If you're looking for something to hand off to your young reader, give this series a try!
The Littles are "humans" ... they just have a tail and are six inches tall. That's all. Oh, and they live in the Biggs house; not that the Biggs know it, because the Littles reside in the tiny spaces and nooks of the home. The Littles take food scraps and things they find in the garbage and in return for "mooching" off of the Biggs, they repair the leaks in the pipes and the electrical issues in the house. And when they're not doing that, they have all kinds of wonderful adventures; which is actually incredibly often.
A fun series, with lots happening, a silly uncle, and a family that love each other!

Very cute and charming beginning chapter book. One definitely does have to suspend disbelief but one does so willingly when the story is well-written for the most part. Plus such whimsy, unbelievable as it is, is part and parcel for this genre of realistic fantasy. A family of little people co-exist with the big people completely unbeknownst to them. The adventures begin when a get-together of all the house tinies in the neighborhood is planned. It is no small feat to move tiny people across the neighborhood!
This book is about how sad it is to live in your house with only your family and have no friends, and how dangerous it is to venture outside, yet how necessary friendship is to children's development. 😭
Children will love this second book in the Littles series.
When the family gets restless, they realize they need to spend time with other Littles. So they plan a trip to another Little family living in another house nearby. But this means they need to travel across the dangerous yard.
This fun books will delight young readers who are new to chapter books.
Of the first 3 Littles books I read, this was the best of the three, though I'm done with revisiting this childhood series. I liked the introduction of an actual conflict (Littles children wanting to meet other tiny people) and an attempt at a solution (traveling for the first meeting). Its also well told mostly and simple and good for a kids' book up to the end. I enjoyed them meeting the wood Specks in their tree, a bit of the history of the tinies, and the various families and characters like the pilot Cousin Dinky. That said, I think the plan was stupid.
Why do a single overnight trip without Dinky to guide them? Whats the rush? They could be guided by Dinky and have the families move over a series of nights instead of a single night. Even more stupid, why not go during school days/hours? That way, the parents are mostly working and the kids are at school, so its easier to travel outside. Also, as usual, the biggest issue is this series stopping so abruptly. Right when I might meet the other families and see their interactions, it ends.
But its a childrens' book so I know not to expect too much. It is decent for a kids' book I suppose. Overall, books like The Littles remind me of Ms. Frisby and the Rats of Nimh/The Witches a bit and are naturally good underdog stories usually, though other mice stories are better than the little peoples. Maybe borrowers would be better? I'm not sure.
The Littles set out on a dangerous overland trip to meet some of the other tiny families.
Lucy saves the day - her method of taking care of the attacking weasel was inventive!
This book seemed to end too quickly - another five pages or so would have been good.
This second book in the Littles series was as good as the first. I loved Grandma Little's hand-knitted pouches that enabled her and Mrs. Little to ride cat-back.
I think the author picked great characters because children that read the book will be interested in the mice resembling characters. This book involving the little was a great representation of kids in general. The Little's get bored without friends to play with, which can be the same case for kids in a classroom or even on the playground. I picked this book because it seemed adventurous.
Another slam dunk! The Littles are feeling alone, and decide there should be a meeting of all the tiny people in their region. What should be a quick jaunt through the yard turns into an adventure of a lifetime, and we are shown how everyday things for us can be huge obstacles for the Littles! My daughters both loved it.
A fun follow-up to the first book, as it expands the world and acquaintances of the Little Family. I only feel like the book ended to abruptly, and so the thing you were waiting for the whole book, was built up to, but then not really explored, so I’m hoping the next book picks up there and fills in more details. My 4.5 year old has been enjoying the read-alouds.
As a child, I read every one of these books in the series I could get my hands on. They have inspired my imagination for decades. Because of them, I branched out to find any books on 'little people' I could find. This series is well-written, and engaging with amazing illustrations. I highly recommend any of The Littles series to children of all ages.
The time in which these books were written is pretty clear considering how sexist they are, but they're still fun adventure stories. Sadly I don't think kids would like them as much nowadays compared to the other great chapter books out there.
Leeland read aloud to me. Perfect reading level for him. He loved the story of a family of little people living in a big world. I have never read this book or series before. A great easy to read chapter book. And if your kid likes them there are a ton in the series.
Cute story about a bunch of minuscule people called Tinies and the adventures they go on to attempt a Tiny reunion. Dashiell and I enjoyed reading this together.
This was another cute story in an enjoyable series. Again, the character development and suspense were appropriate for the intended audience. I highly enjoyed and recommend this title.
The copy I have has a different cover, but it turns out it was the same book. Very good story. Even kept me on the edge of my seat for a few chapters. Great for ages 7-10.
This book is about a little family of people who live within the walls of the Biggs house. The Biggs are a regular-sized family. They eat what the Bigg family eats, and they spend a lot of time watching what the Bigg family does. In this book, the Littles are ready to meet some people their own size so they decide to take a trip! Days says, "I like when they took a trip. My favorite part of their trip was when they met the other little families." DS says that he didn't like the tails the little people have but DD says, "I liked the tails!" We enjoyed this book just a little bit, and it wasn't nearly as good as Charlotte's Web.
