Eivind, but tries to deny her feelings at every turn. Once landing in on the other side of the canal, Lila must make the tough decision of whether to follow her plans or follow her heart.

This was a wonderful debut novel! The setting is absolutely serene. You can feel it through the pages - the jungle, the sun and humidity and the sounds. It is escapist fun and just the story I needed to read right now. I am a huge fan of Below Deck, so I was fascinated by the inner workings of the yacht. There are parts that may get a little technical for some that don't know boats, but I really enjoyed learning how things work. You can tell that Alden has spent significant time sailing and knows her stuff.

My favorite part of the book was the cast of characters. They come from all over the world and their backgrounds are incredibly diverse. I loved seeing how the yachting community is like a family. They help each other out with question, acting with love and not out of obligation. Edith and Peter are hilarious and they made me smile.

Eivind was a wonderful hero. He was suave, incredibly flirty, and oh so adorable. He was persistent in his attraction to Lila and never let her forget that he wanted her and was into her. He was all about chasing Lila and showing her the world. And the open mic night performance...LOVED. My only wish for Eivind was to dive a tad deeper into his background, especially how he gave up being a chemist to sail the world and chose not to look back. I wanted to know more of why he was complacent working in a restaurant, instead of using his degree.

I am excited to read the next book in this series!

To start with, I want to thank Liz for kindly sending an ARC of her debut novel for me to read and give an honest opinion of!

I do not know Liz, I simply saw someone shared the book cover of her soon to be realeased book, and I was instantly attracted to it!

As a fellow world traveler and writer, the title and idea of this story caught my attention from the first second.

Jumping into the book though, I think my first impression through the first quarter of the book was that it was definitely not what I expected. And I don't mean that in a bad way, it's just that soemtimes I have this idea in my mind of what the book is going to be like, and then I get dissapointed. As I kept reading thought, the story caught me and I found it really interesting!

This is probably not a style of book I'm used to. The story it's what the description says it is, a nice ride along Panama that will make you wish with your whole being that you were in a boat sailing across the oceans.

I found it a little heavy on the sailing terms at times, and I found that there weren't many big conflicts, or if there was anything, it got resolved pretry quick. So don't go in expecting a typical plot were drama builds up until things expode and then it all gets resoved at the end. This story is almost a character driven chilled cruised along the blue sea.

In the middle of that, you'll get a few steamy romance scenes, which personally, I didn't think were too much. I don't think the resource was over used, but I didn't think it particularly drove the story either. It was good, well written, oiginal, and I enjoyed it! So that's that!

The romance itself is pretty adorable and wholesome, and I loved that about the book! I have to admit, I almost cried at the end!

None of the characters have huge back stories or traumas, but those things are still there so we can understand where everyone comes from.

For a debut novel, I think its a great work and it's worth the read! Easy to read in a couple of days, ideally while sipping on some bubbles and watching the sea from a golden beach. But oh well, my bed was good enough too!

Sorry, I got too excited analysing this, so I'll leave you with my favourite non-spoiler quotes to lighten the mood:

"Those jobs may be things we do now or things we do forever. I don't think my life will be all about what I do for a job, though."

"Can I kiss you?"

"I remind myself everyday, that this is an amazing adventure. I'm here to make the most of the time I have."

This debut from Liz Alden is a short, sweet, & sexy read that will fulfill some wanderlust cravings... and then some. If the sailboat's a rockin'... 🔥😏

Lila is a "backpacker with big plans". A chance meeting with "insatiable sailor" Eivind has her recharting her travel plans and possibly her future.

What I Loved:
-Getting fully acquainted with the ins/outs of how to actually cross through the Panama Canal. Who knew it was a.) so expensive! and b.) so complicated! It was kind of fascinating to read about the process. I’ve actually visited the Panama Canal and didn’t know the full details.

-It was also eye opening to get a kind of “Below Deck” POV for how things actually run on a sailboat. It’s a lot of tedious work and reading this gave me a new appreciation for the lifestyle.

