Rate this book
Welcome to Boring, Indiana, home to patio cookouts, homeowner dues, carpeted lawns, and neighbors so welcoming they’re dying to meet you — literally.

City slicker turned suburbanite housewife Laura Berry isn’t taking well to life in her new neighborhood. She moved to follow her husband’s dream, and now she can’t tell if she’s clinically depressed or just bored half to death. But Boring becomes anything but when Laura discovers her neighbor Candace Flynn face up on a sofa with her hand buried in a snack bag. With a healthy dose of neighborly suspicion and street smarts, Laura sets out to find Flynn’s killer, but her curiosity becomes desperation when the killer targets Laura.

Someone is determined to stop her from digging deeper into the murder, but Laura is just as determined to figure out who’s behind the death-by-poisoned-pork-rinds.

Christy Barritt is an author, freelance writer and speaker who lives in Virginia. She’s married to her Prince Charming, a man who thinks she’s hilarious—but only when she’s not trying to be. Christy’s a self-proclaimed klutz, an avid music lover who’s known for spontaneously bursting into song, and a road trip aficionado. She’s only won one contest in her life—and her prize was kissing a pig (okay, okay… actually she did win the Daphne du Maurier Award for Excellence in Suspense and Mystery also). Her current claim to fame is showing off her mother, who looks just like former First Lady Barbara Bush
When she’s not working or spending time with her family, she enjoys singing, playing the guitar, and exploring small, unsuspecting towns where people have no idea how accident prone she is.

2.5* I would have given this 3 stars but there were a few things that bothered me.

First off, I was confused by how old the protagonist Laura Berry was -- she starts off by saying her 70-year-old friend Babe was about 3 times her age; okay, I'm a math geek so I figure 70 ÷ 3 = ~23. On the young side to be a suburban housewife but possible. A chapter or so later though, we are told she met her husband when a sophomore in college and she has been married for 6 years; later we are told they dated for 2 years before marrying. Either she is supersmart & went to college at 13-14 years old or she is NOT 1/3 of 70. I know that this isn't really important but it distracted me from the story trying to figure it all out.

Then there were the names -- Tiara, Darius, Chief Romeo, Gia, Steele, Babe etc. They just sound phony to me... Although I did like the fact that Laura lived on the Dullington Estates in Boring, Indiana!

Next was the repeated discussion about mowing lawns in winter -- does the author not know that winter is from the end of December to the end of March? Who mows in Indiana or any of the northern US then?? Even if the ground is free of snow, the plants are not growing.

Lastly, the religious aspects of Laura's life were a bit much for me. This one was just a minor issue but it came up more and more as the book went on & I would have some concerns about this in future books in the series.

On the plus side, I liked the protagonist & the setting. The writing was decent and the mystery kept me guessing. I would try another one from the library but I wouldn't pay for it.

I liked the end better than the beginning and the beginning was too interesting to put down. I recommend the book to all cozy lovers and know you will enjoy it as much as I.

Why I read the book:
The book was on my Kindle, and most likely a freebie.

Synopsis of the Book
Death of the Couch Potato's Wife is about a young couple, Laura and Kent, who uproot themselves from successful careers in downtown Chicago and move to suburban Boring, Indiana. The primary reason for their move is so that Kent can launch his own pharmacy. Laura becomes a bored suburban housewife, who hates housework, yet toils away at it to keep up appearances for the neighbors. Babe is the only person in the neighborhood to genuinely become friends with Laura. The rest of the community sees the couple as outsiders who will ruin suburbia with their city ways. One day Babe is worried about another neighbor, Candace, who hasn’t been seen in a while, and whose yard and home are being neglected, to the point of potentially incurring fines from the Homeowners’ Association. Candace doesn't answer the door - which happens to be unlocked (apparently typical for the Dullington Estates area). Babe convinces Laura to sneak into the house, justifying it as “just being neighborly.” They find Candace dead, sparking a series of death threats, odd behavior, poisoned food, Homeowners’ Association politics, and the occasional explosion. Babe sees herself as an amateur sleuth, and drags Laura along as she tries to solve the murder before the police do. Meanwhile Laura is increasingly discontented with her role as a suburban housewife, and fears that her marriage is falling apart while her husband doesn’t seem to notice or care.

