Total rugby is the antithesis of play-safe rugby - an open, ebullient game in which every player is encouraged to show what he can do as an attacker, defender and supporting player. Total Rugby" has become one of the game's most seminal coaching manuals - it highlights Jim Greenwood's radical examination of every facet of the game and his ability to clearly convey the wealth of knowledge he has accumulated over many years. This fifth edition has been thoroughly updated and expanded."
Coaches might pick up this looking for a how-to guide for sessions. That’s not really what you’re going to get from this. The power of this book comes from helping a coach to develop an ethos around coaching, helping you decide what kind of coach you want to be. I read this and identified things that I definitely wanted to do, already do, and do not think will work for me. But every section helped reflect on the role of coach. Must read for coaches who are looking to develop their knowledge and skills.
Lots of very helpful concepts in here. Reads more like a textbook, so if you are serious and technical about your approach to coaching rugby, then this is a must-have. This is more of a coaching concepts book rather than specific on-field strategies, which is apparently covered in his other book Thinking Rugby (on my list to read).
I would have liked to have seen more illustrations and diagrams.
