Pittsburgh crime reporter Rita Locke risks her career and her life after the pre-teen daughter of her former police detective boyfriend is abducted. She joins forces with the girl's father to stop the kidnapper, but will they find him before he takes his next victim?
10/10 would read this book again and any other books Robin Acton writes. As a Pennsylvania native and Univeristy of Pittsburgh (albeit Bradford campus) Alumni, as well as a resident of Cranberry Twp out that way Yonder... I could feel myself being a spectator of these happenings because of her precise descriptions. An amazing novel!
Great debut novel by Robin Acton. The Taker is fast-paced and, with Acton's background as a journalist, the reader gets the courtroom atmosphere without being bogged down or confused by too much judicial lingo. Although I surmised early on the "whodunit," I was still highly engaged, wanting to know if justice would be served. While I found the dynamics between the protagonist, journalist Rita Locke (aka Red), and the other characters endearing and relatable, I wanted a tad more info on ex Frank... probably my least favorite character in The Taker, honestly. Red deserves better. My favorite characters were Rita's editor Tom (who I could picture with a desk full of newspapers and a coffee stain on an important file) and the strong, smart Lindy Parks, who I was rooting for throughout the story.
Though a bit predictable, I really enjoyed this debut novel by Robin Acton. Being a Pennsylvania girl it was interesting to read this thriller with nearby locations.
I don't normally read crime/courtroom novels, but I'm glad I picked this one up. Robin's writing style is clear an easy to read/follow. I really enjoyed the characters and the plot was well thought out entertaining.
There was a section (pg 59) when Lindy's ordeal had escalated and her internal dialogue was being described that was especially well done.
I do wish I had more depth/backstory especially between Rita and Frank's relationship, though. It was touched on, but I wanted all the details on their history. I felt like I was missing a previous book. I wanted more of them. <3
At the end of the day it was a great read! I'll definitely check out any other books she writes.
