This was a great book with alot going on shifters, magic etc, this series has it all and if your like me and can be a little worried about starting a series with so many books, you won't be disappointed, all five books are all five star ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ reads and completely worth it.
Attention Audible🎵 users This series is now on the plus catalogue 7/2/23 🎈🎈🎈🎈🎈🎈🎈🎈🎈🎈
✅ New secondary characters ✅ Pace ✅ Shifters and other paranormal creatures ✅ Slight expansion of the world-building ✅🆗 Plot ✅🆗 Characters ✅🆗 Romance (kind of) ✅🆗 High school/Academy setting
After her promise to the mages, Mack now has to attend their magical academy to learn how to master her powers, so the mages will release Mrs. Alcoon. Honestly, the plot was weaker in this book. Sure, there is a subplot involving Alex and the vampires, but most of it revolved around Mack and her day-to-day life at the academy, and Mack trying to learn to control her temper. I like that she is feisty, but too much is not good either.
The setting was my biggest issue with this book. I am very picky when it comes to school/academia settings, and having Mack, a mid-twenties grownup, forced to make friends and play nice with silly teenagers focused on sneaking out so they could drink or catch the eye of their crush just didn’t do it for me. Also, the fact that Mack always had a “go fuck yourself” attitude, but then was suddenly forced to listen to everything the mages told her and be a nice model student just didn’t fit with what we saw in the previous books.
On the other hand, Mack is just being reckless. She is hell-bent on completing her training at the mage academy so they will free Mrs. Alcoon, and it must be some pretty good motivation for her to force herself to go through this joke of an academy, she knows she has 0 chance left, one tiny mistake and she is out, yet she sneaks out at night to go running, because it’s the full moon and she misses the freedom of it. She is risking Mrs. Alcoon’s future for a run under the moon. Even though it is kind of selfless of her to put herself through the academy training to save Mrs. Alcoon, it is also selfish to risk everything for a run under the moon because she doesn’t feel like staying inside at night, and I am not sure if Mack is selfless or selfish, probably a mix of both…
The fact that Mack is forming a friendly bond with Thomas makes little sense to me. I mean, why? Mack never appeared as a forgiving person, and Thomas was immature and mean to her, and somehow she forgave him after a few days and she even became his friend? It just doesn’t seem believable. Thomas is not a bad character per se, but I just didn’t find Mack’s fast friendship with him to be that believable. Sadly, because I didn’t buy her newfound friendship with Thomas, the big ending lost some of its “shock value” (I will not say more so I will not spoil anyone).
The romance is still dragging on. We got some flirting between Mack and Corrigan, but they are both just beating around the bush at that point. I understand Mack’s reluctance to get involved with him and to trust him with her every secret, but for us readers, it is becoming rather frustrating to see them walk around in circles and not go anywhere since book one.
On the positive side though, we finally got an answer as to what exactly Mack is, and there is no more secret between Corrigan and her, so hopefully their relationship will be able to progress in the next book.
Second re-read: 24.07.19 I don't like Mackenzie ‘Mack’ ‘Red’ ‘Kitten’ Smith (24?). At all. I can't stand her. Apparently I used to, enough to re-read it before and book #1 and #2 I clearly enjoyed a lot, but now.... no. I skimmed. A lot. I only cared for Corrigan (Lord Alpha of the Brethren), but not even he could make me enjoy this second re-read. Mack just ruined it all. Her temper is just too much, specially when she gets mad over the little things and it gets quickly tiring...
Quick basic facts: Genre: - (Adult) Urban Fantasy (M/F) Series: - Series, Book Three. Love triangle? - Cheating? - HEA? - Favorite character? - Corrigan. Would I read more by this author/or of series? - Unsure. Would I recommend this book/series? - Not anymore. Will I read this again in the future? - Not anymore. New Rating - 2 stars. Re-read: 14.03.15 I like it enough, but it's not great at all. Too long and though lots happened, it didn't feel like anything happened at all. At first, it's all shenanigans and stumbling about, as Mac trips her way through mage school, and all about London, and the meaning of her life. Soon, new problems ascend and descend, along with more hijinks, until a not-so-subtle plot twist lands me into an ending that made me cry and cheer.
