An erudite introduction to one of the major Indian religions. While I found it very educative, I also found myself disheartened at the thought that I am having to learn about prapatti or vishishtadvaita from a book rather than from my teachers or family elders.
Highly scholarly, yet lucid work on Visishtadvaita philosophy
I was desperately trying to get a copy of this book for quite sometime and was extremely elated to see it available on Amazon.in recently.
The book commences with an account of the history of the development of Vaisnavism in India. Following this, it delves into the Philosophy of Vaisnavism, where it elaborates upon various doctrines of Visishtadvaita Vedanta, ranging from the Ultimate Reality to the concept of Moksha. Under the Theology portion, the book elaborates on a wide range of concepts, culminating in Prapatti or complete self-surrender as a means of attaining eternal liberation from the mundane cycle of birth-death-rebirth cycle. The description of the 9-stage spiritual ascent of the soul from obtaining philosophic knowledge to ultimately returning to the Divine Abode and getting united with the Paramatma is extremely beautiful. The final part on the Religious Discipline touches upon the role of an Acharya and the daily religious duties of Vaisnavas, along with a mention on Kainkarya to Bhagavan and Bhagavatas. The author effortlessly presents abstruse philosophical concepts in an easily-digestible form for readers and the flow of the book is smooth, with key concepts being reiterated in later chapters to ensure readers do not lose track of them.