-I also loved meeting fellow sailors/world travelers/expats. Even if they’re only in your life for a blip, those relationships can be especially meaningful.

-I liked seeing Lila and Eivind’s relationship blossom. I think certain circumstances, including being in the right head/heart space and also forced proximity ;) can escalate relationships. This didn’t feel too “insta-love”.

-Aussie slang. I think this would be a fun audiobook to listen to with the accents!

I really related to Lila . Her desire to explore the world (on a budget!) before she started the “real world” is something that really resonated with me. I stayed close to home for much of my early years, until an internship in another state. A fun group of neighbors there inspired me to start traveling more. I got a chance to study abroad in Spain, then take a trip with a group to Central America before I started my first journalism job. We spent time in Panama City and then along the Caribbean coast in a little spot called Bocas del Toro. I was working two jobs, bartending and waiting tables (and working for FREE at internships) so it was not a fancy trip by any means , but so worth it! Shortly after I accepted my first reporting job making less than $8/hr… so I’ll never regret taking those trips while I could (kinda) afford it!

Thank you to the author for the eARC! Solid 3.5 stars rounded up!

Liz Alden, ‘The Hitchhiker in Panama’.
A Love and Wanderlust Novel,
from the jungles of Panama to the adventures of a lifetime.

As an ARC reader I received a free copy of this book and voluntarily promised an honest review. Here it is.

Rating: 5 (of 5 stars).

In general: Adventurous hitchhiker falls in love.

Main characters:
- Lila Ryan.
She’s a backpacker from Sydney who wants to visit Latin America, starting in Panama. By plane she travels to Colon in Panama. There she finds a job on a vessel, the ‘Eik’, to sail through the Panama Canal. The yacht is owned by the Norwegian Jonas, who sails with his younger brother Eivind. The other crew members are two adventurous women, 5 star chef Marcella and Elayna, who fell in love with Jonas, when they were in Antigua. But Jonas, damaged by a bad break up with an ex-wife, doesn’t want a new relationship.
During the passage of the Panama Canal, Lila and Eivind like each other very much and - after a lot of hesitation - Lila cancels her South-American hitchhiking plans and becomes the fifth crew member of the ‘Eik’ to sail from Panama to New Zealand. A very special way of hitchhiking.

In my youth (a long time ago) I lived in a small port town on the North Sea and since that time I love reading about sea voyages. So this book is exactly what I like.
The author, Liz Alden, describes not only a nice love story but also a lot of action while sailing with a yacht through the Panama Canal and in the Pacific. For me, fascinating.
Another interesting part of the story was her description of the impact that 25 days - often very close together - have on the personal interaction between 3 women and two men on a relative smal vessel.
For me, the book was a pleasure to read and review.

I received an arc from the author for an honest review.

Lila decided to go on an adventurous 3 month trip to the Panama Canal after graduating from university after realizing that because of her overprotective mom she hasn't had the chance to leave her home country of Australia. Lila's plan was to start at the Panama Canal and find a boat in need of an extra crew member so that she can catch a ride across the canal. After a couple days of searching she is able to claim a spot on a boat named Eik with a handsome crew member named Eivind.

During her once in a lifetime experience Lila can't help but feel a crazy attraction with Eivind however she makes him promise her that he can only kiss her on the last day as she does not want to cause any drama of the boat before she is able to get to the other side of the canal.

This book was great, I loved the authors knowledge in sailing and the Panama Canal and it definitely gave me some wanderlust. The cake topper for me was at the end the author shares her actual experience sailing the exact same trip as the characters took as well as her inspiration boards for the crew. I found it made the whole story so much more interesting and helped me visualize the trip and characters. The romance in this novel was absolutely adorable and the ending was very satisfying.

If you couldn't get enough of this story you're in luck, if you subscribe to the authors newsletter you get access to an extra epilogue! And if that isn't enough there is also a short story prequel to this novel that is called The Night in Lover's Bay. This book is also a part of a series and I would be more then happy to read and review the following books!