I can't wait until we experience more Corrigan and more Mac, who cannot deny what she is now, no matter what. (And no, if I tell you that would be a spoiler even if you have figured it out).
Until then, on to the next book with the lovely narrator who makes me believe that I am sitting across from MacKenzie and listening to her tell me all.
Ok I enjoy the plot of the heroine who stumbles through things because of her ignorance. I like how she tries to help everyone but herself. However her doing things on her own and not being able to control herself gets old. I stopped at 56% because of the fact she is in denial and hasn't moved on . The story keeps going over the same problems with no solution because she is to weak and afraid. I feel like we are dealing with a child instead of an adult. I'm still wondering when we will get to the part where she gets over her denial to get to the point of what she is and learns something new. Quite frankly I'm done and I hope the future books were more knowledgeable and less ignorant.
I wasn't even going to read this one but I don't walk away from a series very often if I still have lingering questions.
This series left me with two questions at the end of book two:
1) What's going to happen with Mack & Corrigan? It's time for something to happen here!
2) Okay seriously, what the hell is Mack? Is she supposed to have all of these special powers just because she is a Dragon Wre?
So the first question...
Annnnd the second question... I mean... yes? Those are powers she should have, but we find out more about what she is capable of in this book.
I didn't think I would like this book because I didn't like the idea of the magic school, but this wasn't bad. The great mysteries in these books are never really that had to figure out but there is enough fun and action along the way that there are other aspects of the story to keep you interested.
In this installment, Mack agrees to train with the mages with the promise that the mages will lift their status spell from Mrs. Alcoon.
I was really disappointed in this one. It's slow and exceedingly nonsensical. Mack and Corrigan were on good terms when last we saw them in Bloodmagic. So when Corrigan surprises Mack at one of her anger management counseling sessions, and she snaps at him with more anger than usual, I was really confused. I just couldn't wrap my mind around why she's so mad at him. ALL. THE. TIME. It would have been different if I'd seen some sort of internal struggle with her feelings for him, but she really just acts as though he's the last male in the world she'd ever want to be with. She is sweet and kind to Alex, her new student friends, and even eventually Thomas, who tricked her into cutting all her hair off! But she doesn't have a single nice thing to say to Corrigan. Let's face it, she's a grade A bitch to him, and I don't know why he's still panting around after her. Why does every faction seem to know her secret except Corrigan; why is she still holding out?
The fight scenes are poorly written and hard to follow. I found myself rolling my eyes when she was training the teen mages to fight, which reminds me of another peeve with this installment. Mack constantly talks about the teens as though they're so young, and she's so old. I guess I hadn't realized how old Mack truly was until this book. Her hot and cold behavior was fine in the first two books, because I thought I was dealing with a teen. It turns out she's just a bitchy immature young woman in her mid-twenties.
I'm fond of the curse words usually, but when they start to lose their impact, you know they've been used too much. Changing "fuck" to "feck" for a different character doesn't make it a different word, the meaning is still the same, and they're still both overused.
Things picked up again towards the end, which was this book's only saving grace. Mack does learn to reign in her temper...a bit. And we do finally get a glimpse of what she really is, although I wasn't entirely clear on what causes her shift. Is it anger? Can't be, because we've seen her anger before...on multiple occasions. Is it the deaths of two mildly close friends? Well, see I'm just not buying that, because she only just meets them in this book and she doesn't spend a whole lot of page time with them. Why wouldn't avenging the death of her father figure back in Bloodfire cause this? That was a much closer bond, IMO.