My opinion of the book:
This was an entertaining murder mystery. I was kept guessing at the identity of the murderer right up to the end, which is how I like my mystery stories. The thing that really didn’t work in this book was the relationship between Kent and Laura. It didn’t fit in well with the overall plot to the point that it was almost a jarring break when the narrative switched to the topic of their marriage.

The second thing that didn’t work in this book was the “Christianity” of Laura and Kent. As a Christian, I have no objection to Christian themes in a book, provided they are well done. However, Death of the Couch Potato’s Wife completely fails to make the couple believable Christians. Neither the author’s bio nor the book description give any indication that she is a Christian, or that the book is meant to be Christian Fiction. The first indication that the couple have any sort of faith comes in chapter 15 (of 30) when the couple attends Boring Community Church, which up to that point had seemed like more of a community center than a church. The next few chapters bring up Laura’s faith here and there. Chapters 24 and 25 get into a little mote detail and the final chapter reads very much like the typical Christian mystery novel would. There really seemed to be no purpose to the Christianity in this book, and it was theologically very poor.

This was an easy read made difficult by the formatting problems in the kindle edition. One person would speak, the other answer that person, and the dialogue would appear as one person speaking so I was constantly having to stop and think about who was talking to whom (okay, not that difficult but distracting).

The mystery -- who killed the wife of the sofa king -- was not that difficult to solve and the characters weren't particularly likeable except for one named Babe.

I really wasn't that fond of the main character, Laura Berry, a 'new' housewife who seems unable to adjust to her new life in a rather ordinary suburb. She'd prefer to be living elsewhere and working full-time as she did before they moved to Boring, Indiana.

I liked this - it was a good little holiday read. It was well constructed. Good characters, easy language. In fact if I had one criticism it would be that it wasn't really descriptive. There could have been more vivid language in some places as it often read like a screen play rather than an evolving novel. This did make it simple reading for the christmas break. No surprises was nice and safe reading.

The main character felt a bit spoilt in parts - a lot of "all about me". I only really liked Babe her older friend who seemed a lot more original than a number of the subcharacters. The husband was pretty two dimensional which was a shame.

Overall I liked the story but I won't be rushing out to read anything more about these characters (or town).

Laura Berry has left her urban life in a big city for a life in suburban Boring, Indiana. She's escaping multiple bad events in her past, but dealing with the neighborhood's Home Owner's Association isn't much better. When one of her only new friends in town turns up dead, Laura dives into investigating the murder - there isn't much else to do in Boring.

I was surprised about how much I disliked this novel. I've read Christy Barritt's Squeaky Clean series and loved it! But this was FAR from the quality those novels. The character and plot development were terrible in this book. For one, Laura was a whining brat the entire book! She had several things to mope about, all tangents that the book could have done without entirely. There weren't any likable characters, no one worth cheering for. The plot was predictable, I honestly guessed the culprit from the moment they made their first appearance.

I really hope Christy Barritt doesn't waste any more time making this into a series as planned - it isn't worth it. I'm glad I grabbed this as a free kindle book, and only wasted my time reading it.

About the Kindle Edition - there are MAJOR formatting problems that make the story incredibly hard to follow. The breaks between characters' dialog aren't made when they should be, so often it's impossible to know when one character starts speaking after another. Paragraphs are also broken up at random, punctuation is missing... I'm surprised that it hasn't been pulled for further editing.

This was a fun read for me. There were some problems with the Kindle version, but I doubt that's the author's fault. I read this about a year ago and have been looking for the sequel(s) ever since. Anybody HELP??? I loved the characters in here and the little nick names. The humor was interesting, not really my style, but good for a laugh. That's one thing I love about Christy Barritt, though. She writes in different styles with some on the serious side, some just plain hilarious, some witty with mystery, and so forth. So when I pick up a Christy Barritt novel (on my Kindle), I can't wait to see what kind of book it will be. With this author, I NEVER read the descriptions- just so I can be surprised! And I'm never disappointed no matter the style. Christy Barritt is definitely a one-of-a-kind author which rates her pretty high in my book!

A cute, funny, cheesy read.