*Note to the author: Please keep me in mind when you require readers to review ARCs, I would love to read the rest of your series!

This book was a wonderful distraction from the leftover winter blahs. Lila is backpacking around the globe, planning to hike down the continent of South America, when she detours to traverse the Panama Canal. There at the mouth of the canal, she meets the sexy Norweigian man, Eivind, and joins the crew of the Eik. Lots of adventure and fun, sexy times ensue!

Overall, I thought this book was very sweet and steamy, and most of all an escape. I liked the tension between Lila and Eivind before they got together and how their relationship grew the longer they stayed together. You want forced proximity? A tiny berth with little privacy is a great way to do it. I don’t want to ruin too much, but the jungle scene on the cover and the description is a very small part of the story. (IMO, this cover needed a boat, not a sloth) Most of the time is spent on the water with detailed explanations of what the boat and the crew are doing at any moment. It’s possible that a reader looking for a purely relationship-driven story might be put off by the day to day workings of a boat at sea, but I found them intensely immersive. I felt like I was on the boat, working the sails and staring up at a sky filled with stars. The presence of a handsome, buff Scandinavian man is not a bad thing either. Make sure you visit the author’s website when you’re done, as she writes more about her personal experiences on the Panama Canal and sailing in the Pacific, and her travel photos on her website are not to be missed. Thank you @netgalley for the arc in exchange for an honest review.

3.5 Stars! A sweet, sexy and surprisingly informative book!

Lila - this story is told solely from her POV. It follows her on a journey of self-discovery before settling down and starting a career. Her initial plan was to find a crewed boat and sail through the Panama Canal, followed by backpacking around South America. This all changed though when she starts to get closer to the sexy first mate, Eivind, on board. Will she change her plan to continue sailing across the Pacific with them? Can she risk her heart when she knows they'll have to finally go their separate ways?

Eivind - hunky Norwegian first mate and brother of the captain of the Eik sailboat. With his life seemingly going nowhere, he decides to join his brother on his quest to sail the Pacific Ocean. What he didn't expect was to find a gorgeous Australian who stole his heart along the way. He doesn't want to abandon his brother on his journey, but can he just let her go? I wish we had his POV, to really get into his mind!

This is a sweet slow burn, with some spice along the way, which follows a couple trying to figure out where they want to go in life. And who with. There was a lot of technical sailing jargon in this book, which did go over my head a lot, but it really showed how much the author actually knew what she was talking about. Which was super refreshing! Overall a nice easy, low angst read!

**Honest ARC review**

No cheating. Slight cliff-hanger (although nothing involving the MCs, but of more an introduction of where I think Jonas' book will follow). HEA guaranteed.

The Hitchhiker in Panama is a well-paced, entertaining, and light read. The tension building between the main character, Lila, and her crush, Eivind, is perfect and keeps you turning the pages. For me, this book was especially fun to read, because its sailing theme resonated. Like Liz Alden, I’ve extensively traveled the seas, so I was familiar with the locations and recognized events and situations, all accurately portrayed in this book.

The author also explains some basics about sailboats and sailing, which adds an extra dimension to the story, particularly if you’re curious to learn more about the nautical world. The nuances of the cruising life, crew dynamics, and living in close quarters are interwoven as a backdrop for this steamy romance novel.

While this book is well written and offers a nice, complete “package” of a story, the characters could have been fleshed out a bit more. I wish I knew what caused the struggles in Jonas and Alayna’s relationship, for example, and I would have loved learning more about what Lila goes through in her mind, on an emotional level. Since the story is written in the first person, it invites personal insights and thoughts.

If you like contemporary chick lit with an adventurous spin and a unique approach that is set in a tropical location, this book is for you!

I received an ARC of this book from BookSirens and the author. I leave a review voluntarily. As always, I attempt to focus on a critique rather than simply describing the plot. The book synopsis does a pretty good job of that!