As with the first two books, I downloaded the audio format. According to other reviewers, this series is chuck full of grammar issues, and I didn't want to be distracted by them. Plus, it's really easy to stain the kitchen cabinets and listen to these at the same time. :)
I've officially decided that this is one of those series that might never end. There will always be one more adventure for Mack. I'm a little peeved about that, starting to feel a little strung along. Be that as it may, I enjoyed the book. Perhaps not as much as the first two. Focusing as this one does on Mack's experience in the school it has a bit more of a Harry Potter feel to it and the series seems to have lost a little of it's earlier focus. Mack is still a smart mouthed, hot head. Corrigan is still a sexy shifter. Alex is still funny and Solus is...well, still Solus. Of all the new characters I like Thomas the best, though I don't think he grovels anywhere near enough for his initial misdeed and his personality takes about a 180 from his first meeting with Mack to his subsequent meetings. There's a fairly big reveal in this storyline, but it still ends completely open for the next book, Blood Politics (which is apparently due out later this year). I enjoy the experience of reading the Blood Destiny books, but with no conclusion in sight I don't know that I'll be running out for more.
Much of what makes me love a book are the relationships formed and the character growth within the story. At the end of book three, virtually nothing has changed from book one in the relationship dept. No growth, no forward movement. For three books everyone has just circled around. New characters are introduced, new characters are discarded. But nothing else changes much at all… well except we did finally see Mack transform. Guess there is that…
Okay…. I need some romance Helen… How long do we have to wait? There is so much tension build up between Mack and Corrigan. Let just get this own… LOL
Well we step back in to the world of Mack. As always there is never a dull moment. She is at the Ministry having her training as deal she mad with the Mages. She will do anything to keep Mrs. Al alive. But of course things go wrong on every level. She is trying to figure out all of this Magic stuff and go through these weekly trainings. Even though she is not a Mage, they are expecting her to complete these training. But the Dean is actually trying to get her out of there because he is not fond of her on any level.
We get to see the interaction with her and Solas. He really steps up to help her whenever he can. But there is always some type of cost or deal she has to make with him in order for him to help her. Not for sure if that’s a friend or someone that’s trying to look out for himself. I guess we will see more about that in the upcoming installments. Especially now that the Seelie Queen is involved. I also wonder what if anything will be come of the Vampires that has taken some of her blood. It’s just so many things that are not resolved.
I really enjoyed the new charters in the book that has become Mack’s friend. But I’m really upset how the ending left. You know never want to see anyone get killed especially if they are a good person. That just doesn’t sit right with me.
Then we get to see the chemistry between Mack and the Lord Alpha Corrigan. I don’t know about you guys, but this waiting period on what going to happen between them two is killing me. Whatever is going to happen needs to happen. OMG why is it taking so long for them to get together? This is the third installment, and nothing other than a kiss has happened. Sigh…. Please let’s get the romance on in the next installment Mrs. Helen.
I tried. I really did. But I just felt this series was getting worse and worse. This is me throwing in the towel. Sorry Mac, your wishy washy attitude, hot and cold temper and inconstant behavior totally turned me off. It annoyed me to the point that I don't care to find out what you are and what will happen next.
(3.5 Stars) Okay, officially I love the Blood Destiny series but way oh why is Ms. Hunter delaying the romance? Enough already, we are overdue for some serious kissy face!
"Bloodrage" begins with Mack reporting to the mages school. When she meets with the Dean he makes sure he lets her know he does not want her there and she will barely be tolerated. Upon walking to her room she notices the faculty and students don't want much to do with her either. One mage in particular, Thomas informs her as initiate she must shave her head. While he finds the joke funny, Mack does not and teaches he and his friends some manners and respect.
As Mack attempts to learn her way around and demonstrate competency in her classes, she slowly begins to make friends. Then after a disaster in one of her classes, Alex is brought on board to be one of her instructors. However, he also needs her assistance in switching an artifact that was co-mingled with a fake. This will place her in the direct path of Corrigan, the vampires as well as other nasties. If she is to help Alex, Mrs. Alcoon and continue to keep her heritage a secret, she will have to keep her wits about her.
