Cole and his crew are lost in space and stranded with no way home.
After escaping from the colony ship in a faraway system Cole has uncovered sinister evidence of August Walton's A castoff civilization living in the past and forced to comply with the Eternal leader's unjust edicts.
It doesn't take long for Cole to realize that the planet has its own secrets. Navigating lies and half-truths leads to a brewing rebellion led by the one person who might hold all the answers he seeks. But, as any good Renegade knows, nothing's ever easy.
Time is running short.
The enemy is always one step ahead, no one is who they appear to be, and Cole doesn't have the firepower or personnel to go up against the might of a seed ship. That isn't going to stop him from doing what he always does.
Survive and overcome.
Failure isn't an option. The stakes are higher than ever and freedom comes at a heavy cost. To get his crew back home before they're all too old to care, Cole must push himself to the limit and decide how much he's willing to sacrifice.
This book contains action, cussing, and general badassery. Read at your own risk.
The last time we left Captain Cole Riker, he and his crew had barely managed to escape from a not so friendly seed ship. That seed ship, the *Nereus*, was governed and controlled by a megalomanic, August Walton and a deranged AI named Doris. Riker had attempted to get Walton to provide his ship and crew with a slip tunnel back to known space, but Walton had other plans. So, Riker and his crew had to fight their way off the *Nereus* and now have landed on Empyria.
They knew that some of the former residence of the seed ship had been banished to this planet for whatever reason(s) Walton deemed useful. They had set up their own living conditions and now were segregated in two different camps. One camp had a fairly large city that seemed well organized and had setup a farming community that grew crops for not only those on the planet, but the annual harvest requirements laid on them by Walton. Not meeting the harvest quota resulted in attacks by the seed ship upon the community and that was something no one wanted.
So, Riker and his group needed to contact one or the other of these groups. Riker was determined to go back aboard the *Nereus* and end Walton’s tyrannical rule. But, he need more people than just his crew. While he had a very capable crew, they were just not enough to capture and defeat a seed ship the size of a small planet. Still, they did know that the *Nereus* was not as populated as thought. A lot of people that Walton didn’t like were put in permanent sleep stasis while the majority of the population remained in stasis until Walton felt a need for addition people. He only kept those people around him who almost worshipped him as a god. That Riker wasn’t going to tolerate if at all possible.
Upon landing in the *Roswell*, Gray’s ship, they were met by a contingent from the large city. One of the individuals invited them in to meet with the governing council while the other individual was obviously in-charge of security and didn’t seem all to happy to have Riker and his crew anywhere around the city. Still, they met with the ruling council. The meeting wasn’t as productive as Riker had hoped. He did find out that there other camps that resided in the mountains were considered outlaws and had rejected the Councils governance. Eventually, Riker got tired of the Council delaying any commitment to help in his going back to the *Nereus* so he made an attempt to contact the mountain camp.
Here he found the twin sister of one of the people that had helped them escape the *Nereus*. Her name was Kame and she was the sister of Nadia. While she didn’t have a lot of people, they all were dead-set against the status quo that had settled on the planet against the *Nereus* and Walton. So, after awhile, Riker and his now larger group came up with a plan. Not a very good plan, but at least they had something and if it worked, it would put an end to Walton and his deranged AI. Now to implement the plan, the hard part!
The story was very interesting and exciting all the way through. There is just enough humor throughout the book that doesn’t go overboard or doesn’t seem out of place. Riker can be a thoughtless Captain at times, but he has plenty of people around him to put in back in his place which is good.
I’m looking forward to reading more stories in this series. The next book (4), “[Bad Omens](https://amzn.to/47gmzaE)”, is available on Amazon now.
Book 3 keeps the excitement and suspense turned up! Makes me think of Ethan Hunt from the MI series, having to pull together a mixed crew he does know on an old military surplus spaceship and thru no fault of his making gets LOST in SPACE. Now he is trying to deals with crazy humans and corrupt AI’s that put themselves over the lives of others. Ya! That about sums it up! Can’t wait for book 4!
Another well crafted storyline in this series. Good character development continues, providing some depth for even secondary characters. It’s a good storyline, with a series of conflicts and resolutions, and while some do die, the losses are treated mostly out of scene. This book ends with its primary story threads resolved, the overall story arc continuing and the reader satisfied with the progress so far.
Book 2 was not up the author's usual standard, thankfully book 3 is Better written, story flows well, a few twists and turns and the odd minor surprise. No one ever expects this sort of story to go along with no unexpected situations, but Cole and the crew really do seem to get every piece of bad luck out there. Nothing ever goes to plan. In fact the whole series is based on the fact, that a journey to find Grey's home planet, is anything but simple
But I do have a problem in that the authors seem to have no idea what a meter is. For those unaware, it is about 3 feet 3 inches. So when they stop to wait for a group 10 meters away that is only about 32 or so feet. And if a monster is out of sight a few meters away it is only 10 feet. Someone needs to proofread the book
This is such a great series that doesn't lose its mojo! The crew are gelling together better with each mission they undertake. In this one, they have to help people escape from the cluthes of a mad man & his equally mad AI. Hold on to your hats as they jump from one crisis to another, surviving by the seats of their pants
I'm going to start calling each book an episode, and the whole series like a season of a show. Each book picks up where the last ended and goes through a very specific set of events before the cast moves on to the next adventure in the show.
Ok now that that's out the way, I really enjoy this series. While parts are predictable, I definitely recommend it.
On par with the second book and brought the story arc to conclusion. I still think this story can get better and it has a solid framework to do so as we move farther into finding the home of Gray. Again I look forward to the next book in this series.
The action occasionally but it is quickly off and running! The story has a lot of exciting moments and plenty of twists and turns. Only thing left to do is wait for the sequel.
Again I am so involved in this series and I am looking forward to the next installment. Have no idea what is coming next so am looking forward to the next book.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book! It was a little slower than previous books in my opinion, but it flowed very nicely and told a great story. I'm definitely looking forward to the next book!
Better than the first 2. Even knowing the end didn’t detract from the journey. Like a trip isn’t just the destination but the excitement of going. Cole is still pretty much the same as is his misfit crew.
A journey home for an alien shipmate leads the team to a closed society led by a powerful narcissist and his warped AI. INTRIGUE, BETRAYAL AND MORAL CONUNDRUMS A PLENTY!
Mildly confusing at first, but it gets better. I especially like how it turns out, but then I usually do when the bad guys get what's coming to them. Good to see the character development in this one. Looking forward to more.
Poe is getting some real growth in this book. I enjoyed his character. In my head I called him junior... Great reading thus far in this series. Looking forward to the next book!
A better book than the last with less sideline waffle. The story has progressed along with the characters so it will be interesting to see how that carries into the next book.
Lots of fun to read, overall series is enticing and not to be put down! Absolutely enjoyable. Sometimes it does get a bit rambly but definitely still good.
