اخترعت سلاحاً لكي أحمي وطني الأم
ميخائيل كلاشينكوف
- الكلاشينكوف او "الكلش" او "الأخمس" تسميات متعددة لسلاح اخترعه شاب روسي يدعى ميخائيل كلاشينكوف منذ سبعين عاماً، بدافع عدم امتلاك الجيش السوفياتي بندقية هجومية بفعالية البندقية الألمانية:

صناعة البندقية كانت متأثرة بالبندقية الألمانية، ومع انهيار المانيا النازية وسطوع نجم الإتحاد السوفياتي فمن الطبيعي ان يسطع نجم الكلاشينكوف، ولو انتصرت المانيا لربما تغير عنوان الكتاب ولم نسمع بالكلاشينكوف.
- في الفصول الأول تحدّث الكاتب عن المخترع وحياته وكيفية الوصول الى اعتماد اختراعه، وكانت فصولاً جيدة جداً، ومن ثم بدأ بتجميع الفصول اللاحقة ليثبت وجهة نظره ان الكلاشينكوف يصنع ثقافة معينة من فييتنام الى نيوأورلنز، لم يوفّق كثيراً في هذا الرأي وأدخل الكثير من تجاربه الشخصية وقصص أفلام وتعميمات لم تزد الكتاب سوى صفحات لا قيمة لها.
- أعتقد ان انتشار هذا السلاح عائد لسببين اثنين: فعاليته في شتى الظروف المناخية، وسعره الرخيص (لا يتجاوز سعره ال 50 دولاراً في بعض الأماكن) كما ان المنظومة الشيوعية السابقة صدّرته (منحاً او بيعاً) لمعظم الدول المناوئة للغرب واليوم يوجد اكثر من 70 مليون قطعة منه في ارجاء المعمورة. بينما البندقيات المتطورة الحديثة والتي تصنعها مصانع كلاشينكوف الروسية الحديثة لم تلق رواجاً كبيراً لتشابه اسعارها مع نظيرتها الامريكية والبلجيكية وغيرها، رغم فعاليتها العالية وقدراتها الكبيرة.
وكما حدث في فييتنام، فقد اثبتت بيندقية الكلاشنكوف انها افضل من بيندقية أم16 وكان الجنود الأمريكان يتذمرون مرة اخرى ويشكون من ان اسلحتهم الآلية لا تعمل كما يجب. في العراق لم تكن الحرارة والرطوبة هما سبب تعطل السلاح بل كان الرمل والتراب الناعم، ولجعلها تعمل بشكل صحيح، اضيف وقت جديد للعناية بالسلاح يسمى "وقت تنظيف الأسلحة"

بندقية الكلاشنكوف
في بدايات الحرب العالمية الثانية، وعندما كان الألمان يكتسحون الجبهة الشرقية ويقتربون من موسكو، قاتل شاب يدعى ميخائيل كلاشينكوف الألمان ببسالة ولكنه أصيب، كانت الأمة كلها في صدمة وقتها من التقدم الألماني الظافر والسريع وانسحاق الجيوش السوفييتية على كل الجبهات، كان الجميع يبحث عن حلول لهذه الكارثة القومية، وكرجل عاش التجربة كانت أكبر مشكلة واجهت كلاشينكوف هي تفوق البندقية الألمانية (الشتورمجفير) على البنادق الروسية، هكذا وهو في المستشفى، بدأ كلاشينكوف يضع خططه لصناعة بندقية روسية، تقارع البندقية الألمانية أو تتفوق عليها، على هذه البندقية أن تكون بسيطة، فعالة، نصف آلية، بمخزن كبير، وأن تتحمل أقسى الظروف.
وقد نجح كلاشينكوف في مهمته هذه، فقد صنع أشهر سلاح ناري على الإطلاق، وهو بندقية الـ AK47، والتي ارتبطت باسمه وصارت تعرف بالكلاشينكوف، تفوقت هذه البندقية على نظيرتها الأمريكية الـ M16، حتى أن الجنود الأمريكان في حالات معينة في فيتنام، تخلوا عن بنادقهم التي خذلتهم كثيراً، واستخدموا البندقية الشيوعية العظيمة.
في كتابه هذا يحاول مايكل هوجز تتبع تاريخ الكلاشينكوف، ولكنه لا يفلح إلا في الفصل الأول فقط، أما بقية الفصول فيبدو تائها بتتبعه لصراعات سياسية استخدمت فيها الكلاشينكوف، وهو ما لا يضيف للقارئ أي جديد.

