If your young reader has enjoyed the rest of the series, I see no reason why they wouldn't enjoy this latest installment. I had a few quibbles as an adult reader. First, while I enjoyed the written description of the caves, I found the illustrations quite lackluster in this particular book as they are mostly just of the kids with a dark background (the cave) and don't even show off the interesting formations in the cave very well. Also, I really wish that they hadn't included an illustration of the little girl holding bat guano. I've always understood that bat guano should never be handled, and I distinctly remember a Reading Rainbow episode when I was a child where the scientist went into the cave to study bats wearing practically a hazmat suit with breathing apparatus and gloves. I don't think books like this should encourage children to touch these things, especially without an adult expert's approval. Anyway, that aside the action and exploration of the caves is decent. Beyond that, we don't really get much insight at all into the country they are visiting (India), it just takes place in the cave and feels it could have happened anywhere. I do appreciate that there was some sensitivity with regard to the issue of illegal mining and that all illegal miners are not villains but fellow human beings driven to crime due to desperate circumstances. Granted, it's all handled in a very superficial way, and there is a remarkably tidy happy ending, but I feel it's suitable for the target audience. Back matter is interesting with some further information about the horseshoe bat;Exploring Caves (including equipment and safety measures) and mention of three really cool real-world caves; and The Cave Food Pyramid. Also includes a quiz and glossary but, alas, no Bibliography.

These are a great series of books; our 8 year old loves all of them (and has encouraged me to read them as well); they are a nice enjoyable read; with some interesting facts (I've learned something new each one that I've read); great series

Illustrations were all underground and they didn't meet as many interesting locals.
