What's what in the story: Crimson Spell is a fantasy series set in an Europe-look-alike world, the main character is a prince who is possessed by a cursed sword, and the cursed prince is on a quest to break his curse. Along the way there comes a handsome but jaded mage who ends up helping the kind hearted prince. From this point onward romance, smuts, faes' magic and monster-fighting ensured! LOL

I really like this series and hope to read more in the future.

I came for the explicit sex scenes, but stayed for the story.

A powerful mage and a cursed prince

In a travel to find the cure to the prince curse everything can happen... funny, incredible explicit sex scenes... marvelous draw, to a already in my favorite shelf.

My applause,

and I CERTAINLY recommend it to all Yaoi readers... do it, and then tell me if it's not one of the best plot and draws you read.

This is a re-read. Still loving it. Yamane sensei's men are uber delicious to look at. The sex scenes are so well done that it kept me staring at the pages for long time and I love flipping back to it just to stare at it again and drool some more.

The pervent in me was a tad bit disappointed by the missing during Val's erotic encounter in the woods hence I sorta knock off a star for that. I demand a full-course when it comes to tentacles sex.

This is like someone took a less-epic D&D novel and inserted m/m porn (I can't even call it erotica, as it was completely basic ass-fucking with no foreplay and one character who was always unconscious during the sex). As a concept the aforesaid is actually rather amusing to me; the problem is that the dialog and plotting are on the level of the worst of D&D writing. We get lines like, "Talent such as yours is seen but once in a generation. You are correct to assume we feared it. After all, we were right to do so. It was your excessive, uncontrolled power that brought about the disaster a decade ago." Followed by a scene where a group of men chase one of the two companions out of the room with the intent of killing him, and the second man remains calmly finishing his non-urgent conversation before following to intervene.

For even odder contrast, there is also the obligatory cutesy magical animal, which I associate with manga aimed at kids:

The art is fairly good. Not fabulous, but definitely better than average.

2.5*

This is quite entertaining and sexy. Who wouldn't want a pliant (but dangerous) demon at their feet?

Uhm...

Sometimes there are changes of scenery (and storyline) that are quite confusing and make me scratch my head more often than not.

To be continued.

Maybe like a 2.5?

I honestly don't even really know what to think about this one. I was excited because it's BL fantasy (most of them are contemporary), but then the fantasy aspects were glossed over so much. I mean, we find out that Vald's (one of the MCs) kingdom is being invaded, and then he pulls out a sword, becomes possessed by a demon, and goes on a month's journey to find a sorcerer all in the span of a HANDFUL of pages.

And then there's the issue of consent, which seems to be rife in BL manga. In this one, Vald becomes possessed by a demon at night, and Havi has sex with him. But ... it's still Vald's body, and the demon cant speak so couldn't exactly give consent so in my mind this was rape, or at the very best non-con. I am just. So. Sick. Of the lack of consent in BL manga. It's not sexy. It's harmful.

I will read the other volumes because I bought the entire series because I thought it would be amazing :')

3.5

It's a solid fantasy story, with plenty of sexy scenes featuring the usual yaoi disregard for the concept of consent. Though both characters are beautiful and there were many lovely images, a lot of the art was oddly stiff and awkwardly proportioned, especially compared to her classic Finder, Volume 1: Target in the Finder. It's definitely not enough to turn me off the story--and I am greatly looking forward to Volume 2.

Definite must-read for lovers of yaoi.

Every manga by Ayane Yamano is a masterwork. And Crimson Spell is no exception. The drawings are beautiful, the characters lovable and the sex so hot that it burns the pages. Bald in his demon persona is the hottest thing on earth but then, I have a thing for intricate tattoos. And it's not all about fantasy stuff and wizards, fighting and demons, there is also humor there and the chibis are so funny looking that you just have to laugh.

I'm definitely looking forward to the next volume!

This was a really fascinating read!

