Author Kathryn Watterson takes readers inside the Smiths' adventure of working and building with Frank Lloyd Wright to create their home in Bloomfield Hills, MI (1946). Their story "is a fairy tale with blueprints, a unique blend of architecture and affection, of serendipity and staying the course." Publisher: Smith Publishing Group. Length: 250 pages. Beautifully illustrated with both black and white and color photographs.
This book was sitting on a piano in the house that Sara Smith and her husband devoted much of their adult lives to building. It took some digging to find a copy I could borrow, but I enjoyed getting to know more about Smith. When visiting their home, which is now part of the Cranbrook Center for Collections and Research in Bloomfield Hills, MI, the focus of the tour is primarily placed upon Smith's husband Melvyn and his passion for Frank Lloyd Wright's architecture, so this was a welcome exploration into his other half. I've included a link to the house below. My only regret is that I would have read this book before visiting, so that I would have appreciated my time there even more.