Laura and Babe find their neighbor dead laying on her couch with her hand in a bag of pork skins. When it is ruled murder they set out to protect the others in their neighborhood. Laura a lady in her 20's is paranoid about every little thing going on. Most of the time it is nothing but she gets herself in a lot of messes due to her fears. Babe a lady in her 70's is a nosy sort and encourages Laura to get involved in more than she should just so she'll have the inside scoop.

Read this cute story of how two ladies who are exactly opposites keep their selves in trouble and the things that they do to get out of it.

You'll laugh all the way through.

To live in a city named Boring, in a neighborhood labeled Dullington Estates, is it any wonder that you would have nothing but nosy neighbors and that there’d be nothing to do?

But that seems to change when a neighbor goes missing and is found dead on her couch. So much for life in sweet, but safe, suburbia, right?

Obviously, the likely suspect would be the victim’s husband, the Couch Potato King, who sells couches. How ironic.

As a victim of a crime in the past, Laura is hesitant to get involved, but that all flies out the window when she starts receiving threatening letters and finds out that someone is watching her, actually videotaping her.

Everyone in town is a suspect—a cheating husband, a futon-selling competitor, a candidate for a homeowner’s association.

Being a housewife has bored Laura so much that she is questioning everyone and everything—her neighbor’s motives, her rocky marriage, her happiness, everything. Could solving a murder actually kick the boredom? Maybe, except that she was terrible at it. I mean, I like stories with amateur sleuths, but, usually, they have some qualified skills for it (eye for detail, good memory, karate skills, something.) Laura didn’t have anything, plus, she kept on guessing wrong throughout the whole book. What kind of amateur sleuth was that?

But, overall, this was a quick, quirky mystery.

An exploration of "Christian" mysteries

I have become aware of the labeling of many genre as Christian. So I decided to read some, to see what was behind it. In this book i felt it was a little of a deterrent in that it took time away from the mystery as it distracted me from paying proper attention to clues and info. This story was pretty fast paced, too, so it was another element to deal with among the threads of the story. I think the English mystery writers have a better take on this as many involve clerical backgrounds, without causing hitches in the works.of the story.
I expect it is also a codeword, so people will not have to exercise any judgement in choosing books. Just look for the ""Chistian" label and you won't be bothered with anything that is questionable. Otherwise I liked the characters and the premise.

DNF @ 52%. I almost gave up on this book earlier, but the protagonist got a threatening note, so I thought maybe it's more promising than I thought. But it quickly became more about her marriage issues & the neighbors' gossip. Also, the town is weird. It's supposed to be a small town, but the character's seem to be really well off, like an affluent neighborhood (perfectly manicured nails, a character named Tiara. Tiara, for pete's sake!). They don't seem like a middle class small town, but more like Sherman Oaks. Then the town is described as having a suburb. Small towns don't usually have suburbs — they ARE the suburbs. It was confusing enough to be a bit distracting. Is Boring, Illinois a small town or an affluent suburb of Chicago or something?

This looked like an interesting story and since I am from a small town in Indiana, I grabbed it. I liked the characters, especially Babe. She is so much fun and so interesting. Laura and her husband moved to Boring, Indiana from Chicago. Laura thinks the town might be aptly named. She just can't seem to get into the whole idea of small town living. She is afraid that she is failing in her marriage after failing at her job. Then she finds her next door neighbor dead. There are plenty of suspects and the killer is threatening Laura and her husband. Will she be able to find the killer before she and her husband are dead?

Laura is new to suburbia, bored she doesn’t know exactly what being neighborly includes. Her first act is to sign up with her neighbor Babe and joins the neighborhood watch.

Babe talks Laura into going next door neighbor Candace’s to see if she is okay as her lawn hasn’t been taken care of and her storm door is banging open, They find Candace dead on the couch her hand in a bag of pork rinds. As part of the neighborhood watch they begin snooping into Candace's murder.

The plot is set as a mystery but it also allows the author to make points about self-confidence and personal relationships. I would have preferred just the mystery.