So, why did I pick up this book? Well, long story, short, I owned a yacht for six months. The summer of COVID found my family looking for other options, and we bought a used yacht. The plan was to keep her, motor around in her, and fix her up. Unfortunately, Hurricane Sally had other plans; hence, I owned a yacht.

When I saw the plot of Alden's book, sailing, I thought it would bring back memories of my time on the water and the learning process I had as the line handlers. Although Her Diamond was not a sailboat, but a motoryacht, many of Lila's struggles and the daily shipboard life were relevant.

This is definitely escapist chick lit. I am, quite frankly, a little jealous that Lila and Eivand can just take off to sail. Their relationship develops quickly, but realistically, and, at times, steamily. Yes, there are some graphic scenes.

I enjoyed traveling along with Lila. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to escape reality and the 9 to 5 grind. You do not need to be knowledgeable about yachtie language; Alden does a great job explaining without over-explaining.

It's about the journey... And the destination!
Lila is an Aussie about to start backpacking through South America. This trip is the first big adventure she's been on to get out of her comfort zone and experience something new.
Lila's carefully constructed plans start with going through the Panama Canal, hitchhiking with whatever boat needs an extra crew member. Enter Eivind, the first mate to his brother's sailboat. He's hot, funny, and very interested in Lila.

This is my first travel romance and I'll say it's like no other romance I've read. The writing style took some getting used to for me because everything has a realistic edge to it, from sailing logistics to the progression of a love story while living on a boat.
This book is, first and foremost, an experience. We get to experience things that very few people ever do as Lila has this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

Things I loved:
-The character dynamics in this young crew are a blast (I can't wait for Eivind's brother's book!).
-Lila's and Eivind's relationship grows organically with ups, downs, and adventures.
-Even though it's a slow burn (not usually my thing) there's a lovely amount of hot parts that build in the story until the fire really starts going.

I'm the biggest homebody so it was a delight to get to tag along on Lila's journey and have an adventure from my couch. (No boat bites for me!)

This book was average. I didn't love it but I didn't hate it either. It has some good-ish moments but mostly for me this was meh. I was intrigued due to the premise of backpacking and sailing. It looked like it could be a fun and quick romance to read. It went by very fast.
Some thoughts I have after reading it is, this went by way too fast and I would have liked to see more of their real relationship. They are in a high stake, high stress situation and how they coped just don't translate that well to real life if you ask me.

The romance in itself is okay, I didn't mind it. I saw others describing the sex scenes as steamy which in my opinion, it wasn't. It was like a normal romance level of steam maybe?
Eivind is okay, I didn't mind having a Norwegian love interest but he was just so bland. I felt like I didn't really know him after reading about him, but much more knew stuff about his brother Jonas (which the next book is about). The romantic like charging up to them getting together was just nothing in my opinion, it just happened really fast and I'm not a fan of that portion of the book.

Some of the story was also kinda stupid in terms of conscription and the general consensus here in Norway and I cringed while reading it. And I cannot speak for the Aussie elements of the book. I might read the next one, I don't know yet.
All in all, decent but not great.

I love traveling and the best part is always the weird situations where you find yourself asking, “Wait, I can do that?” I’ve never crossed the Panama Canal but as soon as I read the premise of the novel, I realized Liz Alden was my favorite type of traveler: the type of finds those weird situations and actually does them.

The book opens with Lila, a young professional escaping her day-to-day by embarking on a South American adventure. She doesn’t sail but she does know that boats need a minimum amount of crew to cross the Panama Canal and starts her trip by offering her services as a warm body to make the passage. She boards the Eik and falls for the brother of the captain, Eivind, in the process.

The Hitchhiker in Panama is such a relaxing read. I enjoyed the sailing just as much as the romance. The romance was steamy but also discussed consent and protection. There wasn’t unnecessary drama, just real human emotions. If you want a book for the beach or to pretend you’re at the beach, this fits the bill. I can’t wait to read the rest of the series.

Disclosure: I received an advance reader copy of this book and this is my honest review.