A BL story with a heavy fantasy twist! Vald is a mild mannered, reserved man with a curse that turns him into a beast at night. He encounters Havi, a magic user who vows to find a way to break his curse. They travel the lands with a magical bunny/human familiar trying to gather the knowledge on how to break Vald's complex curse.

At night, Havi finds a different way to keep the beast calm. It's a little iffy on the consent there, though? Because while Vald is not all there - he's become the beast, this is all happening to his body so that was a bit odd.

The romance builds and by the end of this volume, I was definitely interested in seeing where the story goes!

Okay, so I'm a total pushover for sexy men with long hair, sword and sorcery fantasy, and demon sex! I admit it. I also admit that, although I actually own both English volumes of Ayano Yamane's yaoi fantasy series, I've also read all of the on line translations and I'm dying for the next installment! These books actually inspired me to begin work on a new M/M slash fantasy story, "Who Rules the King's Heart," still a WIP. That's how much I adore them. My favorite yaoi manga series ever, without a doubt!

VERY, VERY MILD SPOILERS FOLLOW:

I adore Ayano Yamane's art, and the story is so incredibly hot, it makes my palms sweat (even after the upteen-millionth time through). Volume I is relatively easy to come by. Good luck finding Volume II - I won't even admit to how much I paid for it! There are twenty or more some-odd chapters available on line in translation. Not sure why it takes so long to get them translated and in book form. Hands-down my favorite Japanese yaoi manga ever!

I was already a huge fan of Ayano Yamane's Finder series when I heard that this was getting an English release. I was a little skeptical that it wouldn't hold up to the quality of Finder. Thankfully, it was as good if not better! Yamane's art is exquisite, as always, but the storyline is even more developed than the first volume of Finder. Prince Vald has been cursed by his crimson sword to turn into a beast at night. He journey's to the magician Havi, renowned for breaking curses. Havi demands Bald accompany him on a journey to locate magical artifacts as payment for breaking the curse. But, Havi never counted on Bald's "beast" being so sexy and lusty! There is a lot of hot, explicit sex and the plot has a lot of action also. The rabbit "familiar" is a nice touch, and has the potential to add more humor in subsequent volumes.

I'm fortunate enough to have both volumes in Japanese (though I have to rely on scanlation), and still I can hardly wait for the next volume in English. A wonderful hard yaoi title; highy recommended!

what a fun fantasy read. this was my first yaoi manga and i really liked it. i liked Havi and Vald. Havi, who'll take advantage of any situation and naive Vlad.
Havi was definitely happy about the curse on Vald. it provided him with a virile, vicious demon he could satisfy himself with at night. plus during the day he had a companion in Vlad. they are on a journey to cure Vald and Havi will take every advantage he can. and to his surprise he's falling for Vald and his demon.
this was also a very smexy manga and i loved that as well. the drawing was great and the characters had just enough hotness. i'll definitely be continuing this series and more from this mangaka.

This was hilarious. It was like someone wrote a smutty fanfic of a generic dungeons and dragons type fantasy quest story.

War between two minimally described kingdoms... magic sword... curse... graphic semi-consensual anal sex... cute magic creature... mysterious antagonist... screaming orgasm... more magic...

Not For the Faint of Heart - Crimson Spell Vol 1 Review

Welcome to the Crimson Spell Not For the Faint of Heart Double Header (teehee)! That's right, today brings a new level of textual enjoyment as I read and review the (sadly) only two volumes of this manga available in the US, brought to you by Hinterland's Bourbon Barrel Doppelbock. Let the fun begin!

I will say to start that this is something of a rarity for Yaoi manga, this being a fantasy story. Most of the Yaoi things that I have read so far have been pretty consistently either a straight romance (or not, I guess...) or something like a thriller. There are quite few that revel in the high fantasy genre, and that being my favorite genre, I find that a damn shame. But here, at least, is a series that embraces fully a fantasy setting that is taken seriously and with magic and demons and dangers and all that. While some others, like Tale of the Waning Moon, do deal with fantasy tropes, that series plays for laughs while this one is not a play on those cliches.