After my last two books were DNFs, I was happy to enjoy Death of the Couch Potato's Wife. I liked twenty-somethings Laura Berry and her husband Kent. New residents of Boring, Indiana, they are getting to know the small town and its people. Unfortunately for Laura, she and her new friend Babe discover one of their neighbors dead on her couch! When Laura receives threats, she urgently wants to solve the murder. I liked getting to know the eclectic group of people in Boring (what a perfect name for a town) and seeing Laura and Kent "find their way". I think future books in this series will be fun to read.

A light read

While the story line was interesting and the editing was good it just didnt have the oomph i was expecting. It didnt hold my interest even though i did finish the book. I did like it being written in the first person. I think the characters needed better development. The plot was well thought out but i wasnt surprised at the ending. This is one of my favorite seasoned authors so i was a little disappointed. I will continue to buy her books.

A cute, little murder mystery with a touch of Christianity. Laura and Kent were too clingy as a couple, though. Especially Laura. She needed to know where Kent was when he wasn’t with her. And, oh, horrors, if he wanted to watch sports when he was home. Like Babe, her friend, said, Laura needed to get a life.
And what did Laura decide to do at the end of the book? Go to work in the pharmacy with Kent. Shish!

Lighthearted with A Timely Message

Christy Barrit never disappoints. This stand alone story is very heartwarming. I found myself relating to the main character and her quest to seek happiness, especially in her marriage. Messages about extending grace, giving others the benefit of the doubt, the importance of friendship and the pros and cons of a rural town vs an urban one are spot on. Meanwhile, there are enough quirky characters to keep you laughing and turning the page.

Cozy mystery

Christy barritt usually writes gritty suspense or mysteries with big, evil crooks. This was simply a neighborhood association, HOA, with one little hitch--the treasurer of the HOA turned up dead! Murdered at the hand of an elusive criminal. Oh, there were many suspects. An inept police department meant the amateurs were going to have to solve the mystery. And they set out to do just that. It was a fun read.

Small town murder!

Take a couple from the big city and move them to a small town called Boring, Indiana and throw in a murder, a couple of threatening notes, scary phone calls, an attempted murder, a break in and trashing of their business and a plethora of suspects. With the help of a seventy year old sidekick follow Laura to the conclusion.

Dullington Estates in Boring Indiana. Who would think anything, much less murder, could even happen here. Laura and her husband Kent had moved to Boring to escape big city life. Laura stumbles across the murder victim and the big city life begins to look good again. Enjoy this cozy mystery and the antics of the good people of Dullington Estates!

Fast read and quick

Boring Indiana is anything but boring. That's what Laura thought it was going to be when she moves there with her husband. Instead they find missing persons, affairs, murder and a police who don't know what they seem to be doing. Laura starts asking questions and now she may be next. I enjoyed this a lot.

2.0 -- I usually like Christy Barritt's books. I buy the kindle version whenever she publishes a book, so I have lots of them. However, I didn't care much for this book. I don't know how much that was due to the narrator of the audiobook, whose narration I disliked. But I can't say I liked any of the characters, either.

This was only so/so. It was a quick fluffy read (which I like) but the writing seemed “amateur-ish”. The main character was self-doubting but popular amongst her peers, aside from being threatened after she discovered a body of a neighbour. She became an amateur sleuth to figure out whodunit. Sprinkle in some silliness and a healthy dose of God and you get this. Only meh.

I loved this story- got the email from Christy saying she updated this older book & re-released it for kindle unlimited. The title doesn’t do it justice/ I’d never thought of reading it before but so glad I did! Full of humor & loveable characters, it’s a real mystery that isn’t solved until the end!

A Bit Quirky

The Death of the Couch Potato’s Wife just has to be a bit quirky! Quirky can be good, it can be very, very good.
These are definitely a different type of character, and characters they are. Ms. Barritt is a superstar when it comes to creating believable, relatable characters. Grab a snack, open the book, and have some serious (?) fun!

Tolerable read. Entertaining, simple, but annoying. The mystery was ok, but predictable, and the humour was sometimes forced.
The narrator gave it a feel of boredom perfect for the setting, Boring, Indiana (rolls eyes)

A Jigsaw Puzzle of a Book

The murder plot is dissected into many pieces with suspicion being directed at first one then another character in a cast of several suspects. I found this book to be an average reading, not good not bad.
