Not exactly a read equivalent to a picture book (as it’s clearly written for a beginning reader), but it worked decently and my kids enjoyed learning about turtles and looking at the drawings. (I may or may not have skipped some of the repetitive dialogue in the book. *wink)
I won’t read this too often though; best to save it for when my kids are reading themselves. Don’t want them having it memorized before we get there. Ha, ha!
We recently spotted this baby turtle in a pond: watch my reel!

Let’s Get Turtles by Millicent E Selsam Illustrator Arnold Lobel- Children’s Illustrated Colour Picture Book- Two friends Jerry & Billy decide they want pets. They discuss nature of various pet dog, turtle, tortoise. Ultimately they decide to purchase one turtle each for each of them. Two children are inquisitive. They measure temperature of water in which the Turtles reside with the help of a thermometer. They also measure the temperature of their body. Jerrry’s mother telephones the Zoo authority in-charge Turtles and enquires about what food should they provide to turtles. On their instructions, they purchase turtle food, insects and feed them. Besides their studies, rearing turtles is an experiment for them. Message from this book is that children should experiment, take initiative, learn on their own and share their findings with friends.
Two friends decide they want pets and had a hard time agreeing on what to get. They eventually chose to each get a turtle. After problem solving and figuring how to care for their turtles, they do an experiment. I think for kids this is a great book. If any kid is interested in something, they can learn to take care of it and maybe even do an experiment and learn.
Another book that had Allyson's name in it that has been crossed out only this time not so mysteriously. In a very self-incriminatingly manner, I was so bold as to write my name and the date January 15, 1974 on the opposite page!
It's disturbing that the pet-store man who just sold the kids turtles says, "I don't know much about turtles." Of course, after that he's happy to sell them a book about turtles. Hmmm.