A surprising little book, that tells more than the physical story of this infamous gun...but the human costs of this gun becoming part of war...and part of society. It was a fascinating and tragic read, but one that flew by with concise, straightforward writing.

The book starts out with the interesting backstory of the creator of the AK 47 and how the gun came into being. The rest of the book details conflicts that involve the AK 47 and how some middle eastern cultures have the gun firmly embedded into the culture.
The last chapter surprised me. I could not believe such baloney was included in a book that was trying to base itself on facts. This chapter includes pointing out how powerful the AK was portrayed in the movie The Deer Hunter; the author apparently fails to note that a movie could make a pea-shooter deadly. The following paragraph points out the movie Rambo is not historically accurate. Just how intelligent does this author believe his audience to be?
The author also points out the game Counter-Strike (he even spells the name of the video game wrong) features an AK, and that people use it in-game because "[H]olding a Kalashnikov said, 'I am a rebel', and the Kalashnikov become the weapon of choice for a succession of angry and unhinged Americans." [pg 195] Complete poppycock. The reason that gun is used in Counter-Strike is because it's powerful and the first shot is 100% accurate. The author's incorrect statements portrayed as truth hurts the authority of the book overall.
The first few chapters were excellent. It's too bad the author had to blatantly push his political views and obviously incorrect statements in the last.

Looking at the book at a glance, it could be easily mistaken for a technical exploration of the Kalashnikov and while yes it does cover the initial story of it's design and the life of its creator, the book doesn't stop there. Instead we get an exploration of the AK's place in world history since 1947 and how it has taken on a life of it's own beyond that of a simple tool designed in the back rooms of a Soviet tractor factory. Hodges skips through the last 80 years detailing how the unique shape of the rifle has taken on a myriad of different meanings across the globe. From a symbol of terror, to a mark of rebellion, a tool of hope and a rite of passage. Much like how every culture on Earth independently developed the bow, every culture on Earth assigns a different meaning to the AK.
Incredible read of how the AK has become such an icon for humanity.

يقصّ علينا الكاتب تاريخ بندقيّة الكلاشينكوف من وقت صناعتها حتى المراحل المختلفة التي غيّرت فيها هذه البندقيّة مجرى الحروب، وكانت رمزًا للكفاح المسلّح والمقاومة الشرسة.
لو فكّرنا قليلًا في أهم العوامل التي تدفع الجيوش للفوز بالحروب لكان السلاح أهمّها، هذا ما كان يجول في فكر ميخائيل كلاشينكوف مخترع السلاح في الوقت الذي كان يرى فيه الجيوش الألمانية تُمزّق جيوش السوفييت وتُحرز تقدّمًا غير مسبوق، كانت الشرارة التي دفعته لتصميم سلاح هجومي دقيق التصويب خفيف الوزن يعمل في أسوأ الظروف ليقلب بذلك تأخر السوفييت إلى تقدم في كثير من مواقع الحرب.
يأخذنا الكاتب في رحلة كانت بطلتها بندقية الكلاشينكوف من الإتحاد السوفييتي إلى حرب فييتنام مرورًا بفلسطين ومقاومتها الشعبية، العراق وغيرها...
اصبح الكلاشينكوف ماركة -أو تريند، حسب التسمية الحديثة- قويّة تُستخدم للترويج سواء لحزب أو جماعة أو حتى الفودكا!
الكتاب خفيف وجميل يجعلك تعيش الأحداث بتشويق وربطها مباشرة بالكلاشينكوف الذي تفوّق على جميع الأسحلة الهجومية ومنها M16 الأمريكية في عدة مواقع.

