Rate this book

Written and serialised during the last eighteen months of his life, Lee Yee’s unfinished memoir is a catharsis about misplaced innocence and the search for authenticity. It is at times confessional, apologetic, and even remorseful. The unbearable weight of cognitive dissonance ultimately led to liberation and redemption. Whilst the book has a litany of laments, it also emanates a passion as intense as it may appear quixotic. I don’t doubt his integrity but he does make occasional insinuations that beckon if not demand fact checking by the reader. Don’t expect any arresting exposé. Rather, enjoy his perspicuous analyses and sharp observations. He may not be right all the time, but his opinions should surely stimulate the reader to think and critique. His prescience was painfully and tragically accurate. The book is not for the faint hearted. It’s poignant, wistful, nostalgic, and sometimes downright depressing. In any case, it has an immense and interesting cast: sagacious literati, dreadful opportunists, naive idealists, and laughable hypocrites. Published posthumously, it does need some editing to declutter the occasional repetitiveness and to organise the disjointed. (Is it really necessary to have three chapters on parallel-counterpoint poems?) In having said that, it’s a page turner even when one already knows its inevitable ending. At over 800 pages, it’s certainly long but is never a drag. Many instances are indeed deeply moving. It’s truly an inspiring testimony to savour.

This book gave me a brief history of HK movements

I did not know the scene behind the Hong Kong movements . This book gave me an insider view of how happened in Hong Kong for the last sixty years. I would have no idea what we’re happening when I was a teenager or a young adult. It also told me how communist party worked in Hong Kong and China. It revealed the dark age of Hong Kong history. Hope that the future will not be darker than then.

Great book spanning from modern chinese history, and HK political developments from 1980s to 2020. It was really easy to read as they are mainly personal compelling stories!