Once again I love the humor, great characters and the constant action in this series; yet, the continual snarkiness between Corrigan and Mack is beginning to fray on my nerves. It is more than time for romance to either bloom between these two or burn out. At this point, I don't care which, I just want some type of romantic involvement for our heroine. Hopefully book 4 will provide some progress on this front.

57 points/100 (3 stars/5).
Mack made a promise - She'll attend mage school and complete it, and they'll release her friend from magical stasis. Even if she isn't a mage, and she sucks at magic.
Oof.
It is never a good thing when I can compare a character and a book to Harry Potter in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, but that was all I could think of during the entire duration of the book.
I knew it was going to be a rough book for me when in the very beginning, we find out she is going to have to follow the Mages at the academy to the letter and respect them and everything that entails. Mack is not good at following directions, or respect. Put that with the fact she feels caged in and people are purposely antagonizing her so she flies off the handle...and it was a very rough book.
I said last time that Mack's lack of self control and lack of thinking through things was most of the reason she is in the mess she is in. That is like, a hundredfold true in Bloodrage. Everything in the book was about her lack of self control, including even being forced to take anger management classes. The problem with it all is she blames everything but herself for this lack of control. She blames the people, she blames the situation, she even blames her very nature. These are just excuses, and excuses mean jack shit in the real world. I'm very annoyed with Mackenzie right now.
There really wasn't much in the way of plot this book, either. Most of the book was about her temper. Most of the rest of the space was taken up by her attending magic school, and being really, really bad at it. Which isn't a surprise, because she isn't a mage. I'm really angry for Mack (though that still doesn't excuse her behaviour). The second half of this book also deals with the second problem I have with Mack's character, her lack of thinking. A friend comes to her with a problem, she decides to help with the problem, they do the first thing that pops into her head and - surprise, surprise - it all ends up going pear shaped.
I was looking forward to more on the romance side of things this book, and I didn't really get it. We got a lot more flirting. A new potential love interest who won't be an actual love interest, but not because of anything Mack does. (Three books, three love interests! Score!) Everyone loves Mack, for some reason, even though she doesn't really actually know anyone. In fact, I don't know why anyone would even deal with her. All she does constantly is yell at them, fight with them, and use them. Every single one of them. Especially Corrigan, good lord why does he put up with her? All she does is yell and use him this book. Guys, she isn't worth it. Everything is just stalled out, still. Just disappointed here.
Hopefully, this is the low point in the series. I really do not like how much time is devoted to her trying to get away with having zero self control.
It's a while since I read the first two books - so I reread them both, thoroughly enjoying once more immersing myself in the problems stacking up for poor old Mack as she struggles to discover exactly who she is and what she does. I do enjoy how characters from previous books keep popping up, allowing us to get to know them better and the oh-so-slow burn romance that is gradually unfurling throughout the series is being very well handled.
Given just how short-fused and grumpy Mack is, I liked how her loyalty and bone-headed refusal to compromise her principles regarding those she takes responsibility for balances up against her less likeable attributes - it works well. My main niggle is that I personally would prefer less swearing - it's a book I'd like to recommend to younger members of the family, but can't. 9/10
She is way too unreasonably cranky to Corrigan to where she becomes annoying; seriously, she's so bitchy I wouldn't even like her character if she weren't selectively nice to at least some people. ---
The beginning was a bit frustrating with the school and everyone pissing me off, but it ends up well done later --- we get an intro of the vamps in the worldbuilding and they nasty. There are two incredibly depressing, sad losses and the ending of this one packs a huge whallop. My favorite ending of the series thus far.
I really enjoyed the last half of this book... immensely. Like. So much. But after reading how the series progresses and wraps up, this will be the last book for me. Definitely don't read this series for the romance... But I really like Mack.
You have to love a great magic academy book! Especially when the mages are elite, magic is the only good group pricks. And Mack is definitely not a mage! Of course the other groups can't let her just go to school. Nope everyone needs her to do things to help them. How will she ever learn anything??
This was one of the best books I ever read. And I bought the rest of the series and the next series as well. I couldn't resist. I sure hope there are more books coming.
