What can I say? This is the one. The first and main cookbook I go to. As should every good, Canadian woman. It is also the dirtiest cookbook I own, has the most margin notes and not one recipe that didn't turn out better than I expected or that my talents allowed. NOT full of lots of extra homemaking advice, (but more than I will ever need), this is just one great recipe after another. But not so strict that there isn't room for me to Laura-Lee-ize them. (to customize and enhance them in my own unique way).
I do find the recipes yield slightly less than they state. For example, if Five Roses says it yields 18 muffins, I might only get 14. Or if it states that it feeds 6, it might only feed 4. Of course, it might just be that me and my friends and family might perceive our "helpings" bigger than the skinnier "less gluttonied" people in the Five Roses test kitchens. 🤷♀️🐥
Many a compliment and tradition lay between its covers. So it's about time I stop being selfish and share my secret for being a good cook and baker with the rest of you.
My recommendations for best recipes? The Sugar Cookies (which I make each Christmas) and the Chocolate Cake. And if you need a Taster, I volunteer my services. 🙋♀️
Now stop wasting your time reading another one of my reviews and go have some fun in your kitchen.
The best book on baking ever made, IMO. My mom had a copy that literally disintegrated it was used so often. I thought it was lost forever until I found a copy at my local Value Village.
According to an Amazon review, the new version of this book doesn't have the spiral spine, which is a real problem because it's important to be able to lay the book flat so you can read the recipe with ease.
I'm making peanut butter cookies in between typing here. Woah, nostalgia!
I grow up using this book to bake. It is an amazing cook book. Unlike most cookbooks the index it organize wonderfully. The recipes are easy to follow. A lot of cookbooks now a days they tell you to open a box of cake mix to make cake?! This book tells you how to make a cake the real way. I love this book and I highly recommend it. :)
A wonderful reprint of the 1967 edition of this classic Canadian cookbook, first published in 1913 by the Lake of the Woods Milling Company. Easy, tasty recipes for all sorts of meals using ingredients Canadians can obtain, unlike so many cookbooks published in other countries and sold here. I recommend especially the banana bread and that Canadian staple, butter tarts.
The go-to cookbook in my kitchen. All recipes are good and consistent - my favorite recipe in here is the pineapple upside down cake. Want to know how to make anything...it's in here. Should be a standard reference for all kitchens!
I have my mother's old copy of this book, pages yellowed and stained with ingredients for recipes. We made so many of these recipes -- the baked goods are wonderful to make!
If you only buy one cookbook in your life, this one is it! I have been using this cookbook since my mom's copy dating back in the 70's. Time tested and true!
