Although I'm not proud of it, the NLS catalog annotation will make it clear to anyone who has even a passing acquaintance with me why I chose to read this book. The annotation says:

"Anecdotes by or about the mothers of George Hamilton, Bill Cosby, the Gabor sisters, Mick Jagger, Elizabeth Taylor, Barbra Streisand, and Robin Williams, among others. Sometimes the stars themselves add their own thoughts to the musings of their mothers."

This is not the sort of thing which would ordinarily attract me, but the mention of Streisand caused me to give it a try.

The catalog description is 100 per cent accurate. The jacket information, on the other hand, makes it sound like the book will have more depth than it actually does.

The book is broken down into sections which deal with different aspects of the mother/child relationship. For example, one chapter deals with stage mothers, another deals with happy families, another with privacy issues when your child is a star, etc. There is some interesting commentary on the themes, but most of what you'll get is anecdotes about the stars which are related to the chapter topics.

There were times when I enjoyed this book quite a bit and other times when I wished it were over. For me, it would have worked better as a short article than it does as a book. But I'm sure there are many fans who would enjoy it more than I did. It was a moderately interesting way to pass the time and, while I certainly won't put it near the top of my "best books" list, I don't regret reading it.
