James Robert "Jim" Davis is an American cartoonist who created the popular comic strip Garfield. Other comics that he has worked on are Tumbleweeds, Gnorm Gnat, Slapstick, and a strip about Mr. Potato Head.

Jim Davis was born in Fairmount, Indiana, near Marion, where he grew up on a small farm with his father James William Davis, mother Anna Catherine (Carter) Davis, brother Dave, and 25 cats. Davis' childhood on a farm parallels the life of his cartoon character Garfield's owner, Jon Arbuckle, who was also raised on a farm with his parents and a brother, Doc Boy. Jon, too, is a cartoonist, and also celebrates his birthday on July 28. Davis attended Ball State University. While attending Ball State, he became a member of the Theta Xi fraternity. He earned the dubious honor of earning one of the lowest cumulative grade point averages in the history of the university, an honor incidentally shared with Late Show host David Letterman.

Davis as of 2007 resides in Muncie, Indiana, where he and his staff produce Garfield under his company, Paws, Inc., begun in 1981. He was married to Carolyn, a singer and elementary teacher whom he met while both were attending college, and has a son named James with her. However, the couple divorced, and Davis since 2000 has been married to Jill, Paws' senior vice president of licensing, who has worked there approximately 25 years.

Ironically, Davis did not own cats when he started Garfield because of Carolyn's allergies, but they owned a Labrador retriever named Molly. With Jill, the family has expanded to include children Ashley and Chris; three grandchildren, Chloe, Carly and Cody; cats, Spunky and Nermal; and a dog, Pooky.

Honestly, Jim Davis (the author) did an extraordinarily good job on his series of Garfield. With the first comic being on June 19, 1978, he has made the series more fun and funny for the reader. He shows his dedication to the series with all 54 books of Garfield. (:D)

Tenth Garfield Treasury

Review by Edward A

Title Author: Jim Davis

Who ever had or even KNOW a cat that weighs more than 200 pounds? Who has a cat that acts like a human? Who has cat that acts like a human? Who has a cat that could walk or think like a human? Did you ever saw a cat beating a dog with its feet? Did you ever saw a bottle stuck in a man’s head? Or have you ever saw a cat playing “Tag” with a bunch of mouse? According to Jon, Garfield, and Odie, all of these things could happen every single day—-or night…

This book is about an owner named Jon Arbuckle who own a cat named Garfield and a dog named Odie and with their friends Germal and more. And so Garfield and his friends would make crazy stuff happen like Garfield playing “Tag” with mice, or making a small door at the bottom of the fridge or even punting a dog with its cat foot. Maybe even seeing a small ambulance doing “CPR” on a spider or even an ant…

My favorite part is when Garfield “Worked so hard to be lazy” because he took a bunch of tools and the television, so he made the television on the ceiling and so he could lay o his bed and watch the television upside-down… And another favorite part is when Jon saw Garfield chasing the mouse and suddenly Garfield said “Tag! You are it!” Then Jon was looking irritated.

The main idea of this book is how funny things could be when you look around your house, school, or even in a swimming pool! And also some about friendship or some is just very funny maybe it is trying to make you laugh and laugh. And I also think Jim Davis wanted to tell us that a pet cat or dog could be a very close friend or even be best friends!

I love this book because I think it is very funny and some do really have important message and because I think this is the only book that cat could talk or even think and walk or punt like a human being! For example, when Jon just brought Odie home Garfield was thinking how he could survive, but suddenly when Odie came to Garfield, Garfield started to hit Odie and punt him all over!

I recommended this book to anyone who loves crazy stuff like a cat smashing a spider, and the spider never dies! Especially from 5~12 years old, because I think when you get older you will be ore mature and then so you will think Garfield is bored to you