To the story itself, though, which involves a young prince picking up a cursed sword to protect his kingdom and then having to set out to try and get the curse lifted, which brings him to a magic user who promises to help in exchange for the prince helping him obtain some magical items. The sexy catch in all of this is that the curse involves the prince being possessed with demonic energies, which the mage can..uh...siphon (if you know what I mean). And while this could feel rather problematic, as the prince never really consents to this sort of thing, it is done to help him and it is quite sexy so I can't hold it against the author too much. This is the same author and artist that brought us Finder, by the by, and I must say this series is leaps and bounds better, because the relationship between the main characters is just so much healthier and cuter.

The art, though, is still gorgeous, and the sex scenes are still done with the same care and detail that the artist is known for. That alone is well worth the price of admission, but the story also contains much more than typical Yaoi. It isn't just sex, and that means we are actually given a fantasy storyline with history and with side characters and it's just a very enjoyable experience all around. The art and sex scenes are appropriately arousing and very explicit, so no problem there, and the plot is rather interesting and involves magic and monsters and the like and there is a good bit of humor thrown in for good measure.

This is a great manga, then. It hits all the right notes and I am left with nothing but the highest praise. It is the beginning of these characters' relationship, and to the end they are really only friends with this sexual thing happening without the prince really being aware of it. He is having feelings toward the mage, though, and the mage, though something of a jerk and distant at times, is obviously falling for the noble and rather naive prince. It works. And with that in mind I give this manga a 9.5/10.

[Read more at my blog, Geeky Reading!]

A review copy was provided by the publisher, VIZ Media, and Erik Jansen from MediaLab PR. Thank you so, so much!

I was not sure what to expect with this book. It’s very pretty, and it looked good, but I didn’t even read the synopsis before reading it. I knew it was supernatural, and yaoi, and that was pretty much it.

Prince Vald gets cursed by a sword in order to save his castle/village/family. In an effort to get rid of the curse, he goes to a sorcerer, Havi, and strikes up a deal with him. This takes them on a journey to fight a dragon, ending up with an animal companion, and then to a village of sorcerers.

I rather liked the character progression for both characters, and really liked what I’ve got to see of them. Their relationship is also really nice and entertaining. I was not quite expecting the sex part, but there was quite a bit of it, rather detailed. It was nice and hot, though, I enjoyed it. I’m really interested to see what happens when Vald finds out, though… That’s sure to be fun.

The story progression was nice, nothing rushed or anything. All very interesting and exciting, fun. The humor was really well-done in this volume, a little straight-forward and straight-faced, which I liked.

The ending was nice, and opens to whatever happens in the next volumes. I’m looking forward to reading the next book, and hope to get my hands on it at some point in the near-ish future.

Prince Baldrigr Alsvieth journeys with the magician Halvir Hroptr to find a cure for the prince’s curse. The prince has fallen victim to a bewitched sword that turns its wielders into murderous demonic beasts. Only Halvir’s help will free the prince from his curse. But the magician has a price.

Ayano Yamane once again brings her talent for drawing hot men and non-consensual sex to paper. This time she delves into the sword-and-sorcery realm and she acquits herself very well. The male protagonists are both stunningly handsome, with the prince showing the slighter frame that is common to ukes in yaoi manga. But he’s got muscles, as befits a fighting royal, and that makes him formidable in bed, especially when he’s bringing his claws to bear. Yeoowcch…

There’s plenty of sorcery galore, with dragons, demons, a fey animal spirit and other magicians coming into the picture. The manga starts right off with a battle against demons and takes off running. Since this story deals with a journey, there’s going to be lots of action, adventure, humor, magical mischief and sexual tension along the way; Ms. Yamane does not disappoint, especially in the latter.

Yaoi romances hinge on chemistry between its sexual participants and you sense it immediately between Bald and Havi (as they call each other). If m/m romance with fiery, molten sex is your passion, I highly recommend this manga.
