The world was first overrun by zombies fifty years ago, but Leo doesn’t really mind. He has a decent life as the de facto delivery guy for those who remain. He enjoys his solitary existence as he ferries valuable resources around on his bike through the crumbling city that once held millions, and now numbers in the hundreds.
But now Leo is seeing evidence that the zombies are becoming more mindful. The terrifying discovery leads Leo down a rabbit hole that endangers everything he's ever known as he tries to save the people of his city. In his efforts, Leo discovers he might need other people more than he ever realized. Can he save the city, or will he lose everything he’s ever known, just like the rest of the world had a decade before he was even born?

This is my second time reading this book and it’s just as good the second time around. I really enjoy this novel because the main character Leo is just trying to live a “normal” life in a time of a not so normal existence. The author brings up issues not commonly thought about. Example being how the elastic is long gone from Leo’s underwear and he now has to pin them in the back to fit. Or talk of a hot bath and how that’s no longer an everyday luxury anymore. It’s these types of details that really sucks the reader into this long abandoned world and makes them feel empathy for the characters.
I love the character development throughout and we meet a lot of people along the journey that you begin to care for. Even some that have already passed on, the reader connects with from the way the author describes them. There is a great build up from the get go, and there are lots of unique foreshadowing that keeps the reader guessing how the story will play out.
I’m really looking forward to what’s to come from this series. Scout is my spirit animal and my hope is she will become a main character throughout this series and if she does, I won’t be mad. Now to join Leo and the others as the journey continues!
This will be the first time I'll be the first person to review a book and I'm happy to say that I very much enjoyed this new spin on the zombie apocalypse. Zombie apocalypse books are a one click for me in most cases but in about half the time I end up either returning the book or stopping the read because it's just awful. I finished this book in audiobook format, borrowed from hoopla, in about 6 hours, Non-Stop. It was really good in my opinion I really like Leo and I was happy to see that this author wanted to show the wholesome side of survivors 40-plus years after a zombie apocalypse has decimated everything.
The primary character are likable and relatable. I like that most of the evil human concepts were gone in this book. It was just a bunch of survivors in a city trying to survive when they are confronted with a new strain of zombie behaviors. The shambling dead have learned how to climb stairs and open doors, start fires and trap survivors and at some points are capable of higher reasoning and thought. There is a suspenseful element throughout the book surrounding our main character feeling as though he's being watched, having his home invaded and other eerie things that are explained by the end of the first book. I really enjoyed the concept of how the new zombie strain started and I'm so excited to read the next book, can't come soon enough.
