Rate this book
The events in the story are true and are based on soldiers' diaries, journals, correspondence and other historical records. Twelve-year-old Cassie, a mixed-race child and a slave, is caught between the color lines in eighteenth-century Revolutionary War Virginia. She escapes slavery finding refuge with the British army only to be cast out of Yorktown between the battle lines during the last great battle for American Independence. With her future in the balance, she must decide weather or not to reveal her true identity.

Fast-paced read, packed with well-researched history about Williamsburg and Yorktown during the Revolutionary War. The story is told through the eyes of a mixed-race slave girl aged 12. Exciting, historical read.