في ذروة الحرب العالمية الثانية واثناء اكتساح الجيش الألماني الجبهة الروسية , لاحظ ظابط الصف ميخائيل كلاشنكو تفوق السلاح الألماني قياساً بنظرية السوفيتي, وبعد إصابته ومكوثه في المستشفى لفترة طويلة عكف كلاشنكوف على تصميم سلاح شخصي هجومي يكون مزيح من الفاعلية والقوة وسهولة التركيب والعمل في كل ظروف القتال. واستطاع ان يصمم البندقية (AK-47) وفي عام 1949 أصبحت النبندقية الهجومية الأولي للجيش السوفيتي.
لكن شهرة البندقية ظهرت في حرب فيتنام عندما تم تسليح المقاومة الفيتنامية عن طريق الصين بالكلاشينكوف في مقابل بندقية الجيشالامريكي AM-16 ولظروف المناخ والأحراش في فيتنام اثبتت الكلاشينكوغ جدارتها وتميزها عن البندقية الأمريكية التي اشتكي منها افراد الجيش الأمريكي انها كثيرة الأعطال قياساً بالكلاشنكوف مما جعل افراد الجيش الأمريكي احياناً يلتقط الكلاشينكوف من مقاتل فيتنامي ميت ويستغني عن بندقيته الAM16 ومن ثم واصلت البندقية اثبات كفاءتها وتميزها عبر مسيرة طويلة من الحرب العراقية الأيرانية مثلاً ويضاً أصبحت السلاح الرئيسي لكل حركات المقاومة في العالم, سواء حركات المقاومة والتحرر أو الميليشات والإنقلابات العسكرية في افريقيا وامريكا اللاتينية..
اللافت أن صانع السلاح الأشهر في العالم ميخائيل كلاشينكوف كانت مشاعره الشخصية تتأرجح بين الفخر أنه صانع التحفة الخالدة للأسلحة الهجومية وبين المرارة من الأذي التي سببته تلك البندقية في العالم والصراعات التي كانت البندقية محورها.

Super interesting. I had never thought of the impact of this on our world and politics post-20th century. Following the history of the gun from Kalashnikov himself to a bunch of the major world conflicts since 1950 was a clever way of laying it out.

A "biography" of the AK-47 and its importance as a revolutionary tool and a symbol first of communism, then terrorism and then American machismo.
Each chapter in the book relates to a different chapter in the gun's "life." Hodges starts by visiting Mikhail Kalashnikov himself, the inventor of the gun. Next, it's an analysis of the gun's role in Vietnam, how the gun was uniquely suited to jungle fighting. Next, to a group of Palestinian insurgents fighting in Israel. The book also analysis child soldiers in Africa, Middle Eastern terrorists, and finally, the gun's adoption into American culture starting with the Rambo movies.
Hodges has journalistic roots and it shows. The book is laid out well, in clear language and relies heavily on interviews. My biggest problem with the book is that Hodges gives the AK more importance than it deserves. It does not cause terrorism or revolution or civil war; it's a tool. An emotionally-charged tool, to be sure, but without it the oppressed and the oppressors would have found other paths of violence.

This is a horrible book, and an astounding read. From the gun’s inventor, General Mikhail Kalashnikov, to Sudanese child soldiers, American rappers, and Islamic terrorists, Hodges recounts its shifting cultural significance in a narrative that is unrelentingly violent and grim.
In his quest to install the AK47 as a cultural symbol, Hodges tracks it through a remarkable series of incarnations. It is a Hollywood scene stealer; the “Coca-Cola of small arms”; a symbol of resistance, struggle, anti-US imperialism, rebellion, and independence, an image exploited most notoriously by Osama bin Laden; a signifier of manhood, respect, power, and celebration (most commonly, weddings); and an African cry of despair – “Kalash”. Though Putin gifted George W Bush a bottle shaped like an AK47, attempts to rebrand it as vodka have been largely unsuccessful.
The gun’s use, like that of any weapon, is testament to globally endemic violence, far more than to any symbolic significance – a point Hodges makes abundantly clear.

