A cruel murder, a missing person case, and a string of heists puzzle police
On a misty morning, a jogger spots a burning vehicle in the middle of a Yorkshire field. When they arrive, the fire brigade realise it contains a dead body.
Whoever torched the van did so to leave no trace at the scene, and DI Stewart Gardener struggles to identify the remains. Let alone establish the cause of death.
Could the victim be connected to a string of post-office robberies troubling the area, or are they related to a missing person case that’s quickly going cold?
The incident room heats up with theories but the more various suspects are identified, the harder it becomes to work out who’s implicated in which crime.
The British Fantasy Society published Ray Clark's first work in 1995 - Manitou Man: The World of Graham Masterton, was nominated for both the World and British Fantasy Awards. In 2009, Ray's short story, Promises To Keep, made the final shortlist for the best short story award from The Tom Howard Foundation. Ray is based in Goole, and has set his Gardener and Reilly crime series in nearby Leeds.
I call ‘BS’. This author knows not of what he speaks. He writes about a 20 gauge shotgun and digging the bullet out of the wall and being able to match it to the gun it was fired from. How pray tell would he do that? It’s a shotgun not a rifle. He also writes about being able to match the fuel used to start a fire to the exact gas station where it was purchased. Really? I admit that know virtually nothing about this topic but I find this extremely hard to believe. In any case, I’m done with this book at the 36% mark.
One morning a runner spots a van on fire. When the police investigate they find a dead man inside. Could he be connected to a series of post office robberies? And is Frankie, who appears to be stupid, really be a criminal mastermind? The team is also suspicious of two woman in the deceased man's life--his wife and his mistress.
Another great story in the I series by Ray Clark. Great characters and a good story line with plenty of twists and turns. Also some humour and a bit of violence. I aLso enjoyed the way the story reached its conclusion. I hope there are more to come in the series.
Ray Clark does it again in this, the ninth book in his Northern Crime series. Great characters and a solid plot make reading this a couple of well spent nights in.
A body found in a burnt out van, a postman reported missing by two females, and a series of robberies. DI Gardener and his team investigate. An enjoyable modern mystery