هو ده نوع الصحافة اللي بحبه، كتاب أهتم بتأريخ الكلاشنكوف من كونه سلاح حربي، إلى ثقافة شعبية، وخصوصيتها للثقافة الأمريكية اللي كانت ألد أعداءه في السابق.. طبعًا الكاتب نفسه وجهة نظره في تصنيف بعد الفصائل كإرهابيين عوار لا يمكن أني أسامحه عليه، زمان كنت بعذر الكاتب الغربي شوية تجاه رؤيته وتحيزاته اللي فرضتها عليه ثقافته وإعلامه اللي رضعه وشبعه من الصغر، وأكاديمياته اللي تدرج واتعلم فيها، ولكن بعد ما حوارت المخرج الأمريكي جيمس لونجلي عن وجهة نظره في أفغانستان وفلسطين والعراق وأفلامه عنهم، أيقنت أنه لا معذرة لإنسان أبيض فيما يخص عوار وجهة نظره، بل يُتهم عنها بكل أريحية بالنفاق والتدليس دون تردد، ومايكل هودجز صاحب وجهة نظر تتسم بالكثير من المنيكة

الكتاب جيد في العموم استعرض فيه الكاتب مجموعة من الصراعات التي استخدم فيها الكلاشنكوف يعتبر هذا الجزء الاهم بالنسبة لي حيث انها نظرة عن قرب حول تلك الصراعات في مختلف المناطق حول العالم.

Will not be satisfying or even particularly useful to NRA-type gun enthusiasts. For those of us interested in the cultural impact a single gun can have, this is fascinating.
Much more about how the AK-47 has gone from being the symbol of righteous guerrilla insurgency against imperialist Yankee dogs, to its current cache in the inner-city drug wars, this is much more a social history and memoir than the "story of a gun" the subtitle promises. But if you want a tech manual, those are available.

Varios testimonios siguen la vida del fusil AK-47 desde su concepción hasta la actualidad: desde cómo fue diseñado hasta su papel en las comunidades islamistas radicales de occidente, pasando por su papel en la conversión de agricultores vietnamitas en tropas de sabotaje en los 70 y los campos de entrenamiento de Al Qaeda en Pakistán. Lectura muy amena y recomendable.

An interesting idea for a book, somewhat squandered. Good detail in the chapters but they're dislocated, and at times he imbues the gun itself with a kind of anthropomorphised bloodlust. The book came out nearly 20 years ago and is obviously a bit dated in some respects, especially the final chapter on school shootings, gangsta rap, and video games.

well, i liked the first chapters, about the history of the AK, but then it became too much of a umm idk, a travelers nonguide to the spread of the AK, im sure many liked that, but i didnt. Much.

بيتبع فيه الكاتب رحلة الak من صناعتة ف روسيا ف الاربيعنات ف اواخر الحرب العالمية حتى صناعة زجاحة فودكا ع شكل اسم السلاح مرورا بكل بلد كان السلاح له دور فعال فيها
يقسم الكاتب الكتاب اجزاء من تاريخ السلاح
بداية تصنيعه والخلفية التاريخية ثم كل الحروب الى دخلها ف العالم من اول حروب التحرير الوطنى الى حروب العصابات والارهاب
ع طريقة الصحافة الاستقصائية كل مكان زاره السلاح بيزوره الكاتب يبحث عن اطراف القصة
روسيا وحربها العالمية وفلسطين وفيتنام وحروب التحرير وبكستان وافغانستان والصومال ولبنان. الخ الخ
ومعا الاختلاف او الاتفاق مع الكاتب ع تصنيف كل حرب دخلها السلاح كتحرير وطنى ولا ارهاب ولا عصابات الخ

بيتبع فيه الكاتب رحلة الak من صناعتة ف روسيا ف الاربيعنات ف اواخر الحرب العالمية حتى صناعة زجاحة فودكا ع شكل اسم السلاح مرورا بكل بلد كان السلاح له دور فعال فيها
يقسم الكاتب الكتاب اجزاء من تاريخ السلاح
بداية تصنيعه والخلفية التاريخية ثم كل الحروب الى دخلها ف العالم من اول حروب التحرير الوطنى الى حروب العصابات والارهاب
ع طريقة الصحافة الاستقصائية كل مكان زاره السلاح بيزوره الكاتب يبحث عن اطراف القصة
روسيا وحربها العالمية وفلسطين وفيتنام وحروب التحرير وبكستان وافغانستان والصومال ولبنان. الخ الخ
ومعا الاختلاف او الاتفاق مع الكاتب ع تصنيف كل حرب دخلها السلاح كتحرير وطنى ولا ارهاب ولا عصابات الخ

Finished reading Hodges AK-47 book over the weekend. Very interesting track of the AK's influence on multiple cultures over the past 4-5 decades. The subject got relentless toward the end of the read (good thing the book is only 210 pages). I'm imagining that Hodges probably had lots of fodder for this book and he did a good job keeping it fairly concise.
I found the writing style personable and engaging, but not a consistent page-turner (that's a hard to do with most non-fiction works). Overall, I'd rate it at 3.5 stars.
The book has further spurred my interest in modern middle eastern history and I'll be on the lookout for a good objective book there to add to my list... any suggestions?

A chronological history spanning from the AK47's beginnings as a "people's gun" for fighting fascism to its current symbolism as a "people's gun" for fighting imperialism (covers the time from WW2 until US occupation of Iraq and even gang wars on US streets). From a technology standpoint, it was one of the most groundbreaking designs ever put into action. As one who tends to abhor violence, I could understand why Mr. Kalashnikov wanted to build such a weapon, especially after he'd seen his fellow soldiers dying due to inferior technology against the Germans.

Sort of interesting, not very dense, a bit light on fact a lot more opinion and generalisation.
Strays off topic too often with the author's own reminiscences of his times as a war correspondent. The section on Iraq is almost completely about his time with some US Army types who seem to have been shot at by some AKs [and many other weapons] and is largely filler, as is quite a lot of the book.
Could have been much shorter and had more facts.

تحقيق جيد ..أعتقد انه الاول من نوعه...لم يسبق ان احدا تقصى اصل و مراحل الكلاشينكوف قبل الصحفي دة...مرورا بجميع الصراعات الرئيسية اللي كان فيها الكلاشينكوف أيقونة قبل أن يكون سلاح هجومي من الطراز الممتاز
ينقصه فصل عن حرب لبنان لتكتمل الصورة
دي بقى فايدة معرض الكتاب ....عمرك ما هتشوف اصدارات زي دي في دور النشر و المكتبات المصرية اللي نزلت لمستوى هابط من الفيل الازرق الي هيبتا مرورا بكل الكتب الاستهلاكية ....

Harrowing accounts of the use of what's probably one of the most famous firearms, the Kalashnikov AK47 (and variants) in a number of arenas.
The book is exceptionally well written in some parts, and lazy in some; despite the horrors involved, there's some slack generalising found within. Still, a pretty worthwhile read on an iconic weapon - and its human cost.

"AK47: The Story of a Gun" authored by Michael Hodges, is an incredible account of one of the world's best made automatic rifles.
Historically, the Germans had engineering as their trade craft, while the Russians had gunsmithing as their craft. The AK47 never jams. Its extended magazine clips only make the rifle that much more of a legacy too.

Coming at you at 650 rounds/minute... no, actually it reads quickly but wasn't too good, he struggles to keep a narative alive and some of his assertions are blatantly wrong, such as his suggestion that the assault weapons ban was based on the shooting in Langley in the early nineties.
